- 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

- A. Deliver joint seals to site in manufacturer's original
- unopened containers; store and move to installation
- location in original containers.

- B. Store materials in dry, enclosed area, off the ground,
- out of direct sunlight.
-
- C. Store materials at minimum of 68 degrees F (20 degrees C)
- for at least 24 hours prior to installation, regardless
- of temperature at location of installation.

- 1.7 WARRANTY

- A. Provide manufacturer's 10-year warranty against product
- defects.

- 2.2 MATERIALS
-
- A. Preformed Joint Seals - Performance Requirements:
- 1. Installed water resistance: No penetration at 50
- percent compression.
- 2. Movement capability: 100 percent compression and
- expansion, with 100 percent recovery.
- 3. Water absorption: Maximum 3 percent of weight, when
- tested at 50 percent compression for 100 hours under
- 6 ft (1830 mm) of water.
- 4. Ultraviolet light resistant.
- 5. Mildew resistant.
- 6. Non-staining to adjacent materials.
- 7. Non-bleeding, at up to 212 degrees F (100 degrees C)
- and 20 percent compression.
- 8. Resistant to gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel,
- solvents, salts, anti-freeze, industrial cleaners,
- corrosive vapors, and acids.
- 9. Flammability (UL 94): VO, self-extinguishing.
- 10. Tensile strength (ASTM D 3574): 21.8 psi (150 kPa),
- min.
- 11. Compression set (ASTM D 3574): 2 percent, max.
- 12. Shear strength: 8 N/cu cm, min.
- 13. Resistance to aging (ASTM G 53, 825 hrs): No more
- than minor surface degradation.
- 14. Softening point (ASTM D 816): 50 degrees C, minimum.
- 15. Flash point: 590 degrees F (310 degrees C), min.
- NOTE ** The following joint seal is the type used for most
- vertical and horizontal joints. It is available 1)
- without any special surface (Polytite STANDARD), 2)
- with colored elastomeric facing (Polytite "R"), or
- 3) with a bond breaker face for subsequent
- application of a silicone or urethane sealant
- (Polytite "B").

- B. Preformed Joint Seals (Standard): Polytite Manufacturing
- Corp. "Polytite"; precompressed, self-expanding
- polyurethane foam impregnated with hydrophobic polymer
- waterproofing agent, with self-adhesive faces.
- NOTE ** Delete one or both of the following two paragraphs.
- 1. Exposed surfaces: Puncture-resistant elastomeric
- coating; "Polytite R"; color as selected.
- 2. Exposed surfaces: Bond breaker release agent;
- "Polytite B."
- 3. Density: 10 lb/cu ft (160 kg/cu m).
- NOTE ** Verify the conditions in the following paragraph.
- 4. Thickness: Selected by Contractor for minimum ___
- percent material compression, based on manufacturer's
- data and expected width of actual joints under most
- extreme conditions.
- NOTE ** Delete one or both of the following two paragraphs.
- 5. Color: Black.
- 6. Color: Selected from manufacturer's full range.
- NOTE ** The following joint seal is intended for horizontal
- applications that are subject to solvents or fuels
- such as those found in road and bridge joints,
- parking garages and airport runways. It is also
- suitable for joints subject to heavy traffic or
- point loading such as fork lift or high heel
- traffic.

- C. Traffic Joint Seals: Polytite Manufacturing Corp.
- "Polytite N"; precompressed, self-expanding polyurethane
- foam impregnated with neoprene copolymer waterproofing
- agent, with self-adhesive faces.
- 1. Density: 10 lb/cu ft (160 kg/cu m).
- NOTE ** Verify the conditions in the following paragraph.
- 2. Thickness: Selected by Contractor for minimum 50
- percent material compression based on manufacturer's
- data and expected width of actual joint under most
- extreme conditions.
- NOTE ** The following joint seal is intended for joints 2
- inches and wider that are subject to extreme
- movement, such as is anticipated in seismic design.

- D. Seismic Joint Seals: Polytite Manufacturing Corp.
- "Seismic Polytite"; dense PVC foam core, laminated with
- polyurethane foam impregnated with hydrophobic polymer
- waterproofing agent, with self-adhesive faces.
- 1. Density: 16 lb/cu ft (260 kg/ cu m).
- NOTE ** Verify the conditions in the following paragraph.
- 2. Thickness: Selected by Contractor for minimum ___
- percent material compression, based on manufacturer's
- data and expected width of actual joint under most
- extreme conditions.

- E. Joint Sealant for Application over Preformed Joint Seals:
- As specified in Section 07900.

- PART 3 EXECUTION
-
- 3.1 EXAMINATION
-
- A. Verify that:
- 1. Joints are clean, dry, sound, smooth, straight and
- parallel, and otherwise ready to receive joint seals.
- 2. Joint seals are of the correct width to provide
- specified compression.
- 3. Joints are of sufficient depth.
-
- B. Do not proceed with installation until detrimental
- conditions have been corrected.
-
- 3.2 PREPARATION
-
- A. Clean and prime joints where required or recommended by
- manufacturer.
-
- B. Install bond breaker on back surface of joint if
- necessary.
-
- 3.3 INSTALLATION
-
- A. Install joint seals in accordance with manufacturer's
- instructions.
-
- B. Do not install joint seals when temperature is below -14
- degrees F (-25 degrees C) or above 95 degrees F (35
- degrees C).
-
- C. Do not install joint seals in rain or snow.
-
- D. Do not use scrap material.
-
- 3.4 SCHEDULE
- NOTE ** Edit the following schedule to suit the project.
- The locations shown are suggested examples, based
- on the suitability of the products for those
- applications. Carefully coordinate this schedule
- with any other sealant schedule included in the
- specifications or on the drawings.

- A. Preformed Joint Seals (Standard): Use in the following
- locations:
- 1. Vertical exterior joints wider than 1-1/4 inches (32
- mm).
- 2. Masonry expansion and control joints.
- 3. Vertical joints in concrete, stone, or masonry.
- 4. Vertical joints between different materials.
- 5. Below grade joints in foundation walls.
- 6. Exterior joints around door and window openings.
- 7. Concealed joints in metal curtain wall, metal panels,
- and similar applications.
- 8. Joints in exterior insulation and finish system.
- 9. Interior expansion and control joints.
- 10. Other joints indicated to be sealed, that are not
- specified to be sealed with another material.
- 11. All other joints in exterior envelope that are not
- specified to be sealed with another material, whether
- indicated to be sealed or not.

- B. Traffic Joint Seals: Use in the following locations:
- 1. Parking deck floor slab joints.
- 2. Bridge deck joints.
- 3. Concrete paving joints, including sidewalks,
- terraces, and drives.
- 4. Runway paving joints.
- 5. Other joints subject to gasoline, jet fuel, or other
- solvents.
- 6. Interior floor expansion and control joints.
- 7. Other joints so indicated.

- C. Seismic Joint Seals: Use in the following locations:
- 1. All exterior vertical joints 2 inches (50 mm) wide or
- wider.
- 2. Other joints so indicated.
