  5.        The  name  ArcMaster  is  short  for  the term Archive
  6. Master where  the word archive means  a place where documents
  7. and/or  records are  kept. In  the modern  world of  personal
  8. computing,  these  documents  and  records  are maintained in
  9. computer  files. These  files are  frequently compressed  and
  10. grouped  together  in  archive   files  by  special  computer
  11. programs such as PKZIP, ARCA, PAK, LHA, and ARJ. All of these
  12. special programs  are operated from the  DOS command line and
  13. require  the  entry  of  numerous  and  varied  command  line
  14. switches in order to maximize their utility.

  16.        ArcMaster,  hereafter known  as  AM  for short,  is an
  17. archive program interface control system. It provides a clean
  18. interface  that removes  the  burden  of remembering  all the
  19. various command  line switches and  options that may  be used
  20. with archiving  programs. In addition,  AM is a  powerful and
  21. flexible DOS  shell that provides numerous  ways in which the
  22. user can  maintain and manipulate  his/her DOS directory  and
  23. file structures.

  25.        AM may be used as  a stand-alone program in its useful
  26. role as  a DOS shell,  but in order  to manipulate compressed
  27. archive files the user must have present in his/her system at
  28. least  one  of  the  supported  archive  programs.  A list of
  29. supported compression/decompression  archive programs appears
  30. in the full documtation.
