  1. Important Tempest 2000(tm) Demo Installation Notes
  2.  
  3. IMPORTANT:
  4.  
  5. Please note three important notes before "unzipping" the file that
  6. accompanies this READ_ME.1ST file:
  7.  
  8.  1) If using Windows '95... Tempest 2000(tm) demo will run in a
  9.     Windows '95 DOS window without sound support OR in MS-DOS mode
  10.     with sound support. See your Windows '95 Help file or
  11.     documentation for information regarding rebooting the computer in
  12.     MS-DOS mode.
  13.  
  14.  2) "UnZip" TEMPEST.ZIP with the following command:
  15.  
  16.     PKUNZIP -d TEMPEST.ZIP
  17.  
  18.     The "-d" switch will instruct the decompression process to create
  19.     the necessary directories for Tempest 2000 demo to work properly.
  20.     It is a good idea to perform this function in a new directory so
  21.     that the new files do not mix with files you already have on your
  22.     system. PKZIP is a required application to decompress this
  23.     software. It is available in the libraries of major on-line
  24.     services or through service orientated computer dealers.
  25.  
  26.  3) Tempest 2000 demo will create files on your system. Proper
  27.     installation may require changes to system files as described
  28.     below in this document. If you are at all uncomfortable with the
  29.     changes advised, DO NOT MAKE THEM. Please seek the assistance of
  30.     someone knowledgeable with computers before changing system files.
  31.     This demo is offered "as is" with no implied warranties of any
  32.     kind.
  33.  
  34. The following installation tips were designed to help you successfully
  35. install Tempest 2000 demo on your IBM(tm) PC or 100% compatible
  36. computer. Please consult this guide prior to installation.
  37.  
  38. System Requirements
  39. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  40. To run Tempest 2000 your system must meet the following minimum
  41. requirements:
  42.  
  43.       Computer: 386DX-40 or higher IBM-PC or 100% compatible system
  44.  
  45.             OS: MS-DOS(tm) 5.0 or higher
  46.  
  47.         Memory: 2 MB RAM with 550K free conventional memory and
  48.                 256K free EMS
  49.  
  50.     Hard Drive: 2 MB hard drive space
  51.  
  52.     Video Card: VGA
  53.  
  54.         CD-ROM: Required (any speed) for actual product.
  55.                 (Not required for demo)
  56.  
  57.  Digital Sound: SoundBlaster(tm), AdLib(tm), or 100% compatible
  58.  
  59.          Music: SoundBlaster(tm), AdLib(tm), or 100% compatible,
  60.                 Roland(tm) Sound Canvas, or Gravis Ultrasound
  61.                 Support(tm)
  62.  
  63.   Input Device: Joystick or Gravis Gamepad« (recommended)
  64.                 or Keyboard
  65.  
  66.        Network: Two-player Tempest Duel and Tempest Plus play requires
  67.                 a second PC with the same system requirements, one
  68.                 available serial port on each machine, a null modem
  69.                 cable (or modem cable with null modem adapter), and an
  70.                 additional copy of Tempest 2000.
  71.                 (Network functions not fully implemented in Demo)
  72.  
  73. Freeing Up Enough System RAM
  74. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  75. Tempest 2000 demo requires 550k of conventional system memory. In
  76. addition, a memory manager (such as EMM386) must be present with EMS
  77. enabled and 256k of EMS memory free.
  78.  
  79. To determine how much memory is available type:
  80.  
  81.  MEM <followed by the Enter key at the DOS prompt>
  82.  
  83. The amount of free conventional memory is stated as "Largest 
  84. executable program size." The number which follows "Free expanded 
  85. (EMS)" is the amount of EMS memory available for programs. If "Free 
  86. expanded (EMS)" does not appear, EMS memory needs to be enabled (see 
  87. Troubleshooting : Enabling EMS Memory below) before Tempest 2000 will 
  88. run. If not enough conventional or EMS memory is available, you must 
  89. reconfigure your system to make enough memory available prior to 
  90. running Tempest 2000. MS-DOS 6.0 and above users can use a utility 
  91. called "MEMMAKER.EXE".
