Place the scanning head (wedge-shaped top) firmly on the paper (against the resistance offered by the roller) a few millimeters in front of the text you want to scan (a red light will shine on the text). Move the reader smoothly and quickly over the line you want to scan keeping the pen as vertical as possible and without running off the line. As soon as you lift the reader from the paper, the last part of the scanned text will be shown on the display. If you want to separate each read as a different paragraph, press the return button between reads. Each successive read will append to the existing read text. ATo connect the Psion to the Pocket Reader you will need either a special lead or a Null Modem adapter. Make sure the reading pen is deactivated. Connect the reading pen to the Psion with the connector cable and PsiWin cable joined together using a simple Null Modem adapter. Plug the jack plug of the connector cable into the socket on the reading pen (ensure that the plug is firmly connected). Plug the PsiWin cable into the Psion. Activate the reading pen. Ensure the pen is connected and switched on. Ensure there are no other applications running which are using the serial port on the Psion. Start the Reader application from the Extra's bar. Either tap on the 'Read Pen' button on the toolbar, press CTRL-R or use the 'Read Pen' option under 'Pen' in the menu to read the text into the Psion. Should the link be active when Reader is started, then Reader will close it. The number of characters read is displayed in the status bar. You may erase the pen text now, or switch off the pen and then disconnect. To edit the imported text, either tap the 'Edit Text' icon on the toolbar, press CTRL-SHIFT-E, or use the 'Edit text buffer' option under 'Edit' in the menus. Amend the text displayed as required, then tap 'Done' to save changes, or ESC to revert back to the unedited state. Any changes in the length of the text checked will be reflected on the status bar on the main screen. When in the editor, you can invoke the Psion spell checker to check the text. Note that words otherwise spelled correctly may not be gramatically correct, so the text should also be scanned manually to pick up incorrectly recognised characters.
