  15. I could write a huge manual, but who would read it? Therefore, included with
  16. PsiBank is this short manual. It informs you - in a nutshell - how to install
  17. and work with PsiBank. If you have questions after reading the manual, send an 
  18. e-mail to  the abovementioned address. Feel free to report possible bugs, 
  19. criticism or suggestions.

  22. WHY DEVELOP PSIBANK
  23.  
  24. PsiBank is a simple and compact Bank Account Manager. It's been kept simple
  25. for a good reason. A lot of other programs are available with lots of
  26. powerful functions,  such as VAT handling, budgeting, etc. As there was no
  27. simple Bank Acount Manager to my knowledge, I created one.

  30. OVERVIEW

  32. PsiBank offers you the following:
  33. - Support for up to 5 groups, holding a maximum of 15 accounts each;
  34. - Support for up to 20 categories;
  35. - A category view, showing the expenses and earnings divided by category;
  36. - A balance view, showing the balances of all accounts in the current group;
  37. - A 'Balance as of' graph, showing the balances of an account or group over time;
  38. - An In vs Out graph, graphically displaying expenses and earnings over time
  39. - Payment of Standing Orders;
  40. - An import/export function;
  41. - A basic printing facility;
  42. - Password protection with variable protection level.

  45. INSTALLING
  46.  
  47. 1. Make sure viewing of the \System folder is enabled on the system screen ('Preferences').
  48.  
  49. 2. Go into \System\Apps and make a new folder called "PsiBank".
  50.  
  51. 3. Copy all the files except this one to \System\Apps\Psibank directory. You can skip 
  52.    "Psibank.hlp" if you don't need online help, "Psibank.ovl" can be skipped if you're not
  53.    going to use the import and export functions.
  54.  
  55. 4. Users of PsiBank for the Series 3a/3c can copy the files in the "BANK" directory on the
  56.    Series 3a/3c to a directory called "Psibank" on the Series 5. However, this is only 
  57.    possible if you've used version 2.0 for the Series 3a/3c. Please upgrade to that version
  58.    before transfering the files to your Series 5.

  61. FIRST THINGS FIRST
  62.  
  63. The first time you start PsiBank, you will be asked to enter your accounts
  64. and - if you wish - to enter the categories to want to use. After entering
  65. these, you will be prompted for preferences. These preferences will be OK for
  66. most people, check if that goes for you too.
  67.  
  68. Next, you're prompted for some internation settings. Please enter these, and you're
  69. ready to go.

  72. DATA ENTRY
  73.  
  74. To enter data, you can use the hotkeys as they appear in the 'Item' menu. 
  75. This is, Psion-T to enter a transfer, Psion-N to enter a new item, Psion-U
  76. to update an item and Psion-D to delete an item.

  78. In version 1.1, these keys still work, but other keys have been added to make
  79. data entry easier. You can now use the Enter key to update the item that is 
  80. selected. If the empty line is selected, the Enter key will add an item.
  81. The Tab key will always add a new transfer. Use Del to delete an item.

  83. When setting preferences, you can choose if you wish to use the Del key as a
  84. hot key or not. Set it off if you are afraid that deleting items will be a little
  85. bit too easy.

  88. HANDLING WITH STANDING ORDERS
  89.  
  90. I define Standing Orders as items that occur frequently, regular as well as 
  91. irregular. This definition is broader than in most Bank Account Managers. 
  92.  
  93. In PsiBank, you can enter items of which you know you will have to pay them
  94. repeatedly. To enter these, do the following:
  95.  
  96. Use Psion-Shift-S to go to define Standing Orders. Press Enter on the empty 
  97. line (or Shift-Enter on any line) to enter the data. First of all, enter the
  98. date the Standing Order is usually paid. Then, enter the description, amount,
  99. type (debit/credit), category and the account. 
  100.  
  101. Enter the number of days that PsiBank should prompt you about paying  the 
  102. Standing order and the number of days in advance that PsiBank should remind 
  103. you of an upcoming Standing order. (You can enter a number between 0 and 14.)
  104.  
  105. The last thing you enter, are the months in which the Standing Order should be
  106. paid. Select 'Yes' for each month that this is the case.
  107.  
  108. When you have entered Standing Orders, PsiBank will perform a check every time
  109. you start it. When it is time to pay or warn about Standing Orders, you will
  110. be prompted. You can then choose to pay the Standing Order at that time, at a 
  111. later time and to skip the Standing Order.

  113. To pay a Standing Order at any given time, use Psion-Shift-S and select the 
  114. appropriate item. Then press Psion-P to insert that Standing Order.

  117. IMPORT/EXPORT
  118.  
  119. Using the import function, you can import any comma separated file, as long as a 
  120. few conditions are met:
  121. - The amount must use a decimal point, no comma, as that is the separator.
  122. - Descriptions may only contain a comma if there are quotes surrounding the whole
  123.   description.
  124.  
  125. Next to a filename and date range, you will be prompted which fields contain the 
  126. date, description, category and amount. When you accept these values, they will 
  127. be stored for later use. This means that they will be used as defaults the next 
  128. time you import a file.

  130. The export function created a comma separated file. A decimal point is used in 
  131. the amount, descriptions are surrounded by quotes. Exporting files is very 
  132. simple: just enter the  filename, the date range and whether or not categories 
  133. and balances should be written to the file as well.

  136. FUNCTIONS

  138. File
  139. - Open group    Select the group to work with.
  140. - Move account    Move account to another group.
  141. - Open account    Select the account to work with.
  142. - Tidy account    Delete all items before a specified date.
  143. - Account info    Show name, description, full filename, file length and the
  144.                 number of items in the file.
  145. - Close        Leave Psibank.

  148. - New        Create an item. 
  149. - Transfer    Transfer to another account.
  150. - Update    Update an item.
  151. - Delete    Delete an item.
  152. - Find        Show all items that fit your selection criteria.
  153. - Jump to ...    Move the cursor to the first item on a specified date.

  156. - Categories    Shows in more detail where you spend your money on and get it

  158. - Balances     Shows the balances of all accounts

  183. The following hotkeys can be used:
  184. - Enter        When the cursor is on an item, update the current record.
  185.         When the cursor is on the empty line, enter a new record.
  186. - Tab           When the cursor is on the empty line, enter a transfer.
  187. - Del           Delete the record the cursor is currently on. (Notice that
  188.         you can turn this funtion on and off in the preferneces menu.)

  191. TERMS OF USE

  193. PsiBank is released as freeware, you owe me nothing. I only hope that you will 
  194. enjoy it.

  196. Using PsiBank means you run it at your own risk. It take no responsibility for 
  197. any bugs you might encounter, nor for their result. However, if you report 
  198. bugs, I will do my best to solve them.
