  11. IMPORTANT NOTE: This document contains the latest game installation
  12. information and Customer Support info. It should answer many of your
  13. TEN- and game-related questions. Please read this document in its
  14. entirety before calling our Customer Service department. Thanks!

  17. you must make sure that the Windows taskbar is in "Auto hide"
  18. mode. (To make this adjustment, select Start --> Settings -->

  41.     If you're reading this, something's probably wrong. Because if
  42.     you're reading this, then you're not playing multiplayer games
  43.     over the Internet through TEN. And if you're not on TEN, you're
  44.     not happy, we're not happy, and the sows will require a painful
  45.     series of out-patient operations.
  46.  
  47.     In this document, we'll do our best to get you back on track
  48.     and in the gaming Arenas. Here you'll find basic installation
  49.     and sign on information, and contact info for our happy
  50.     Customer Service elves. There are other sources of help and
  51.     information as well. There's an up-to-the-minute list of
  52.     Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the Web at
  53.     www2.ten.net/support. There's a TEN Help file accessible from
  54.     within TEN (go to the Support menu and choose "Help Topics").
  55.     TEN employees appear on line from time to time (they have the
  56.     word "TEN" in front of their name) and there are the TEN
  57.     volunteer staff of TENguides (they have the word "Guide" in
  58.     front of their name) to provide assistance. And, again, there
  59.     are TEN Customer Service people who get no greater pleasure
  60.     in life than in helping you out.

  63. 1.0  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  64.  
  65.       To play on the Total Entertainment Network, you must have the
  66.     following minimum system setup:
  67.  
  68.     - 486DX 66MHz
  69.     - Windows 95

  71.     - 14.4 modem or better (or direct Internet connection)

  73.        Each game on TEN also has additional system requirements.
  74.     You'll notice that these requirements tend to be higher than
  75.     the requirements for the game in single-player mode due to the
  76.     fact that the TEN software and the game software must run at
  77.     the same time.

  149. 2.0  GAME INSTALLATION
  150.  
  151.     To play a game on TEN, you must either buy or download the
  152.     supported versions of that game and install the game to your
  153.     hard drive as per the game publisher's instructions. Special
  154.     installation notes for each game are listed below.
  155.  
  156.     GAMES AND GAME ENABLERS
  157.  
  158.     Occasionally, games on TEN need special software called
  159.     "game enablers" or simply "enablers." These files are
  160.     generally placed directly into the root directory of the game
  161.     they're designed for. You can grab enabler files from the File
  162.     menu by choosing "Download Files" or from any game's
  163.     DataSphere.
  164.  
  165.     If you should ever move the game's files or directories, or
  166.     install a new version of the game, you'll have to update the
  167.     path to the game's executable or enabler file. To do this, go
  168.     to the File menu and choose "Preferences...". Once there,
  169.     click the Games tab. From there, you'll need to hit the Browse
  170.     button and find the location of the game executable or game
  171.     enabler.    
  172.     
  173.     Many game files and patches are available from the File menu
  174.     by choosing "Download Files". If you can't find what you need
  175.     here, maybe it doesn't exist. Files can also be found on our
  176.     Web-based DataSpheres by clicking the DataSpheres button on
  177.     any TEN screen or from the Go menu by choosing "DataSpheres
  178.     Web Site" (and then picking a game).
  179.  
  180.     Warning! It's a really, really bad idea to install games in
  181.     the TEN directory on your hard drive (c:\Program Files\TEN).
  182.     All files under the TEN directory are subject to eradication
  183.     during a TEN upgrade.

  185.  
  186.     AD&D DARK SUN: CRIMSON SANDS
  187.  
  188.     Dark Sun: Crimson Sands is a fantasy role-playing game set in
  189.     TSR's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons world of Dark Sun. This game
  190.     is a TEN-only exclusive. You can purchase the game at your
  191.     local software store (you'll get some extra nifty stuff in the
  192.     package) or you can download the latest version from either the
  193.     File menu by choosing "Download Files" or from the Dark
  194.     Sun DataSphere. Watch out, it's HUGE and can take a lot of
  195.     time to download, especially if you have a 14.4 modem.
