  5.           The main  reason that I originally  wrote Z-Ray (as
  6. in  Zip X-Ray)  is the   following: I  have a  shareware file
  7. management  program called  Directory Freedom  which is small
  8. and  fast  in  spite  of  having  more wonderful and exciting
  9. features than I could possibly  describe here (Plug #1). Yet,
  10. there was still one thing which I continually ended up having
  11. to exit  DF to do  -- namely, to  view the contents  of files
  12. contained within ZIP files.

  14.           I looked high  and low for a program  which I could
  15. call with  DF's nifty user-defined shell  function (Plug #2),
  16. but  nothing  did  exactly  what  I  needed.  So out came the
  17. assembler and, a week or so later, out popped ZR.
  18.  
  19.           As time passed, I also wanted  to be able to do the
  20. same thing with other archive formats I sometimes used -- ARJ
  21. and Lharc.  So, taking Z-Ray  as a base,  I wrote AR  and LR.
  22. These  latter  two  programs  do  work  a  little differently
  23. (inside)  from ZR  -- see  the Technical  notes --  but these
  24. differences should generally be invisible to the user.

  26.           So.... armed with these viewers, DF can now perform
  27. most of  the major archiving  and de-archiving functions  for
  28. the major  formats used on  PC's. (DF 4.0  and later has  the
  29. capability to  archive files.) For  the fancy stuff  (such as
  30. selective archive updates), you'll  still need a program like
  31. ARCMASTER  or SHEZ,  but DF  will be  able to  handle all the
  32. everyday stuff.
