The telephone is an electrical device which is used to transmit sound over long distances. A microphone transforms sound to electronic impulses, which are transmitted over copper or fiber-optic lines. A speaker on the other end transforms incoming impulses back into sound. The device plugs into a wall outlet, usually with an |RJ-11 connector|, and often is used in computer systems in conjunction with a |modem|.
