A metal shutter covers the read/write aperture. It is held closed by a small spring within the diskette shell. When the diskette is inserted in a |floppy drive|, the shutter slides back off of the aperture. This exposes the recording media within to the |read/write head|. When the diskette is removed, the spring slides the shutter back over the aperture, closing it.