  92.  
  93. Novice users should make a boot disk (see Troubleshooting : Making a 
  94. Boot Disk). If you already have enough memory, you're ready to begin 
  95. installation. Installing Tempest 2000 Tempest 2000 can be installed to 
  96. run directly from your hard disk drive or from the CD. Installing 
  97. Tempest 2000 to run from the hard disk requires more drive space (2 
  98. MB) but will allow the game to load faster. To begin installation, 
  99. follow these steps:
  100.  
  101.   1. If you are currently running Windows(tm), exit Windows to return
  102.      to the MS-DOS prompt.
  103.  
  104.   2. Change to the CD drive by typing the CD drive's letter
  105.      with a colon and hit return. For instance, if your CD is drive
  106.      "D", type D: followed by the Enter key.
  107.  
  108.   3. Type INSTALL followed by the Enter key.
  109.  
  110.   4. Follow the installation program's instructions on installing the
  111.      game. Playing Tempest 2000 To start Tempest 2000, change to the
  112.      installation drive and directory and type TEMPEST followed by the
  113.      Enter key. For example if you installed Tempest 2000 to
  114.      C:\TEMPEST, start the game with the following sequence of
  115.      commands: C: CD TEMPEST TEMPEST
  116.  
  117. Troubleshooting
  118. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  119. Editing System Files
  120. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  121. Before making any changes to CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, we strongly
  122. recommend making backup copies to prevent accidental alterations that
  123. may prevent your system from functioning properly.  The following
  124. commands will make a backup copy of these system files:
  125.  
  126.  COPY CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.BAK
  127.  COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.BAK
  128.  
  129. To review or edit a system file, you can use the DOS editor EDIT.COM.
  130. For example to edit the CONFIG.SYS file, change to the directory
  131. containing CONFIG.SYS and type the following:
  132.  
  133.  EDIT CONFIG.SYS
  134.  
  135. If after making changes to your system files your computer stops
  136. behaving properly, you can restore your files by typing the following
  137. (answer "yes" when prompted to overwrite the other files):
  138.  
  139.  COPY CONFIG.BAK CONFIG.SYS
  140.  COPY AUTOEXEC.BAK AUTOEXEC.BAT
  141.  
  142. Enabling EMS Memory
  143. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  144. Tempest 2000 requires EMS memory to be enabled and at least 256K of
  145. EMS memory to be free. EMS memory is typically provided by the device
  146. driver EMM386.EXE which comes with most DOS packages and is typically
  147. located in C:\DOS (or wherever your DOS files are kept). If you are
  148. using a third party memory manager such as QEMM you will need to
  149. consult their userÆs manual for instructions on enabling EMS memory.
  150. To enable EMS memory on a typical system using EMM386, the following
  151. line should appear in your CONFIG.SYS file:
  152.  
  153.   DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
  154.   RAM AUTO
  155.  
  156. In particular, the keyword "NOEMS" must not appear after EMM386.EXE.
  157.  
  158. Making a Boot Disk
  159. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  160. If you are unable to free up enough memory to run Tempest 2000 or you
  161. run into other problems, try creating a boot disk using the following steps:
  162.  
  163.  1. Insert a blank floppy disk into drive æA:Æ (all data on this disk
  164.     will be lost).
  165.  
  166.  2. Type the following to format a new system disk (hit return when
  167.     asked for a volume label):
  168.  
  169.     FORMAT A: /S
  170.  
  171.  3. Change to drive A: by typing the following:
  172.  
  173.     A:
  174.  
  175.  4. Create a CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT file as shown below.
  176.  
  177.     CONFIG.SYS
  178.     To create and edit a new CONFIG.SYS file type the following
  179.     command:
  180.  
  181.     EDIT CONFIG.SYS
  182.  
  183.     Use the editor to create CONFIG.SYS with the following entries:
  184.  
  185.     DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
  186.     DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM AUTO
  187.     DOS=HIGH,UMB
  188.     FILES=30
  189.     BUFFERS=30
  190.     DEVICEHIGH=[your CD-ROM driver(s)]
  191.     DEVICEHIGH=[your sound-card driver (if required)]
  192.  
