The term "parallel" is used in computing to describe the mode in which data is transmitted. Parallel transmission means that all 8 bits in an 8-bit byte are transmitted simultaneously (the bits are transmitted parallel to each other). Because of the simultaneous transmission of bits, the parallel mode is generally much faster than serial transmission. Printers generally use parallel connections.
