  1. PART 1: CRUMPETS
  2.  
  3.   One bright Thursday morning,
  4. Hedrick went out to his letter
  5. box. Of course, he didn't ex-
  6. pect to have gotten anything;
  7. who would send mail to a
  8. hedgehog?
  9.   When he opened the box, how-
  10. ever, he had a feeling that
  11. there was something in there
  12. for him. That feeling might
  13. have come from the shiny,
  14. white envelope which fell out
  15. onto the ground, but one can
  16. never tell.
  17.   Hedrick bent down and
  18. plucked the mail from his
  19. lawn. He tore it open and be-
  20. gan to read.
  21.   Without getting into the
  22. exact wording, the letter
  23. was from the queen. She
  24. wanted him to come to
  25. Buckingham and have tea that
  26. Friday.
  27.   Before Hedrick had the
  28. chance to leap and click his
  29. heels, however, he noticed
  30. a smaller piece of paper hid-
  31. den behind the main letter.
  32.   It was a note which said to
  33. bring one hundred crumpets
  34. for the tea.
  35.   Hedrick did a double-take.
  36.   "One hundred?" Hedrick al-
  37. most fainted. "How am I ever
  38. going to get one hundred
  39. crumpets?"
  40.   He staggered into his
  41. pantry. There were ten left
  42. over from that day's break-
  43. fast.
  44.   Hedrick put those in a
  45. sack, which in turn he placed
  46. into his pocket.
  47.   "One hundred," he said,
  48. dazily, as he headed out the
  49. door. "Where am I ever to find
  50. those?"
