The bar code scanner houses a sensor in the tip of a |stylus|-like wand. As the wand is passed over a series of lines, the sensor detects their thicknesses and transmits this data to the scanner's main unit and then on to the computer. The scanner translates the different electrical signals (determined by the thickness of the scanned lines) into binary code.
The bar code scanner is especially helpful in inventory control, as most products now display a ~Universal Product Code~. This code is unique for each type of product, making it easier to track inventory and sales. Grocery stores use a variation of these devices in their checkout lines to speed up sales. A product passes over the scanning bed with the UPC code in view and the laser "reads" the code and automatically registers the stock number and price of the product. Use of such machines can greatly reduce the time the consumer spends in checkout lines and gives the stores a more accurate accounting of their stock.
