- ~0EINTRODUCTION
- ============~07
- Welcome to Dot-Mania! We wrote this program for Blair (a six year old who
- loves doing join-the-dots pictures) after we couldn't find any other
- join-the-dots programs. About half way through the project we found a couple
- of other similiar programs, but since ours looked much better than the
- competition we carried on and finished our version. Blair and all his
- friends loved Dot-Mania so much that we thought that other people would find
- it useful, so we decided to release it as shareware.
-
- Dot-Mania is a fun game of join-the-dots for kids of all ages. You use the
- mouse to join the dots in either 1-2-3 or A-B-C fashion, then you can colour
- the picture in! It has an attractive, user-friendly GUI. Also included is a
- help facility for when you can't find the next dot, and the ability to print
- out the picture (either the dot version or the finished version). Sound
- Blaster support gives you several songs that play in the background, and lots
- of real neat sound-effects and voices.
-
-
-
- ~0EINSTALLATION
- ============~07
- Dot-Mania requires an IBM PC or 100% clone, a VGA screen, a printer (if you
- want to print pictures), 640K of RAM, and a mouse.
-
- A sound card is optional for sound-effects, voice and music. Note that
- your card must be a Sound Blaster or 100% compatible (some sound cards aren't
- 100% compatible and may play the sound effects faster or slower than they are
- ment to be played).
-
- Ensure that the following files are present: INSTALL.BAT and DOTMANIA.EXE.
- Simply type INSTALL and follow the instructions.
-
- ~0CNOTE:~07 You _must_ run the INSTALL batch file, as it creates a directory
- and runs the self-extracting DOTMANIA.EXE program.
-
-
-
- ~0ERUNNING
- =======~07
- You will find that Dot-Mania is very easy and intuitive to use; everything is
- controlled via the mouse, the keyboard isn't used at all (this should make it
- nice and easy for your kids!)
-
- The icons on the control panel perform the following tasks:
- Filing Cabinet
- This brings up a list of pictures. Use the up and down buttons to
- scroll up and down in the list (you can keep the button held down to
- scroll quickly). Click on the name of the picture you want, then on
- the Ok button to load it.
-
- Question Mark
- If you're joining the dots and don't know where the next dot is, click
- on this icon and the next dot will flash. This icon only works when
- you're actually joining the dots, it'll do nothing at other times.
-
- Printer
- Clicking on this icon will print the current picture. You can print
- the picture at any time; after it's just been loaded will print it with
- dots and numbers, after you've finished the picture will print it
- completed without dots and numbers. Only black areas of the picture
- are printed (ie the picture outline, dots, and numbers), not any
- colours in the picture.
-
- ABC / 123
- This icon toggles between 123 and ABC mode. 123 mode lets you fill the
- picture in in numerical order, ABC mode lets you use alphabetic order.
- Choose the mode you want, then load in a new picture. Note that if the
- picture you load has more than 26 dots in it, then Dot-Mania will
- automatically switch to 123 mode because ABC mode can only have 26 or
- less dots (there's only 26 letters in the alphabet, right?)
-
- Quit
- Exits the program.
-
- Once you load a picture, click on the dot labeled "1" (or "A" if you're in
- ABC mode). The dot will turn black and you can then click on the next dot.
- Carry on in this way until the entire picture is finished. As you click on
- each dot you'll get audio feed-back to tell you if you got the correct dot or
- not.
-
- Once the picture is complete, a colour palette will pop-up at the bottom of
- the picture. Click on the colour you want to use then on the area in the
- picture you want to colour in.
-
-
-
- ~0EKEYBOARD
- ========~07
- There are a couple of commands that can be entered via the keyboard:
- M : Skip to the next music track
- A : Auto-draw mode - automatically draws in the lines for you (this
- command was initially to help the author while developing the
- program, but we left it in for those that like to colour in but
- not do the dots)
-
-
-
- ~0EMOUSE
- =====~07
- If you encounter problems with the mouse (specifically with the arrow pointer
- getting stuck or not being able to move beyond a certain point), please
- ensure you're using the latest version of your mouse driver. Version 8.10 of
- the Microsoft mouse driver can cause problems with Dot-Mania, version 9.00
- works fine.
-
-
-
- ~0EPRINTERS
- ========~07
- Dot-Mania was written to run on printers that are Epson FX compatible. If
- the results you get when you print are garbled or look like junk, then you
- will have to modify your printer setup.
-
- Consult your printer manual to see if there is a way to get your printer to
- emulate an Epson FX. This may require changing a dip switch or using the
- printer's front panel to set the emulation mode.
-
- Dot-Mania been tested and works with the following printers:
- Panasonic 1080
- Panasonic 1180
- Epson Stylus 800 inkjet
-
- If you have a laser printer, then you may be out of luck. Consult your
- printer manuals for more information (try looking in the index for
- "Emulation").
-
-
-
- ~0ETEMPORARY FILES
- ===============~07
- Dot-Mania needs to be able to create temporary files while it's running. It
- will look for a TEMP or TMP environment variable, and if found will put all
- its temporary files in the directory specified. If no environment variable
- is found, then the current directory is checked to see if temp files can be
- written there. If not (maybe because the program is being run directly from
- a CD-ROM) then the root directory on drive C is checked. If Dot-Mania can't
- write to any of these places, then the program will abort. Under normal
- circumstances, all temporary files are deleted when the program has finished
- with them.
-
-
-
- ~0ESOUND CARDS
- ===========~07
- Dot-Mania automatically detects if you've got a Sound Blaster installed in
- your machine and makes use of it. However, please ensure that you've got the
- SOUND and BLASTER environment variables setup correctly. SOUND points to
- your Sound Blaster directory (normally something like "SOUND=C:\SB" or
- "SOUND=C:\SB16"), and BLASTER contains your SB interrupt and port setup
- (normally something like "BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3"). These environment
- variables are normally setup in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. See your Sound
- Blaster manual for more details.
-
- To hear background music, the SBFMDRV driver must be loaded before Dot-Mania
- is run. The supplied DOT2DOT.BAT batch file handles loading and unloading
- this driver, but if you don't have a SOUND environment variable setup
- pointing to the directory containing the SBFMDRV.COM file, then you may need
- to modify this batch file to point to your Sound Blaster directory. If
- you've got a Sound Blaster and don't hear any background music, then you know
- that you've got something setup incorrectly (either an incorrect environment
- variable or DOT2DOT.BAT needs modifying). The DOT2DOT.BAT file will try to
- find the SBFMDRV.COM file using the following steps:
-
- 1. If the SOUND variable doesn't exist, goto step 3.
- 2. If the SBFMDRV.COM file exists in the directory pointed to by the
- SOUND variable then run it, else goto step 6.
- 3. Look for SBFMDRV.COM in a \SB directory, and if found run it.
- 4. Look for SBFMDRV.COM in a \SB16 directory, and if found run it.
- 5. Can't find SBFMDRV.COM, so give up looking for it and just run
- Dot-Mania without music.
- 6. To have reached this step then a SOUND variable must exist, but no
- SBFMDRV.COM can be found. This is probably due to a Sound Blaster
- compatible card (ie a non-Creative Labs card), which has set up a
- SOUND variable but doesn't come with the SBFMDRV.COM program. Try
- running the SBFMDRV.COM program supplied with Dot-Mania (this may
- work on 100% compatible cards, but isn't guaranteed).
-
- Note that your card must be a Sound Blaster or 100% compatible (some sound
- cards aren't 100% compatible and may play the sound effects faster or slower
- than they are ment to be played).
