  53. 1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
  54.  
  55.     A.  General Polymers Corporation System No. 1100 Epoxy Thin-
  56.         Set Terrazzo, 1/4 inch - 3/8 inch in thickness, comprised
  57.         of the following components:
  58.         1.  3578 Universal Penetrating Epoxy Primer.
  59.         2.  3552 or 3553 EPO-FLEX Flexible Epoxy Membrane.
  60.         3.  3520 Epoxy Terrazzo Matrix binder resin.
  61.         4.  5270 Epoxy Filler.
  62.         5.  Marble chips, sized for finished thickness.
  63.         6.  Zinc, brass, or plastic divider strips.
  64.         7.  3520G Epoxy Terrazzo Grout, with 5290 Grout Filler or
  65.             5270 Epoxy Filler as grout coat.
  66.         8.  4501 Acrylic Sealer or 3744 NOVO-COTE Chemical
  67.             Resistant Epoxy as seal coat.

  69.     B.  Completed system shall comply with the following minimum
  70.         performance requirements:
  71.         1.  Hardness, Shore D, per ASTM D 2240:  75.
  72.         2.  Compressive Strength, per ASTM D 695:  11,000 psi.
  73.         3.  Tensile Strength, per ASTM D 638:  6,000 psi.
  74.         4.  Flexural Strength, per ASTM D 790:  10,000 psi.

  76. 1.5 SUBMITTALS
  77.  
  78.     A.  Submit under provisions of Section 01300.
  79.  
  80.     B.  Product Data:  Provide manufacturer's specifications on
  81.         cured system and individual components, including
  82.         physical and performance properties, test results, and
  83.         Material Safety Data Sheets.
  84.  
  85.     C.  Color Chart:  Provide manufacturer's standard color chart
  86.         for color selection.
  87.  
  88.     D.  Samples:  Submit cured samples not less than 6 inches by
  89.         6 inches for verification of color selection and finish
  90.         texture. Include 6 inch length of divider strip.
  91.  
  92.     E.  Shop Drawings:  Indicate layout and spacing of divider
  93.         strips and control joints.  Provide details of terrazzo
  94.         termination and transition to other flooring.
  95.  
  96.     F.  Manufacturer's Installation Instructions:  Include
  97.         special procedures such as installation of control and
  98.         expansion joints, perimeter conditions requiring special
  99.         attention, requirements for preparation of substrate, and
  100.         final finishing and protection.
  101.  
  102.     G.  Manufacturer's Certificate:  Certify that all components
  103.         of system comply with specified requirements.
  104.         1.  Include calculations and packing slip for this
  105.             project, signed by a company officer, verifying that
  106.             the quantity of material being furnished for the
  107.             project will achieve the required coverage and
  108.             thickness.
  109.  
  110. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
  111.  
  112.     A.  Manufacturer's Qualifications:  Obtain all components for
  113.         flooring system from a single company specializing in
  114.         manufacturing the products specified in this section and
  115.         with not fewer than ____ years of documented experience.
  116.  
  117.     B.  Installer's Qualifications:  A company certified in
  118.         writing by the flooring system manufacturer, having
  119.         skilled mechanics with not fewer than three years of
  120.         satisfactory experience in installation of flooring
  121.         systems of the type specified in this section.
  122.         1.  Furnish a list of similar flooring projects installed
  123.             within the previous ___ years.  Include project name,
  124.             area of terrazzo flooring actually installed, and
  125.             contact information.
  126.         2.  Furnish resumes of key project personnel, detailing
  127.             relevant experience.
  128.  
  129. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
  130.  
  131.     A.  Deliver materials in manufacturer's undamaged, unopened
  132.         containers clearly marked with the following information:
  133.         1.  Product name and number.
  134.         2.  Manufacturer name and contact information.
  135.         3.  Component designation.
  136.         4.  Product mix ratio.
  137.         5.  Health and safety information.
  138.         6.  CHEMTREC emergency response information.
  139.  
  140.     B.  Promptly inspect delivered material to verify quantities,
  141.         conformance to requirements, and undamaged condition.
  142.  
  143.     C.  Handle materials using methods that will prevent damage.
  144.  
  145.     D.  Store materials in accordance with manufacturer's
  146.         instructions, keeping seals and labels intact and
  147.         legible.  Maintain temperatures within allowable range.
  148.         Do not use materials beyond manufacturer's maximum
  149.         recommended shelf life.
  150.  
  151. 1.8 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  152.  
  153.     A.  Do not begin installation until slab temperatures have
  154.         been brought to a minimum temperature of 50 degrees F.
  155.         Maintain that temperature during installation and for not
  156.         less than 72 hours after installation has been completed.
  157.  
  158.     B.  Do not begin installation until building's permanent
  159.         lighting system has been completed and is operational.
  160.         Maintain lighting at a minimum uniform level of 50
  161.         footcandles in areas where the epoxy terrazzo flooring
  162.         system is being installed.
  163.  
  164.     C.  Provide adequate ventilation during installation to
  165.         prevent accumulation of toxic volatile compounds.
  166.  
  167. 1.9 WARRANTY
  168.  
  169.     A.  Provide warranty signed by manufacturer and installer,
  170.         agreeing to repair or replace defective materials within
  171.         a period of one year after Date of Substantial
  172.         Completion.  Defective materials shall include epoxy
  173.         terrazzo that has lost bond to substrate and areas that
  174.         have worn through to substrate with normal use.

