  5.      CLEAN-UP (CLEAN) is a virus disinfection program for IBM
  6. PC and compatible computers. CLEAN-UP will search through the
  7. partition table, boot  sector, or files of a  PC and remove a
  8. virus specified  by the user.  In most instances  CLEAN-UP is
  9. able to repair the infected area of the system and restore it
  10. to normal usage. CLEAN-UP works  on all viruses identified by
  11. the current version of  the VIRUSCAN (SCAN) program. CLEAN-UP
  12. can  also remove  unknown viruses  from .COM  and .EXE files,
  13. partition  table,  and  boot  sector  that  have had recovery
  14. information stored for them by the VIRUSCAN program.

  16.      CLEAN-UP searches  the system looking for  the virus you
  17. wish  to remove.  When an  infected file  is found,  CLEAN-UP
  18. isolates and  removes the virus,  and in most  cases, repairs
  19. the infected file and restores it to normal operation. If the
  20. file is infected with a less common virus, CLEAN-UP will then
  21. display a warning message and prompt the user, asking whether
  22. to overwrite  and delete the  infected file. Files  erased in
  23. such a  manner are non-recoverable.  Before running CLEAN-UP,
  24. verify  the  virus  infection  with  the  VIRUSCAN (SCAN.EXE)
  25. program. SCAN will locate and  identify the virus and provide
  26. the  I.D. code  needed to  remove it.  The I.D.  is displayed
  27. inside  the square  brackets, "["  and "]."  For example, the
  28. I.D. code  for the Jerusalem virus  is displayed as "[Jeru]".
  29. This I.D. must be used with CLEAN-UP to remove the virus. The
  30. square brackets "["  and "]" MUST be included.  If SCAN finds
  31. an unknown virus  in a file that had  previously had recovery
  32. information stored  for it, it  will notify the  user that an
  33. infection has occurred. It will not, however, display an I.D.
  34. code.  NOTE: When  CLEAN is  run with  the /GENERIC option to
  35. disinfect  files  or  system  areas  based  on  the  recovery
  36. information  stored by  SCAN, no  I.D. code  should be  used.
  37. Please refer  to the VIRUSCAN  documentation for instructions
  38. in adding recovery information to your system.
