BCamerad is a program mainly for Camera Assistants, but might also be of use to DPs and Photographers. Camerad is designed for use on the Psion Series 5/Ericsson MC218 handheld computer.
Camerad consists of various modules that help you perform mathematical calculations as needed on the film set..
Camerad likes both the metric and imperial system. Camerad has a smart rounding feature and displays f-stops in a practical way. Camerad utilises the touch screen abilities of the Psion 5. You can find updates and general film information on www.cinematography.org.
Camerad has been written and designed by a Camera Assistant.

ACamerad calculates the depth of field for a given lens/aperature/focus combination.
Camerad will also display ten alternatives, ranging from
the distance to 1
the distance.
The left window displays the DoF for your settings. The right window shows the list of alternative settings.
In the top window Camerad compiles the values you have entered, alongside the Hyperfocal distance and it's DoF.

FCamerad checks if a required DoF can be obtained with the given Lens/Aperature. If it does, Camerad gives three alternatives, highlghting the balanced one. If the DoF is not sufficient, Camerad will tell you the minimum required pull. Camerad will also search to see if a higher f-stop would help.
After you have entered the distances of the closest and furthest object, Camerad will calculate if the given lens/f-stop combination will give enough Depth of Field.
A happy or sad Mart, displayed on the upper left side of the screen, will let you know: The happier his face, the greater the DoF. Equally, the sadder the face, the greater the lack of DoF.
Camerad will also display the results, the middle one being highlighted. The first result will give you the lens setting needed to get the front object just in focus. The third line reads the lens setting needed to keep the rear object in focus. The middle lines displays a good balance between those two extremes.
If the DoF is not sufficient, this usually means that you have to focus pull at least from the setting of the first line to the setting of the third line. If the DoF is adequate, you may generally want to use the highlighted seond setting.
You will also notice little numbers in brackets next to the distance results. These show the difference between the required focus and the achieved one. A '+' (plus sign) denotes that the DoF outstretches the required distance, while a '-' (minus sign) shows the lack of DoF. (+/- 0) denotes a 'spot on' focus.
If the DoF is not enough, Camerad will test if a smaller aperature would bring more luck. If so, little Mart will display the required f-stop, otherwise become even unhappier.

[ACamerad calculates the change in f-stop needed to adjust for shutter angle and/or speed changes.
You enter the shutter angle and frame rate at which you are shooting, as well as the base values for these settings.
Camerad will then diplay both the exposure time in fraction of seconds and the required compensation in 1/3 stop increments.

"BTime Calc has two sub modules, Time Lapse Calc and Time Crank Calc.
Time Lapse Calc helps you calculate time lapse shots. You enter the duration of the event and the required screentime. Camerad will then calculate how often a frame needs to be exposed.
Camerad offers you an automatic ticker that will make a short sound whenever an exposure is due.
Time Crank Calc helps you in the calculation of under- and overcranked shots. You provide the duration of the shoot and the frame rate and Camerad will display the resulting screen time.

BCamerad holds the information to more than 75 motion picture film stocks from Kodak, Fuji, Ilford and Agfa.
After chosing the stock from the drop down list or entering the code number, Camerad will display the following information (if available):
- The full name of the stock as well as its code.
- A short description of the stock.
- The ASA rating both for daylight and tungsten (including the needed correction filter).
- The Time Code Setting for Arri cameras.
Tip: For Kodak stocks, it is sufficient to enter the last two digits of the code. Camerad will automatically chose the right format depending on your preferences setting.

You can choose between 16mm/Super16 and 35mm, either the standard 4 perf. or 3 perf.
Max. f-stop
This setting will decide where the f-stop lists end. It also determines he point where Hokus Focus stops looking in cases of insufficient DoF.
System
Lets you chose between the metric (metre, centimetre) and the imperial (foot, inch) system.
Determines the display of results, as well as how distances, footage and the Circle of Confusion setting are entered
Sound
If turned on, Camerad will play a little welcoming sound on starting it. Also, HokusFocus has a little feature that plays some notes according to the outcome. Here this can be switched on or off.
Search Depth
Influences the depth with which Camerad calculates in the Hokus Focus module. The higher the value the closer the match and slower the calculations.
5 is the recommended value, providing a good balance between proximity and speed.
N.B. Please note that the displayed Depth of Fields are always accurate. Search Depth merely influencs how close the suggested settings come to the needed one.
In a worst case situation a low Search Depth would result in Camerad saying that the DoF is not quite enough when in fact it was just about enough.

*AThe Footage Calculator can be found in the Menu under 'Extras'.
Camerad converts a footage reading into a time reading.
You enter the footage and the frame rate and Camerad tells you how much screentime that is.
Great after a 16hr. day when the AD just has to know how long 12500 feet are.

ACamerad counts down the remaining time and footage.
After you have entered the length of the remaining stock and the frame rate, Camerad will continuously count down. Camerad displays both remaining footage and time.
Run-outs need not happen. A useful module if you have to keep an eye on the remaining footage, without being able to access the camera. E.g. for Crane shots and minimal crew situations.
Or you can enter what is left in the camera and time a rehersal.

ACamerad will keep its eye on the duration of an event.
If you push a keyboard button, Camerad will stop counting. You may resume in two different modes:
- continue without break: Will continue counting as though Camerad had never stopped. Great if you had interrupted the timing accidentally or if you want to do lap-style timings.
- continue with break: Camerad will continue counting from the current time onwards.