  196.  
  197.     The first time you play Dark Sun, you'll be asked to locate the
  198.     MDARK.EXE file in your Dark Sun directory.
  199.  
  200.     BLOOD (retail version)
  201.  
  202.     In order to play the retail version of Blood on TEN, you'll
  203.     need the latest retail version installed on your hard drive.
  204.     (You can purchase Blood retail at your favorite software
  205.     store.) You can download a patch to the latest version from
  206.     either the File menu by choosing "Download Files" or from the
  207.     Blood DataSphere.
  208.  
  209.     The first time you play the retail version of Blood, you'll be
  210.     asked to locate the BLOOD.EXE file in your retail Blood
  211.     directory.
  212.  
  213.     BLOOD (shareware version)
  214.  
  215.     To play shareware Blood on TEN, you'll need the latest
  216.     shareware version installed on your hard drive. You can
  217.     download shareware Blood from either the File menu by choosing
  218.     "Download Files" or from the Blood DataSphere.
  219.  
  220.     The first time you play the shareware version of Blood, you'll
  221.     be asked to locate the BLOOD.EXE file in your shareware Blood
  222.     directory.
  223.  
  224.     COMMAND & CONQUER
  225.  
  226.     First off, you must have the retail version of Command &
  227.     Conquer already installed on your hard drive. You'll also need
  228.     to download the Command & Conquer game enabler file CCRUNME.EXE
  229.     (this is the compressed form to save space) from either the
  230.     File menu by choosing "Download Files" or from the Command &
  231.     Conquer DataSphere. Once downloaded and extracted, place the
  232.     CCTEN.EXE enabler in your Command & Conquer directory.
  233.     Remember, you'll also need to have a Command & Conquer CD in
  234.     your CD-ROM drive. After that, you can hit the ground running.
  235.  
  236.     The first time you play Command & Conquer, you'll be asked to
  237.     locate the CCTEN.EXE game enabler in your Command & Conquer
  238.     directory.
  239.  
  240.     COMMAND & CONQUER: RED ALERT (Windows 95 version)
  241.  
  242.     To begin with, you must have the retail version of Command &
  243.     Conquer: Red Alert already installed on your hard drive.
  244.     You'll also need to download the Command & Conquer: Red Alert
  245.     enabler file RA95ZIP.EXE (this is the compressed form to save
  246.     space) from either the File menu by choosing "Download Files"
  247.     or from the Command & Conquer: Red Alert DataSphere. Once
  248.     downloaded and extracted, place the RA95TEN.EXE enabler in your
  249.     Red Alert directory. Additionally, you'll need to have a
  250.     Command & Conquer: Red Alert CD in your CD-ROM drive. Once you
  251.     have these things in order, you're ready to go.

  253.     The first time you play Command & Conquer: Red Alert, you'll be
  254.     asked to locate the RA95TEN.EXE game enabler in your Command &
  255.     Conquer: Red Alert directory.
  256.  
  257.     DEADLOCK
  258.  
  259.     You must first have either the demo version of the full retail
  260.     version 1.31 of Deadlock installed on your hard drive. Download
  261.     the demo version from either the File menu by choosing
  262.     "Download Files" or from the Deadlock DataSphere. The full
  263.     retail version of Deadlock is available at your local software
  264.     store.
  265.  
  266.     The first time you play Deadlock, you'll be asked to locate the
  267.     DEADLOCK.EXE file in your Deadlock directory.
  268.  
  269.     DIABLO
  270.  
  271.     First off, you need to have the retail version of Diablo
  272.     installed on your hard drive and ready to go. Next, be sure you
  273.     have the DirectX 3 drivers installed on your machine. Once these
  274.     two are set, you'll need to download the Diablo enabler file
  275.     DIABTZIP.EXE (this is the compressed form to save space) from
  276.     either the File menu by choosing "Download Files" or from the
  277.     Diablo DataSphere. Once downloaded, double-click this file
  278.     to extract THREE files (DIABLUI10.DLL, TEN.SNP and DIABLO10.EXE) to
  279.     your Diablo directory (if your Diablo directory isn't c:\diablo,
  280.     you'll need to change the destination path).
