  6.     Sisko ENTERS.  It's late.  He's tired.  The first thing he 
  7.     sees is a mopey Jake lounging on the couch.

  9.                     SISKO
  10.             Jake?  What are you doing up?
  11.  
  12.                     JAKE
  13.             I couldn't sleep.
  14.  
  15.                     SISKO
  16.             So, how was your date?  It was 
  17.             tonight, wasn't it?
  18.  
  19.                     JAKE
  20.             It was supposed to be.  She couldn't 
  21.             make it.
  22.  
  23.     Sisko sits down, ready to give his son a fatherly pep talk.

  25.                     SISKO
  26.             It happens.
  27.  
  28.                     JAKE
  29.             She said her father wouldn't let her 
  30.             go out with me.
  31.  
  32.                     SISKO
  33.             Why not?
  34.  
  35.                     JAKE
  36.             Because I'm not a Bajoran.

  38.     Sisko sighs in weary frustration.

  40.                     SISKO
  41.             That's not much of a reason.
  42.                 (a beat)
  43.             Jake... there are things happening 
  44.             on Bajor... bad things... I'm sorry 
  45.             you've become a victim of them.  You 
  46.             don't deserve it.  Nobody does.

  48.     He leans over and pulls Jake to him, kisses him on the head, 
  49.     holds on to him tightly.  A beat, then...

  51.                     SISKO
  52.                 (continuing)
  53.             Now it's time for bed, okay?
