  5.     FADE IN:

  7. 11   EXT. SHAKAAR'S FARM - DAY (OPTICAL)
  8.  
  9.     Kira MATERIALIZES on a vast desolate plain.  Although there 
  10.     are no crops visible, the presence of fences, and abandoned 
  11.     equipment identify this as farmland.  Kira bends down and 
  12.     picks up a handful of the dry soil... she rubs it between 
  13.     her fingers... sniffs it... crumbles it in her hands.  The 
  14.     soil is sandy... it's doubtful that anything will grow here.  
  15.     Kira looks around and sees a lone BAJORAN FARMHOUSE standing 
  16.     nearby.  The house has seen better days and it looks shabby.
  17.  
  18.     Kira takes a deep breath and then walks up onto the front 
  19.     porch.  She presses a door panel... no response.  After a 
  20.     beat, she pounds on the door... but still nothing.  She moves 
  21.     over to a window and tries to peer through it when she is 
  22.     suddenly GRABBED from behind and whirled around.  Kira's 
  23.     combat instincts flare and she cocks back an arm for a killing 
  24.     blow, but then freezes as she sees that the man holding her 
  25.     is SHAKAAR.  Shakaar is a handsome, solidly built man in his 
  26.     late thirties to early forties.  He has a piercing, 
  27.     intelligent gaze and always seems to be thinking.  His face 
  28.     has a prematurely aged look to it -- the look of a man who's 
  29.     been through a lot at an early age.  His hair is long and 
  30.     falls to his shoulders.
  31.  
  32.                     KIRA
  33.             Shakaar.
  34.  
  35.     They both stare at each other for a long moment... neither 
  36.     one sure what to feel or say.
  37.  
  38.                     SHAKAAR
  39.             You cut your hair.
  40.  
  41.                     KIRA
  42.             You let yours grow.
  43.  
  44.                     SHAKAAR
  45.             I liked you better the old way.
  46.  
  47.                     KIRA
  48.             I was just thinking the same thing... 
  49.             about you.
  50.  
  51.     A quick beat and then Shakaar smiles and takes her in his 
  52.     arms and gives her a warm hug.  Kira returns it.
