In the CRT display, electron guns fire streams of electrons through the vacuum of the tube to "excite" the phosphor on the display screen. This produces light. This stream is focused and deflected across the screen by electrodes and electromagnets in the yoke. Finally, the shadow mask filters any stray electrons at the screen, keeping the image sharp.
