  1. DISCAT V2.0 - DEMO Release
  2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  3. Because of the low response I have had with the shareware version of this
  4. product I have decided to only release a demo copy to the general public, and
  5. then give the working copy to people who register.  The working copy of
  6. DISCAT V2.0 is copyrighted, and may only be used by the registered user.
  7. Copying is only allowed for backup purposes.

  9. New Features and Changes from V1.3
  10. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  11. 1.  The cursor does not always home when moving away from the current page in
  12.     the editing mode.  Provides a much better feel when editing entries.
  13.  
  14. 2.  A search command has been added to the edit mode.  By pressing F8, the
  15.     user can input a filename, and DISCAT will search from the current position
  16.     for the file.  If it is found the cursor will be placed at that entry.
  17.  
  18. 3.  Fixed bug with printing labels.  Versions 1.3 and 1.0 would not print
  19.     labels for disk numbers greater than 127.
  20.  
  21. 4.  DISCAT will now warn the user if there are no entries on a disk that they
  22.     are trying to print a label for.  It displays a message saying that there
  23.     are no entries for that disk, waits for the user to press a key, and then
  24.     goes on to print any other labels that were to be printed.

  26. 5.  A new function has been added to the editing menu to delete an entire disk
  27.     from the catalog.  It will display the number of entries deleted at the
  28.     end of deleting the disk.

  30. 6.  Streamlined reading from the disks by making the drive specification only
  31.     one key.  In order to read from drive B: all the user has to do is hit B
  32.     instead of hitting B and Return.

  34. 7.  The biggest improvement with 2.0 is the file saving format.  With the
  35.     older format (.CAT extentions) the file was wasting almost as much space
  36.     as it was using.  (This was because it would allocate space for empty
  37.     descriptions)  If you have very large descriptions on all entries, then
  38.     the savings will not be noticed, but if you have very few large
  39.     descriptions, you will notice a very large difference in the size of the
  40.     .DCA file and the .CAT file.  In any event there will be a noticeable
  41.     difference in the size of the two different file types.

  43.     There is a menu item to read the old .CAT file extention, but not to 
  44.     write it.  This will allow you to read any files from the older versions
  45.     of DISCAT.

  54.      (That is what everybody tells me, I am not trying to tell you.)

  56. I am currently working on a newer version of DISCAT that will not be out for a
  57. while.  I want to take time to add some of the more complex features that
  58. people have been asking for, and will hopefully have a very complete disk 
  59. cataloging system available by the end of 1987.  One of the long awaited
  60. functions, the ability to update a disk, will be implimented in the next
  61. version.

  63. I am hoping that people will register their copies of DISCAT V2.0 in larger
  64. quantities than in the past, but in the event that they don't, I will still
  65. be suporting the product.  I will however make the ST a secondary market for
  66. my software.  I am going to be converting this disk cataloger over to the IBM
  67. because of the serious need for a disk cataloger over there.  If anyone is
  68. interested in a version of DISCAT for the IBM, please drop me a line and I will
  69. place you on a mailing list that I am creating for IBM people.

  71. DISCAT V2.0 is copyrighted, and only the DEMO copy may be distributed.  I
  72. encourage, and ask, that the DEMO copy be distributed.

  74. Please register your copy if you like this product, or have enjoyed DISCAT's
  75. ease of use and power in the past.  I have spent many hours of work on this
  76. project, and my average pay per hour is not even worth mentioning.  (Way
  77. below minimum wage)
