- NOTE ** Western Red Cedar trim on the exterior of
- residential, commercial, or industrial buildings is
- compatible with all contemporary cladding
- materials. It offers the advantages of dimensional
- stability, longevity, resistance to decay, natural
- good looks, and the ability to accept a wide range
- of finishes. It is a good choice for corner
- boards, fascia, skirting, and window and door trim.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** See other WRCLA sections for timber construction
- and landscape structures, cedar decking, and cedar
- siding.

-
- 2.2 MATERIALS
-
- A. Kiln-Dried Clear Trim Boards: Western Red Cedar graded
- to meet NLGA "Grading Standards," paragraph 200, and
- WCLIB "Grading Standards," paragraph 102.
- NOTE ** Select grade(s) and surface texture(s) of Western
- Red Cedar trim boards graded as finish lumber from
- paragraphs below, as required for project. Delete
- paragraphs not required for project.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Clear grades have a limited number of natural
- characteristics and are specified when appearance
- of the highest quality is required. Clear Heart is
- the highest grade, including only pieces with
- heartwood on the exposed face. Many pieces are
- completely clear, others have minor imperfections
- that do not detract from the appearance.
- 1. Grade: Clear Heart.
- NOTE ** A Clear grade permits somewhat more imperfections
- than Clear Heart, but is still restricted to pieces
- with excellent appearance.
- 2. Grade: A Clear and Better.
- 3. Grade: A Clear.
- NOTE ** B Clear grade permits slightly larger and more
- numerous characteristics than A Grade. Occasional
- pieces may require trimming to yield high grade
- pieces in shorter lengths. Most often B Clear is
- supplied as a percentage with A Clear, as indicated
- in the first subparagraph below; determine and
- insert the percentage allowable for the project if
- selecting this method.
- 4. Grade: A Clear with a percentage of B Clear allowed.
- a. B Clear allowed: ________ percent.
- 5. Grade: B Clear.
- NOTE ** S4S Texture provides a uniformly sized product and
- a smooth surface on all four sides for a high
- quality appearance.
- 6. Surface Texture: Surfaced Four Sides (S4S).
- NOTE ** S1S2E Texture allows either the rough sawn or
- surfaced face to be exposed, providing uniform
- width and thickness tolerances. This is the most
- popular choice for trim boards.
- 7. Surface Texture: Surfaced One Side, Two Edges
- (S1S2E).
-
- B. Unseasoned Clear Trim Boards: Western Red Cedar graded
- to meet NLGA "Grading Standards," paragraph 202, WCLIB
- "Grading Standards," paragraph 149, and WWPA "Grading
- Rules," paragraphs 10.11-13.
- NOTE ** Select grade(s) and surface texture(s) of Western
- Red Cedar trim boards from below, as required for
- project.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Clear grades have a limited number of natural
- characteristics and are specified when appearance
- of the highest quality is required. C and Better
- Clear grade is for use where appearance is
- important, such as interior and exterior trim,
- cabinetry, doors, windows, and similar
- applications; available unseasoned.
- 1. Grade: C and Better Clear.
- NOTE ** D Clear grade permits slightly larger and more
- numerous natural characteristics and is used where
- general utility is more important than appearance;
- available unseasoned.
- 2. Grade: D Clear.
- NOTE ** Rough Texture provides a rough sawn texture from
- either circular or band saws, present on all four
- sides.
- 3. Surface Texture: Rough.
- NOTE ** S1S2E Texture allows either the rough sawn or
- surfaced face to be exposed, providing uniform
- width and thickness tolerances. This is the most
- popular choice for trim boards.
- 4. Surface Texture: Surfaced One Side, Two Edges
- (S1S2E).
-
- C. Knotty Trim Boards: Western Red Cedar graded to meet
- NLGA "Grading Standards," WCLIB "Grading Standards," and
- WWPA "Grading Rules."
- NOTE ** Select grade(s), surface texture(s), and moisture
- content of Western Red Cedar knotty trim boards
- from below, as required for project.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Knotty grades present a more rustic appearance than
- Clear grades. They are available seasoned or
- unseasoned. Select Knotty grade has sound, tight
- knots, with other characteristics limited so as not
- to detract from the end use. Typically, this is
- available commercially as Select, allowing 10 to 15
- percent Quality Knotty in rough or surfaced
- products.
