  1. Using Adobe Type Manager with Aldus PageMaker
  2.  
  3. I've been seeing the same questions and problems repeated 
  4. over and over on various Compuserve forums, so I've put 
  5. together a Q&A sheet for ATM and Pagemaker.
  6.  
  7. First off, ATM only works with Type 1 PostScript fonts. 
  8. These font files usually have a PFB (Printer Font Binary) 
  9. extension. ATM does not work with Type 3 PostScript fonts 
  10. (which usually have a PFA extension). Installing an 
  11. incompatible font can wreak havoc on your work. 
  12. Unfortunately, the ATM font installation does not check to 
  13. see if a font is compatible or not.
  14.  
  15. Now for the questions:
  16.  
  17. Q. I've installed Adobe Type1 fonts through the ATM 
  18. Control Panel. They show up fine on the screen and are 
  19. listed in PageMaker's typeface list, but I only get 
  20. Courier from the printer. What's wrong?
  21.  
  22. A. ATM's Control Panel installs the font into the ATM.INI 
  23. and the WIN.INI files. However, it enters the font 
  24. information in the WIN.INI as a RESIDENT FONT (that is, a 
  25. font in ROM, already downloaded to the printer's RAM, or 
  26. installed on the printer's hard drive). You will need to 
  27. make a backup of your WIN.INI file, and then edit the 
  28. WIN.INI file to mark the font as NON-RESIDENT so that 
  29. Windows will download the font to the printer when it is 
  30. needed.

  32. After making a backup of the WIN.INI file, open the file 
  33. up for editing in an ASCII editor (Notepad or Sysedit will 
  34. work fine). Look for a section that is headed:

  36. [PostScript,LPT1]
  37.  
  38. (Note: the printer port might be different, i.e. COM2, 
  39. LPT2, COM1, FILE)
  40.  
  41. Under that heading look for lines like these:
  42.  
  43. softfont1=c:\psfonts\pfm\fontname.PFM
  44. softfont2=c:\psfonts\pfm\fontnam2.PFM
  45.   etc.
  46.  
  47. These are the lines tell Windows what fonts are available, 
  48. and where to find the spacing information for them. As 
  49. they appear, they make Windows assume that the fonts are 
  50. resident in the printer. You need to add the path to the 
  51. PFB files to the above lines to make Windows download the 
  52. fonts:

  55. softfont1=c:\psfonts\pfm\fontname.PFM,c:\psfonts\fontname.
  56. PFB
  57. softfont2=c:\psfonts\pfm\fontnam2.PFM,c:\psfonts\fontnam2.
  58. PFB
  59.   etc.

  61. Notice the comma and the path to the PFB file. The above 
  62. assumes that the fonts are in the default directories for 
  63. ATM. If you are using different directories you will need 
  64. to substitute them for the C:\PSFONTS\PFM and the 
  65. C:\PSFONTS directories.

  69. Q. I've installed my PostScript fonts through ATM's 
  70. Control Panel, but they do not appear in PageMaker's 
  71. typeface list, and I don't even see the fonts listed in 
  72. the WIN.INI file.

  74. A. Are you using one of the standard printer ports (LPT1, 
  75. COM2, LPT1.OS2, etc.)? Or are you possibly printing to 
  76. LPT1.PRN instead?  ATM is aware of the standard printer 
  77. ports in Windows, but is not aware of LPT1.PRN or 
  78. LPT2.PRN. If it encounters the PRN ports it does not make 
  79. any modification to the WIN.INI file.

  81. There are a couple of ways to fix this, neither of which 
  82. is very pretty. You can use Windows' Control Panel, 
  83. Printer Setup to change printer ports to a standard port 
  84. and then re-install the fonts. Or, you can manually edit 
  85. the win.ini file to enter the font information.

  87. If you choose to manually enter the information, please 
  88. take a look at the FONTS.ZIP file in the Compuserve 
  89. Desktop Publishing Forum (GO DTPFORUM) for information.

  93. Q. I've installed my PostScript fonts through ATM's 
  94. Control Panel. The fonts show up in PageMaker's list of 
  95. typefaces, and they print fine. However, only small size 
  96. screen fonts seem to appear in Pagemaker. If I use a large 
  97. font, or I zoom in on the page I only see small figures.

  99. A. PageMaker assumes that you only have a limited 
  100. selection of screen font sizes. You need to make a change 
  101. to the Preferences settings in the Edit menu in Pagemaker.
  102.  
  103. In order for the changes you make to become the default 
  104. settings in Pagemaker, you need to close any document you 
  105. may be working on so that you are at a blank gray screen. 
  106. Then click on Edit and then click on Preferences. Change 
  107. the values for "Stretch text above" and "Vector text 
  108. above."  I have them each set at 400 pixels. Then click on 
  109. OK.

  111. This will set these values as the defaults for new 
  112. documents. You will need to go back and change them for 
  113. any old documents that you want to use with ATM.

  117. Q. Are there any public domain or shareware PS Type1 fonts 
  118. that will work with ATM and Pagemaker?
  119.  
  120. A. Yes. There are a few examples in Library 9 of the 
  121. DTPFORUM on Compuserve (check the file's description for 
  122. mention of ATM compatibility). Examples are Saint Frances, 
  123. Architect, Black Chancery, Postcrypt and Caligula.
