  13. 16   INT. CAVES - LOWER LEVEL - DAY

  16.  LADDER nows links this level with the ledge above.
  17.     A short distance from the vortex's frame we see an 
  18.     ALIEN CONTROL PANEL and some EQUIPMENT HOUSINGS, all 
  19.     composed of incredibly ancient composite materials. An 
  20.     alien SUPPORT BEAM has fallen atop the equipment, some 
  21.     of which is open, revealing patches of CIRCUITRY of a 
  22.     kind we've never seen before. Several STARFLEET 
  23.     EQUIPMENT CASES are organized next to the alien 
  24.     devices, and Federation field LIGHTING KITS are in 
  25.     place.

  27.     O'Brien scans the alien control panel with a TRICORDER. 
  28.     He's intent, focused, nothing else matters to him. 
  29.     Nearby, DAX is studying the portal itself. Two N.D. 
  30.     ENGINEERS are working in the b.g.
  31.  
  32.     Keiko sits on an equipment case, dried tear-tracks on 
  33.     her face, staring blankly toward her husband. She's 
  34.     cradling a sleeping Kirayoshi wrapped in a blanket. 
  35.     KIRA steps down from the ladder and pauses to hug 
  36.     Keiko. The women don't need words to share what 
  37.     they're feeling. Kira then proceeds to Dax.

  40.                 (re: the portal) 
  41.             Have you figured out what this 
  42.             thing is yet?
  43.  
  44.     Dax shoots a look the O'Briens' way, pitches her voice 
  45.     low -- she doesn't want them to have to be reminded of 
  46.     what happened to their daughter.

  49.             It's some sort of time portal. 
  50.             From the chroniton signature, we 
  51.             think it sent Molly about three 
  52.             hundred years into the past.

  54.     Kira looks down, takes in this grim news.