- 1. Grade: Select Knotty.
- NOTE ** Appearance Knotty grade is proprietary to WRCLA.
- It is a non-structural product manufactured to meet
- the appearance trim requirements of quality
- projects. This material has highly restricted wane
- allowances to give well-defined corners. It
- contains no holes or other open characteristics;
- available rough sawn or rougher headed in nominal 2-
- inch (50 mm) and thicker sizes.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Upon request, Appearance Knotty trim boards are
- available with structural grading. Select
- Appearance Knotty structural lumber when strength
- characteristics are required; otherwise delete the
- second subparagraph below.
- 2. Grade: Appearance Knotty.
- 3. Grade: Appearance Knotty structural lumber.
- NOTE ** Quality Knotty grade natural growth characteristics
- are not limited as stringently as in Select Knotty.
- Cross cutting may be required on some pieces to
- yield tight knotted trim boards.
- 4. Grade: Quality Knotty.
- NOTE ** Standard and Better grade is suitable for exterior
- construction. Occasional pieces may required
- trimming to yield suitable quality for the intended
- end use. Typically supplied as S1S2E surface
- texture; S4S products may require special ordering.
- 5. Grade: Standard and Better.
- NOTE ** Rough Sawn texture provides a texture from either
- circular or band saws, present on all four sides.
- 6. Surface Texture: Rough Sawn.
- NOTE ** With Rougher Headed texture, the lumber receives
- its texture from a milling process which uses
- roughened planer knives. The rough texture is
- clearly visible on all four sides.
- 7. Surface Texture: Rougher Headed.
- NOTE ** S4S texture provides a uniformly sized product and
- a smooth surface on all four sides for a high
- quality appearance.
- 8. Surface Texture: Surfaced Four Sides (S4S).
- NOTE ** S1S2E texture allows either the rough sawn or
- surfaced face to be exposed, providing uniform
- width and thickness tolerances. This is the most
- popular choice for trim boards.
- 9. Surface Texture: Surfaced One Side, Two Edges
- (S1S2E).
- NOTE ** Select moisture content from the two subparagraphs
- below.
- 10. Moisture Content: Unseasoned.
- 11. Moisture Content: Seasoned.
-
- D. Fasteners:
- NOTE ** Hot-dipped galvanized, aluminum, and stainless
- steel fasteners can be used to fasten Western Red
- Cedar. Other types of nails are not recommended as
- they can rust, disintegrate, and react adversely
- with the natural preservative oils present in
- cedar, resulting in stains and streaks. Copper
- nails also react with cedar and should not be used.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Stainless steel nails are the best choice,
- especially if the wood is to be finished with
- transparent or semi-transparent stain. Use No. 304
- stainless steel for general applications, No. 316
- for seacoast exposures.
- NOTE **
- NOTE ** Select nail type from subparagraphs below or add
- other type fasteners. Delete those not required
- for project.
- 1. Nails: Hot-dipped galvanized.
- 2. Nails: Aluminum.
- 3. Nails: No. 304 stainless steel.
- 4. Nails: No. 316 stainless steel.

- PART 3 EXECUTION
-
- 3.1 PREPARATION
-
- A. Coordinate work with related trades; scribe and cope wood
- trim for accurate fit. Allow installation of related
- work to avoid cutting and patching.
-
- B. Select trim pieces of longest possible lengths. Ensure
- that knots and obvious defects will not interfere with
- placing fasteners or making proper connections. Cut out
- and discard defects that render a piece unfit to serve
- its intended function.
-
- C. Discard trim pieces that are warped, twisted, bowed,
- crooked, or otherwise defective.
-
- 3.2 INSTALLATION
-
- A. Install trim square, plumb, and level, closely fitted and
- securely fastened.
-
- B. Nail pieces to provide penetration of not less than 1-1/2
- inches (38 mm) into solid wood. Use straight, ring, or
- spiral shank nails with thin shanks and blunt points.
-
- 3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
-
- A. Trim work may be rejected, whether or not installed, for
- excessive warp, twist, bow, or crook, as well as for
- improper cutting or fitting.
-
- 3.4 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
-
- A. As work proceeds, maintain premises free of unnecessary
- accumulation of tools, equipment, surplus materials, and
- debris related to this work.