  177. PART 2  PRODUCTS
  178.  
  179. 2.1 MANUFACTURERS
  180.  
  181.     A.  Products of this section are based on materials and
  182.         systems produced by General Polymers Corporation, located
  183.         at 145 Caldwell Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45216. ASD.  Tel:

  186.         substitutions.
  187.         1.  Substitutions will not be acceptable.
  188.         2.  Substitutions will be considered only in accordance
  189.             with submittal provisions specified in Section 01600.

  191. 2.2 PRODUCTS

  193.     A.  Primer:  3578 Universal Penetrating Epoxy Primer.
  194.  
  195.     B.  Flexible Epoxy Membrane:  3552 EPO-FLEX (gray).

  209.     G.  Grout Coat:  3520G Epoxy Terrazzo Grout, with one of the

  215.         1.  4501 Acrylic Sealer.

  220.         thickness of terrazzo, and exposed portion as follows:
  221.         1.  Material:  Zinc.

  224.             manufacturer's standards.
  225.         4.  Width:  1/8 inch nominal.
  226.         5.  Width:  3/16 inch nominal.

  230. 2.3 COLORS
  231.  
  232.     A.  Match approved samples.

  235. PART 3  EXECUTION
  236.  
  237. 3.1 EXAMINATION
  238.  
  239.     A.  Verify that substrates are in proper condition to receive
  240.         thin-set epoxy terrazzo.
  241.  
  242.     B.  Test concrete substrates to verify that moisture content
  243.         does not exceed levels recommended by manufacturer of
  244.         epoxy terrazzo materials.
  245.  
  246.     C.  Verify that substrate is sloped to drains and that drains
  247.         are properly installed at correct elevation for finished
  248.         epoxy terrazzo thickness.
  249.  
  250. 3.2 PREPARATION
  251.  
  252.     A.  Prepare concrete substrate to receive thin-set epoxy
  253.         terrazzo by removing laitance and opening surface.
  254.  
  255.     B.  Achieve surface profile of concrete similar to medium
  256.         grit sandpaper, free of bond-inhibiting contaminants, by
  257.         means of light brush grit blasting.
  258.  
  259.     C.  Repair non-moving cracks in substrate with semi-rigid
  260.         epoxy, complying with General Polymers Concrete 102.
  261.  
  262.     D.  Prepare edge conditions in accordance with approved shop
  263.         drawings.
  264.  
  265.     E.  Apply primer in accordance with manufacturer's
  266.         instructions.
  267.  
  268. 3.3 INSTALLATION
  269.  
  270.     A.  Apply each component of the epoxy thin-set terrazzo
  271.         flooring system in strict compliance with manufacturer's
  272.         written installation instructions.
  273.  
  274.     B.  Adhere strictly to manufacturer's published mixing
  275.         methods and comply with limitations on recoat windows,
  276.         cure times, and environmental conditions.
  277.  
  278.     C.  Install divider and control joint strips in locations
  279.         indicated and at proper elevation.
  280. NOTE ** Delete one of the following two paragraphs.
  281.  
  282.     D.  Place terrazzo mix over prepared substrate to achieve
  283.         minimum finished thickness of 1/4 inch.
  284.  
  285.     E.  Place terrazzo mix over prepared substrate to achieve
  286.         nominal finished thickness of 3/8 inch.
  287.  
  288.     F.  Cure thin-set epoxy in compliance with manufacturer's
  289.         instructions, taking care to prevent contamination.
  290.  
  291. 3.4 FINISHING
  292.  
  293.     A.  Produce final surface to match approved samples.
  294.  
  295.     B.  Grind terrazzo surfaces with power disc machine,
  296.         sequencing from coarse to fine grit abrasive, using a wet
  297.         method.
  298.  
  299.     C.  Apply grout mix matching mortar to fill honeycomb exposed
  300.         during grinding process.  Remove patch mix by grinding
  301.         with fine grit abrasive.
  302. NOTE ** Delete the following article if field testing of
  303.         finished terrazzo thickness is not desired.  Be
  304.         aware that patched core areas cannot be made to
  305.         match surrounding areas precisely, so cores should
  306.         not be taken in areas where appearance is critical.
  307.  
  308. 3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
  309.  
  310.     A.  At Owner's discretion and upon direction by Architect,
  311.         take 1 inch diameter cores at locations indicated to
  312.         verify system thickness, at rate not to exceed 1 per
  313.         1,000 square feet.
  314.  
  315.     B.  Remove epoxy terrazzo in areas where cores indicate less
  316.         than specified thickness, and replace with new material
  317.         at Contractor's expense.
  318.  
  319.     C.  Patch cored areas where cores indicate specified
  320.         thickness has been achieved, matching appearance of
  321.         surrounding area.
  322.  
  323. 3.6 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
  324.  
  325.     A.  Scrub and clean epoxy terrazzo surfaces with cleaner in
  326.         accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
  327.  
  328.     B.  Immediately after drying, apply sealer in accordance with
  329.         manufacturer's instructions.
  330.     
  331. 3.7 PROTECTION
  332.  
  333.     A.  Do not permit traffic over finished terrazzo surfaces.
  334. NOTE ** Delete paragraph above or below.
  335.  
  336.     B.  Protect epoxy terrazzo surfaces from damage and wear
  337.         during remaining construction period, using temporary
  338.         coverings as recommended by the manufacturer.