  281.  
  282.     The first time you play Diablo, you'll be asked to locate the
  283.     DIABLO10.EXE game enabler in your Diablo directory.
  284.  
  285.     DUKE NUKEM 3D ATOMIC EDITION (Plutonium Pak)
  286.  
  287.     Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition is an enhanced version of regular
  288.     Duke with a new weapon, new levels and some new baddies.
  289.     (The Plutonium Pak is an upgrade to original Duke Nukem 3D that
  290.     converts the original Duke Nukem 3D to the Atomic Edition.) To
  291.     play in the Duke Plutonium/Atomic Arenas on TEN, you'll need to
  292.     purchase either the Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition or the
  293.     original Duke Nukem 3D *PLUS* the Duke Nukem 3D: Plutonium Pak.
  294.     You'll then need to install either Atomic or Original Duke +
  295.     Plutonium to your hard drive.
  296.  
  297.     NOTE: Duke Atomic and original Duke are incompatible with each
  298.     other. You'll need two separate installations of Duke Atomic and
  299.     original Duke if you want to play in both the Plutonium/Atomic
  300.     Arenas and the Retail or Shareware Arenas.
  301.  
  302.     Make sure you have the latest version of Duke Plutonium or Duke
  303.     Atomic installed on your hard drive. A patch to the latest
  304.     version is available from either the File menu by choosing
  305.     "Download Files..." or from the Duke Nukem DataSphere.
  306.  
  307.     The first time you play Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition/Plutonium
  308.     Pak, you'll be asked to locate the DUKE3D.EXE file in your
  309.     Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition/Plutonium Pak directory. You'll
  310.     need to have the Atomic/Plutonium CD in your CD-ROM drive while
  311.     you play.
  312.  
  313.     DUKE NUKEM 3D (shareware version)
  314.  
  315.     To play the shareware version of Duke Nukem 3D on TEN, you must
  316.     have the latest shareware version installed on your hard drive.
  317.     You can find shareware Duke by going from either the File menu
  318.     by choosing "Download Files" or from the Duke Nukem 3D
  319.     DataSphere. After you download the self-extracting archive,
  320.     double-click it to extract the game to your hard drive. You'll
  321.     need to run the SETUP.EXE program to configure the sound and
  322.     control options. Make sure to turn music OFF.
  323.  
  324.     The first time you play Duke Nukem 3D shareware, you'll be
  325.     asked to locate the DUKE3D.EXE file in your Duke Nukem 3D
  326.     shareware directory.
  327.  
  328.     DUKE NUKEM 3D (retail version)
  329.  
  330.     You'll need the full retail version of Duke Nukem 3D installed
  331.     on your hard drive if you want to play it on TEN. You can buy
  332.     the retail version at your favorite software store.
  333.  
  334.     The first time you play Duke Nukem 3D, you'll be asked to
  335.     locate the DUKE3D.EXE file in your Duke Nukem 3D directory.
  336.  
  337.     EF2000 V2.0
  338.  
  339.     Hoo boy, this game is Sierra Hotel! To play EF2000 V2.0 on TEN,
  340.     you'll first need the game installed on your hard drive. You'll
  341.     also have to have the DirectX 3.0 drivers installed on your
  342.     computer Then, you'll have to download the EF2000 V2.0 game
  343.     enabler file EFTZIP.EXE (this is the compressed form to save
  344.     space) from either the File menu by choosing "Download
  345.     Files... " or from the EF2000 V2.0 DataSphere. Once downloaded
  346.     and extracted, make sure the EFTEN.EXE enabler is in your
  347.     EF2000 V2.0 directory.    
  348.  
  349.     The first time you play EF2000 V2.0, you'll be asked to locate
  350.     the EFTEN.EXE game enabler in your EF2000 V2.0 directory.
  351.  
  352.     MASTER OF ORION II
  353.  
