  14.         STRIP type for non-moving joints and non-chemical
  15.         resistant applications.  Call GREENSTREAK for
  16.         alternative waterstop materials for moving and
  17.         chemical-resistant joints.  Please note that "strip
  18.         waterstop" as defined by Caltrans Std. Spec. 51-
  19.         1.145 is a tackified membrane which is placed
  20.         externally over a joint.  The strip waterstops
  21.         specified in this section are internal and are not
  22.         membranes.

  70. 2.1 MANUFACTURER

  81. 2.2 WATERSTOP MATERIAL
  82. NOTE ** SWELLSTOP is a flexible coiled strip of swellable
  83.         clay and butyl rubber compound designed to swell
  84.         upon contact with water.  The swelling action, when
  85.         confined in NON-MOVING concrete joints, creates a
  86.         long lasting compression seal.  Provide a minimum 2
  87.         inches of normal weight concrete clear cover with
  88.         Swellstop to avoid potential concrete spalling.
  89.         SWELLSTOP is used for vertical and horizontal
  90.         reinforced concrete eight inches thick or greater
  91.         with two rows of reinforcement.  Note that
  92.         SWELLSTOP is not a self-adhering product.

  94.     A.  Swellable Strip Waterstops:  Greenstreak "SWELLSTOP";
  95.         strips composed of bentonite and butyl rubber which
  96.         swells upon contact with water; one inch (25 mm) by 3/4
  97.         inch (19 mm) by 16 ft-8 inch (5078 mm) roll.
  98.         1.  Properties:
  99.             a.  Specific gravity in accordance with ASTM D 71:
  100.                 1.2 minimum, 1.35 max.
  101.             b.  Penetration in accordance with ASTM D 217 at 77
  102.                 degrees F (25 degrees C):  50 minimum, 120
  103.                 maximum at 150 GTL; 80 minimum at 300 GTL.
  104.             c.  Penetration after 21 day aging in accordance with
  105.                 ASTM D 217:  75 at 300 GTL at 130 degrees F (54
  106.                 degrees C).
  107.             d.  Unrestricted swell:  Moisture gain of 200
  108.                 percent, minimum, after 21 days.
  109.             e.  Application temperature range:  5 to 125 degrees
  110.                 F (-15 to 52 degrees C).
  111.             f.  Service temperature range:  -40 to 212 degrees F
  112.                 (-40 to 100 degrees C).

  114.     B.  Accessories:
  115.         1.  Adhesive:  "Swellstop Primer Adhesive"; solvent-
  116.             based, for securing waterstop to horizontal and
  117.             vertical substrates.
  118.         a.  Concrete cut nails if required for securing waterstop
  119.             to vertical joint face.

  122. PART 3  EXECUTION
  123.  
  124. 3.1 INSTALLATION
  125.  
  126.     A.  Butt ends of strip coil.  Press ends together to ensure
  127.         no separation and no air pockets.
  128.  
  129.     B.  Immediately prior to placing second pour, inspect
  130.         waterstop for premature swell, discontinuity, and debris
  131.         contamination.  Replace swelled and damaged waterstop.
  132.         Remove unacceptable waterstop from site and dispose of
  133.         defective material in accordance with local regulations.
  134.  
  135.     C.  Adhere waterstop to concrete utilizing primer adhesive.
  136.  
  137.     D.  Allow primer adhesive to dry for two hours prior to
  138.         application of waterstop.
  139.  
  140.     E.  Apply waterstop the same day as adhesive.

  142.     F.  Protect waterstop from moisture, dirt, oil, and sunlight
  143.         during progress of work.
  144.  
  145.     G.  Install waterstop with minimum 2 inches (50 mm) clear
  146.         cover to concrete face.
