  14.     civilian).  She gazes at him dreamily as he tells his tale.

  16.                     BASHIR
  17.             ... So there I was, fighting the 
  18.             toughest battle of my life.  I looked 
  19.             around hoping to spot a friendly 
  20.             face... only to discover my colleagues 
  21.             were gone...
  22.                 (a beat for dramatic 
  23.                 effect)
  24.             I was... alone.
  25.  
  26.     The Bajoran beauty hanging on his every word, nods 
  27.     sympathetically.

  29. 2    NEW ANGLE

  31.     to include O'BRIEN, seated at a nearby table.  He can't decide 
  32.     what annoys him more, Bashir's "performance," or the women's 
  33.     moonstruck response.

  36.             I admit, for a moment there, I 
  37.             considered giving up.  I could feel 
  38.             the seconds ticking away... panic 
  39.             building up inside me.  I knew my 
  40.             only chance was to trust my instincts.  
  41.             I closed my eyes...
  42.                 (he reenacts the moment)
  43.             ... took a deep breath... and just 
  44.             like that it came to me.  The answer 
  45.             I was waiting for... A pericardial 
  46.             membrane.
  47.                 (his eyes pop open)
  48.             I looked down and wrote it into my 
  49.             computer terminal, just as the buzzer 
  50.             sounded ending the exam.

  52.             And that, I suppose, is the stuff of 
  53.             which salutatorians are made.
