  82. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  121. 2.1 MANUFACTURER

  130. 2.2 MATERIALS
  131.  
  132.     A.  Coatings:  Ready mixed, except for field catalyzed
  133.         coatings; having good flow and brushing properties and
  134.         consistent drying or curing behavior, free of sags and
  135.         streaks.
  136.  
  137.     B.  Accessory Materials:  Linseed oil, turpentine, paint
  138.         thinners and other materials recommended by coatings
  139.         manufacturer as necessary to achieve finishes specified.
  140.  
  141.     C.  Patching and Surface Preparation:  Latex fillers as
  142.         recommended by coatings manufacturer.

  145. PART 3  EXECUTION
  146.  
  147. 3.1 EXAMINATION
  148.  
  149.     A.  Verify that site environmental conditions are appropriate
  150.         and substrates are in proper condition to receive work of
  151.         this section.
  152.  
  153.     B.  Verify that shop applied primers are compatible with
  154.         specified finish coats.
  155.  
  156.     C.  Measure moisture content of surfaces using an electronic
  157.         moisture meter.  Do not begin application of coatings
  158.         unless moisture content of surfaces is below the
  159.         following maximum values:
  160.         1.  Gypsum soffits:  12 percent.
  161.         2.  Plaster:  12 percent.
  162.         3.  Masonry surfaces:  12 percent.
  163.         4.  Wood surfaces:  15 percent.
  164.         5.  Vertical concrete surfaces:  12 percent.
  165.         6.  Horizontal concrete surfaces:  8 percent.

  167. 3.2 PREPARATION
  168.  
  169.     A.  Remove or mask electrical plates, hardware, light fixture
  170.         trim, and similar fittings prior to beginning painting
  171.         operations.
  172.  
  173.     B.  Correct defects and clean surfaces affecting work of this
  174.         section.  Remove existing coatings that are flaking or
  175.         otherwise in unacceptable condition to receive paint.
  176.  
  177.     C.  Seal with shellac or other coating acceptable to paint
  178.         manufacturer any marks or defects that might bleed
  179.         through paint finishes.
  180.  
  181.     D.  Remove mildew from impervious surfaces by scrubbing with
  182.         solution of trisodium phosphate and bleach.  Rinse with
  183.         clean water and allow substrate to dry.
  184.  
  185.     E.  Concrete and Masonry Surfaces:  Remove dirt, loose
  186.         mortar, scale, salts, alkalies, and other detrimental
  187.         substances.  Remove oils and grease with solution of
  188.         trisodium phosphate; rinse well and allow to dry.
  189.  
  190.     F.  Concrete Floors:  Remove dirt and grease, acid etch, and
  191.         rinse with clear water.
  192.  
  193.     G.  Plaster and Stucco:  Fill hairline cracks, small holes,
  194.         and imperfections with patching compound, then smooth
  195.         patches to match adjacent surfaces.
  196.  
  197.     H.  Exterior Wood for Opaque Finish:  Remove dirt and foreign
  198.         matter. Patch knots, pitch pockets, and other surface
  199.         imperfections with patching compound and seal with sealer
  200.         recommended by paint manufacturer.
  201.  
  202.     I.  Exterior Wood for Transparent Finish:  Remove dirt and
  203.         foreign matter. Seal knots and pitch pockets with sealer
  204.         recommended by stain manufacturer.  Fill nail holes and
  205.         other surface imperfections with tinted calking compound
  206.         after sealer has been applied.
  207.  
  208.     J.  Wood Doors:  Seal top and bottom edges with specified
  209.         primer.
  210.  
  211.     K.  Metal Doors:  Seal top and bottom edges with specified
  212.         primer.
  213.  
  214.     L.  Galvanized Metal Surfaces:  Remove oils and wash with
  215.         solvent.
  216.  
  217.     M.  Aluminum Surfaces:  Remove surface contamination by steam
  218.         or high pressure water.  Remove oxidation by acid etching
  219.         and solvent washing.  Apply specified primer as soon as
  220.         cleaned surfaces are dry.
  221.  
  222. 3.3 APPLICATION
  223.  
  224.     A.  Apply paint products in accordance with manufacturer's
  225.         printed instructions.  Do not apply coatings to surfaces
  226.         that are not dry.
  227.  
  228.     B.  Apply each coat to uniform thickness and finish, with
  229.         each coat slightly darker than preceding coat.  Allow
  230.         each coat to dry thoroughly before applying next coat.
  231.  
  232.     C.  Sand wood and metal surfaces lightly between coats.
  233.         Vacuum surfaces free of loose particles prior to
  234.         application of next coat.
  235.  
  236. 3.4 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
  237.  
  238.     A.  Keep project premises free of painting-related debris.
  239.         Collect material that may constitute a fire hazard, place
  240.         in closed metal containers, and remove daily from site.
  241.  
  242.     B.  Protect work adjacent to painting operations from paint
  243.         spatters and spills.  Immediately remove paint that falls
  244.         on finished surfaces not scheduled to receive paint,
  245.         using materials and techniques that will not damage
  246.         affected surfaces.
  247.  
  248. 3.5 SCHEDULE
  249. NOTE ** For each substrate, where available, a water-based
  250.         coating system and a solvent-based coating system
  251.         are listed.  Select substrates, finishes and
  252.         product type required for Project; delete others.
