  17.             were governed by fluctuations in 
  18.             the wormhole's subspace field. 
  19.             Dax's calculations showed that the 
  20.             next time he appeared, I'd be an 
  21.             old man.
  22.                 (a beat) 
  23.             I decided to put aside my novel 
  24.             and try to find a way to help him. 
  25.             And so, at the age of thirty-
  26.             seven, I went back to school and 
  27.             started studying subspace 
  28.             mechanics.

  30.     Jake takes a breath, what he has to say next is

  35.             patient... she supported what I 
  36.             was trying to do. But I got so 
  37.             caught up in my work I didn't 
  38.             notice I was losing her. By the 
  39.             time I became a graduate student, 
  40.             we weren't living together 
  41.             anymore. And by the time I 
  42.             entered my doctoral program, 
  43.             it was over between us.
