  3. Welcome to the Quake 2 Toolkit CDROM!

  6. Here is a list of some important files and directories:

  21. Usage instructions:
  22.  
  23. Run the program "setup.exe" from the root directory level of the CDROM.
  24. This will install several files onto your system.  Once this is done,
  25. you can start Winview (the CDROM browser), by clicking on:
  26.  
  27.   Start -> Program Files -> Quake 2 Toolkit -> Winview
  28.  
  29. The interface that we have provided for this CDROM is called WinView.
  30. You can use this browser to install utilities, skins, desktop themes and
  31. icons, etc.  You can even play new levels simply by double clicking on
  32. them!

  34. To use new levels in Quake 2, you have to have the official Quake 2
  35. CDROM in the drive -- the actual game CD, not our toolkit.  So how can
  36. you play new levels from WinView if our CDROM is still in the drive?  We
  37. have written a tiny little program that works "behind the scenes" to
  38. make this possible.  Whenever you double click on a new map in WinView,
  39. the map will be copied over to your Quake 2 /maps directory.  You will
  40. be asked to switch CDs -- from our toolkit to the game CD.  Then Quake 2
  41. will start up with the new level.  Note: You may have to tell WinView
  42. where your copy of Quake 2 is the first time you try to play a new
  43. level.

  45. After you are done playing the new level, you will be asked to switch
  46. CDROMs back from the game CD to the toolkit.  At that point, the new
  47. level will also be removed from your Quake 2 /maps directory.  There is
  48. no reason to clutter up your hard drive if you don't like the level,
  49. right?
  50.  
  51. WinView does have the ability to COPY levels instead of playing them so
  52. you can put the levels you really like on your hard drive.  If you
  53. decide to copy levels over new levels, the directory they should go to
  54. is C:\QUAKE2\BASEQ2\MAPS .  You may have to change "C:" to a different
  55. letter if you installed Quake 2 to a different directory on your hard
  56. drive.

  58. To use the rest of the files on this CDROM, you can use WinView's
  59. ability to extract .zip files to your hard drive.  A ".zip file" is a
  60. compressed file that many people use to exchange their productions
  61. online.  When you select a .zip file in WinView, it will be unzipped to
  62. a temporary directory on your hard drive.  WinView will then show you a
  63. list of the files that were extracted.  For things like skins, you
  64. should copy the files ending in .pcx from that temporary directory to
  65. your \QUAKE2\BASEQ2\SKINS directory.  When you restart Quake 2, you will
  66. have access to them.

  68. WinView is built to allow you to quickly look through .zip files.  Once
  69. you select a .zip file and see its contents, you can simply hit escape
  70. to remove the extracted files from your hard drive.  Normally, this
  71. makes for a very efficient browsing experience.  However, BE CAREFUL if
  72. you change the destination directory for unzipped files to something
  73. like \QUAKE2\BASEQ2\SKINS.  If you unzip files directly to your \SKINS
  74. directory, then hit escape, then say "YES" to remove the files, you will
  75. completely wipe out the contents of that directory.  In general, it is
  76. best to use the destination directory that WinView selects for you.

  81. Also included on this CDROM are some HTML pages that you can use.  Using
  82. Netscape or Internet Explorer to browse the contents of the CDROM is
  83. less efficient than using WinView (since you can't play new levels from
  84. a web browser), but the functionality is there.

  86. In order to view this disc using these 00_index.htm files, point your
  87. Web browser to the root level 00_index.htm file.

  92.   2. Click on "Open File"
  93.   3. Choose your CDROM drive
  94.   4. Select the 00_index.htm file

  108. This disk contains some shareware programs and images. Shareware can be
  109. considered to be a sort of try before you buy system where you are
  110. expected to pay the program author a registration fee if you find the
  111. program or image useful.  You will find details of registration included
  112. in the document/text files provided with each program.