  354.     In order to play Master of Orion II on TEN, you'll need to have
  355.     the latest version of the game installed on your hard drive and
  356.     the MOO II CD in your CD-ROM drive. You can buy Master of
  357.     Orion II at your local software retailer. Once the game is
  358.     ready to go, you'll also need to have the DirectX 2 or
  359.     DirectX 3 drivers installed on your computer.
  360.  
  361.     The first time you play Master of Orion II, you'll be asked to
  362.     locate the ORION95.EXE file in your Master of Orion II
  363.     directory.
  364.  
  365.     PANZER GENERAL ONLINE
  366.  
  367.     You can download a TEN-only verison of Panzer General Online
  368.     by going from either the File menu by choosing "Download Files"
  369.     or from the Panzer General DataSphere. If you don't have the
  370.     DirectX 2 or DirectX 3 drivers, you'll need to download those
  371.     as well. Don't forget the Panzer General manual if you don't
  372.     have the Official one from the retail game. The manual is in
  373.     Adobe Acrobat PDF format, and comes with an Acrobat reader.
  374.  
  375.     The first time you play Panzer General Online, you'll be asked
  376.     to locate the PANZER.EXE file in your Panzer General Online
  377.     directory.
  378.  
  379.     QUAKE
  380.  
  381.     To play Quake on TEN, you must first install either the
  382.     shareware or retail version of the game to your hard drive.
  383.     You can download the shareware version from either the File
  384.     menu by choosing "Download Files" or from the Quake DataSphere.
  385.     The retail version of the game allows you to play all four
  386.     episodes. If you don't have the retail version, you can
  387.     purchase it at your favorite software store. (Shareware and
  388.     full retail folks can play in the same game, as long as they
  389.     play in Episode 1 levels.)
  390.  
  391.     You'll also need to download the Quake enabler file QTENZIP.EXE
  392.     (this is the compressed    form to save space) from either the
  393.     File menu by choosing "Download Files" or from the Quake
  394.     DataSphere. Once downloaded and extracted, place the
  395.     QUAKETEN.EXE file in your Quake directory.
  396.  
  397.     The first time you play Quake, you'll be asked to locate the
  398.     QUAKETEN.EXE game enabler in your Quake directory.
  399.  
  400.     SHADOW WARRIOR (shareware version)
  401.  
  402.     To play shareware Shadow Warrior on TEN, you'll first need the
  403.     shareware version installed on your hard drive. You'll also
  404.     have to download the Shadow Warrior shareware game enabler file
  405.     SWTZIP.EXE (this is the compressed form to save space) from
  406.     either the File menu by choosing "Download Files... " or from
  407.     the Shadow Warrior DataSphere. Once downloaded and extracted,
  408.     make sure the SWTEN.EXE enabler is in your shareware Shadow
  409.     Warrior directory.
  410.     
  411.     The first time you play the shareware version of Shadow
  412.     Warrior, you'll be asked to locate the SWTEN.EXE game enabler
  413.     in your Shadow Warrior shareware directory.
  414.  
  415.     WARCRAFT
  416.  
  417.     While you don't need to buy a retail version of Warcraft, you
  418.     MUST download a special TEN version to play the game on TEN.
  419.     The TEN-only version of Warcraft can be downloaded from either
  420.     the File menu by choosing "Download Files" or from the Warcraft
  421.     DataSphere.
  422.  
  423.     After you've downloaded the self-extracting archive, double-
  424.     click it to extract the game to your hard drive. You'll need to
  425.     run the SETUP.EXE program to configure the sound and control
  426.     options.
  427.  
  428.     The first time you play Warcraft, you'll be asked to locate the
  429.     WAR.EXE file in your Warcraft directory.
  430.  
  431.  
  432. 3.0  CONNECTING TO TEN
  433.  
  434.        Once you've installed the TEN software, you can launch TEN in
  435.     two ways: You can 1) select the TEN icon (TEN.exe) located in
  436.     the TEN directory on your hard drive. The default location for
  437.     the TEN files is C:\PROGRAM FILES\TEN. Or 2) you can launch
  438.     TEN by selecting the TEN icon in your Windows 95 START menu
  439.     (usually in the lower left corner of your screen). The default
  440.     path in the START menu is Start-->Programs-->TEN.