  193.     Please note that the section in italics should not be typed
  194.     literally but replaced with the appropriate drivers for your
  195.     CD-ROM drive and sound card (as required). You can usually copy
  196.     the appropriate lines from your existing CONFIG.SYS. If your
  197.     CD-ROM drive is connected to a SCSI host adapter, you may also
  198.     need to include a device driver for this adapter. Refer to your
  199.     host adapterÆs manual for details.  When your CONFIG.SYS file is
  200.     complete, choose "Save" from the "File" menu to save it to drive
  201.     "A:".  AUTOEXEC.BAT To create and edit a new AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  202.     type the following command:
  203.  
  204.     EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT
  205.  
  206.     Use the editor to create AUTOEXEC.BAT with the following entries:
  207.  
  208.     PROMPT $P$G
  209.     PATH=C:\DOS;C:\
  210.     [Any sound card initialization programs]
  211.     LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /V /M:20
  212.     C:
  213.     CD \TEMPEST
  214.  
  215.     Please note that the parameter "MSCD001" which follows the switch
  216.     "/D:" must exactly match the one specified by the CD-ROM driver in
  217.     your original CONFIG.SYS. If any sound card initialization
  218.     programs are required they can probably be copied from your
  219.     original AUTOEXEC.BAT. The last two lines shown above change the
  220.     current drive and directory to "C:\TEMPEST". If you installed
  221.     Tempest 2000 to a different drive or directory, change those two
  222.     lines to reflect the appropriate location.  When your CONFIG.SYS
  223.     file is complete, choose "Save" from the "File" menu to save it
  224.     to drive "A:". Sample Configuration The following is a sample
  225.     configuration for a SoundBlaster(tm) 16 configured for Port 220,
  226.     IRQ 5, DMA 1:

  246. Using the Boot Disk
  247. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  248. After successfully creating a boot disk using the steps above, reboot 
  249. your computer with the disk inserted. After your system has fully 
  250. started and you are in the appropriate directory, type TEMPEST and 
  251. press Enter to start the game.
  252.  
  253. Sound Difficulties
  254. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  255. If you are having problems with digitized sound or music, ensure that 
  256. you have compatible hardware, all proper drivers are installed, and 
  257. that the install program has matching values for IRQ, Port, and DMA 
  258. Channel.  The following sound cards are known not to work correctly 
  259. with Tempest 2000:
  260.  
  261.   Media Magic(tm) 16
  262.   Viva Maestro(tm)
  263.   Diamond Sonic Sound(tm) II
  264.   Oak Mozart(tm) 16
  265.   Microsoft Sound System(tm)
  266.  
  267. If you own one of these sound cards or are having trouble with
  268. another, check with the manufacturer to ensure that you are running
  269. with the latest drivers. Usage with Microsoft Windows(tm) 95 Tempest
  270. 2000 was designed prior to the release of Windows 95. For this reason,
  271. some game functions may not work properly while running on a system
  272. with Windows 95.

  274. We recommend exiting to Windows 95 DOS mode prior to starting Tempest
  275. 2000 under Windows 95. If your CD-ROM and/or sound card drivers are
  276. not loaded by your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files at boot time, but
  277. instead are provided by Windows 95, you will need to configure the
  278. program properties of TEMPEST.EXE to load the appropriate drivers.
  279. Consult your Windows 95 manual and online help for further
  280. instructions.

  282. When All Else Fails
  283. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  284. Most game installation problems are caused by improper configuration
  285. or out-of-date drivers. Before giving up, be sure that you have read
  286. all of the information on this card and consulted your hardware
  287. manuals thoroughly. If you have frequent problems with other software
  288. as well, it is likely that these problems are related to the hardware
  289. and/or device drivers provided by third-party manufacturers. You
  290. should contact the hardware manufacturer in this instance.
  291.  
  292. If, after making all reasonable attempts to run this software as a
  293. demo it does not boot properly, solicit the assistance of a
  294. knowledgeable user.
