  5. HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DEEP-SKY SURVEY FINDS 
  6. HUGE NUMBERS OF IRREGULAR AND PECULIAR GALAXIES

  8. This is a NASA Hubble Space Telescope image of a variety of galaxies
  9. with irregular and peculiar shapes.  These galaxies are so far away
  10. that they are seen when the universe was a fraction of its current
  11. age.  The bright blue regions indicate a rapid episode of star
  12. formation.  Hubble reveals that these objects once far outnumbered
  13. large galaxies like our Milky Way, but have faded or self-destructed by
  14. today.

  16. This image is part of a serendipitous sky survey which has been
  17. conducted over the past three years by Professor Richard Griffiths and
  18. colleagues at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, with a team
  19. of astronomers in the United States and Britain.

  21. The survey is one of the key projects for Hubble.  Over the past three
  22. years the deep survey has uncovered a bizarre variety of shapes and
  23. structures in distant galaxies, which previously appeared as fuzzy
  24. blobs from ground-based telescopes.