  441.  
  442.     Once the TEN software has been launched, you will see the TEN
  443.     registration screen. Select the NEW USER button to register for
  444.     a new TEN account. When registering, you will need to provide
  445.     Name and Address information, and a valid credit card number.
  446.     After you have created an account, you will be taken to the
  447.     sign on screen.
  448.  
  449.     If you have any problems connecting to TEN, you can contact the
  450.     friendly TEN Customer Service elves for help. See the end of
  451.     this file for TEN's Customer Service contact information.
  452.  
  453.     If you have questions about TEN once you've signed on to the
  454.     service, you can access the TEN online Help file by going to
  455.     the Support menu and choosing "Help Topics". The Help file can
  456.     also be viewed off-line by clicking on the "ten" help icon in
  457.     the TEN directory (the icon looks like a purple book). You can
  458.     also hit the "?" on any TEN screen and then click on a portion
  459.     of the screen or dialog box to see instant help on that part of
  460.     TEN.
  461.  
  462.     And if you ever need to uninstall the TEN software, be sure to
  463.     go to Start-->Programs-->TEN-->Remove TEN. When a confirmation
  464.     dialog box appears, click Yes. This way, you'll clear the 
  465.     registry of all gobbledygook and allow your computer to compute
  466.     happily away.
  467.  
  468.  
  469. 4.0  SELECTING A CONNECTION METHOD
  470.  
  471.     There are three ways to access the TEN service: 1) a TEN local
  472.     access number, 2) an Internet connection provide by an Internet
  473.     Service Provider (ISP), 3) or a direct connection to the
  474.     Internet via your office or school.
  475.  
  476.     TEN LOCAL ACCESS NUMBER:
  477.  
  478.     If you do not already have access to the Internet through an 
  479.     ISP, you can use your modem to call one of our local access
  480.     numbers (provided by Concentric Network). TEN has local access
  481.     numbers spread across North America, so it's likely there is
  482.     an access number near you.
  483.  
  484.     To use one of these numbers, install TEN, run the TEN software,
  485.     and select the SETTINGS button from the sign on screen. Next,
  486.     select the "Select one of TEN's local access numbers" option,
  487.     click "OK," and then choose the local access number nearest
  488.     you. (Note: Selecting this option will incur an additional
  489.     hourly charge. Also, toll charges will apply if the number is
  490.     long distance for you.)
  491.  
  492.     YOUR OWN INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER:
  493.  
  494.     An alternate way to access TEN is through your own Internet
  495.     Service Provider (ISP). You do this by 1) logging on to your
  496.     ISP, 2) running the TEN software, 3) selecting the SETTINGS
  497.     button on the TEN sign on screen, and 4) choosing the "Use my
  498.     direct Internet connection" option. (TEN supports the Windows
  499.     95 32-bit Winsock. If your ISP doesn't support Winsock32, you
  500.     may need to take additional steps to connect to TEN.)
  501.  
  502.     If you use your own ISP, pay careful attention to what Mr.
  503.     Bandwidth (the funny looking guy on the Arena screen) has to
  504.     say about your connection quality. Some ISPs do not provide a
  505.     good enough connection to play fast-action games like Duke
  506.     Nukem 3D over the Internet. If Mr. Bandwidth says that your
  507.     connection is not up to snuff, you'll want to try signing on
  508.     through one of TEN's local access numbers. (Note that you
  509.     can still play games like Deadlock and Warcraft with slower
  510.     connections.)
  511.  
  512.     DIRECT CONNECTION AT THE OFFICE OR SCHOOL
  513.  
  514.     Another way to access TEN is through a direct connection to the
  515.     Internet provided by your office or school. Simply run the TEN
  516.     software and choose "Use my direct Internet connection" after
  517.     clicking the SETTINGS button on the sign on screen. This option
  518.     is only available when your boss isn't looking or you've
  519.     finished all your Calculus homework.
