  278. application or select the 'Help' item from the main menu within
  279. the Solun application.
  280. <b>Hint:</b> If your machine (or your PC) is connected to a
  281. printer, you can print the manual in the normal way. Use the
  282. "File:Print setup..." dialog to select whether you wish to print
  283. an individual section card or all the cards in a view. The full
  284. document will need about 30-40 sheets of paper.</dd>

  316. <p>Solun for EPOC is designed for use with the Psion Series 5 and
  317. compatible machines.</p>
  318.  
  319. <p>If you have a problem with a particular platform then, if
  320. possible, please send me an email, preferably with a screen shot
  321. of the problem.</p>

  325. <dt>Display</dt>
  326. <dd>The displays have been optimised for the Series 5 (640x200
  327. pixels) but should operate on both smaller devices (down to about
  328. 480x160 pixels) and larger ones (provided they are not too big).
  329. Users with smaller screen devices (such as the Revo) may find the
  330. display is better with the tool and title bars turned off.</dd>
  331.  
  332. <dt>ROM</dt>
  333. <dd>This software has been ported to EPOC using a Series 5
  334. (v1.01(145) UK). Other ROM levels should be supported, including
  335. EPOC Release 5 machines such as the Series 5mx, Series 7 and Revo.
  336. <b>Note:</b> That EPOC Release 6 machines ("Quartz" and
  337. "Crystal", e.g. Nokia Comunicator) are <b>not</b> supported by
  338. this release (visit Solun web site for ER6 availability).</dd>

  340. <dt>Processor</dt>
  341. <dd>Being an OPL application, Solun should be processor
  342. independent.  However, the supplied OPXs are designed for use
  343. with ARM-based machines. If you wish to use Solun on another
  344. platform (e.g. the "WINS emulator"), please see the Symbian and
  345. Neuon web sites (addresses in Conditions section) to see if the
  346. OPXs are available for that platform.</dd>

  354. <p>The following sections outline how to install and use this
  355. version of Solun. Please follow these instructions carefully.</p>

  357. <h3 clear="all">5.1 Upgrading from Solun4</h3>
  358.  
  359. <p>If you have been using Solun 4.x, there are some considerations
  360. when you install this release:</p>

  364. <dt>If you have been using Solun 4.2 or earlier:</dt>
  365. <dd>Your existing copy of Solun does not use SIS files.
  366. Please delete the contents of the \System\Apps\Solun4\ directory
  367. and remove Solun.ini and Solun.dat from the C:\System\ directory,
  368. if present.</dd>

  370. <dt>If you are upgrading from a any version between 4.21 and
  371. 4.5 inclusive:</dt>
  372. <dd>Your existing copy of Solun uses SIS files.
  373. It is recommended that you use "Add/Remove" on the Control Panel
  374. to remove your existing copy <em>before</em> installing this
  375. SIS file.
  376. Note that your old settings will <b>not</b> be preserved.</dd>

  380. <p><b>Note:</b> As of Version 4.3, Solun uses more 'EPOC-friendly'
  381. shortcut keys for menu options (such as Ctrl-T for
  382. 'hide toolbar'). Users familiar with the older, Series 3 hot-keys
  383. (such as Ctrl-T for show 'Time' dialog) may wish to turn on
  384. the 'Old style shortcut keys' option on the Tools menu.</p>

  400. <p>To install this version of Solun, simply use the following
  401. steps:</p>

  404. <li>Close all applications before installing this software.</li>

  406. <li>Using PsiWin2 or the "Add/Remove" icon on the EPOC Control
  407. Panel (if you have it), install the main application, Solun.sis
  408. <b>Notes:</b> Please read all messages carefully.
  409. You will be asked whether you wish to install the Solun report
  410. module and the online User Manual and help (it is recommended
  411. that you install both, you can always remove them at a later date
  412. to recover up to 240 KB disk space).
  413. The supplied OPXs are for ARM-based machines,
  414. such as the Series 5, Series 5mx, Series 7, Revo, etc.
  415. If you wish to run this application on the EPOC emulator then
  416. please contact the OPX authors (web addresses above) for the
  417. appropriate versions.

  421. "Solun" icon.
  422. If you are a new user, now read the
  423. <a href="#quick"> quick tour </a> section of this document
  424. and don't forget to browse Solun's online help file (available

  426. manual as well as hints and tips to get you started.</li>

  430. <p>Please consult your Psion manuals for more details of these
  431. operations, but let me know if you're having problems.</p>

  433. <h3 clear="all">5.4 Installation problems?</h3>
  434.  
  435. <h4 clear="all">5.4.1 If the install hangs whilst "Checking dependencies"</h4>
  436.  
  437. <p>Sometimes an install using PsiWin seems to freeze during the
  438. "Checking dependencies" stage. I'm not quite sure whether this is
  439. a problem with particular versions of PsiWin or particular versions
  440. of Windows, but it does seem to happen most with Series 7
  441. machines.</p>
  442.  
  443. <p>If you get this problem then please try copying the unzipped
  444. Solun.sis file from your PC to any directory one of the drives on
  445. your EPOC device. You should then be able to double-tap the file
  446. on the System screen and install it from there. Once Solun has been
  447. installed, you can delete Solun.sis from your EPOC device</p>
  448.  
  449. <h4 clear="all">5.4.2 If you have problems with OPX versions</h4>
  450.  
  451. <p>Solun requires the supplied versions (or later) of some
  452. OPX files to provide special functions from the EPOC system.
  453. Installing the supplied SIS file should ensure you have the required
  454. levels or later on your machine.</p>
  455.  
  456. <p>Unfortunately, there are some older and misbehaved applications
  457. out there which do not supply these OPXs correctly and these may
  458. cause problems with Solun and other applications that require a
  459. newer version.</p>
  460.  
  461. <p>If you experience messages about missing or incompatible OPX
  462. versions (or perhaps even operating system kernel errors) when
  463. starting Solun, please consider the following tips.</p>
  464.  
  465. <ol>
  466.  
  467. <li>Close all applications and reinstall the supplied SIS file.
  468. It is recommended that you install the OPX files on the internal
  469. (C:) drive. Attempt to start Solun.</li>
  470.  
  471. <li>If you still have problems, backup your machine (if possible).
  472. If you have installed the "Add/Remove" icon on your Series 5
  473. Control Panel, use it to remove the package with a name similar to
  474. "RMR Systinfo OPX", if present. Next, remove manually
  475. \System\OPX\Systinfo.opx from both C: and D: drives, if present.
  476. Now, reinstall the supplied SIS file on to your machine and
  477. attempt to start Solun again.</li>
  478.

  481. <p><b>Note:</b> I recommend keeping a copy of Solun.sis
  482. handy in case installing another ill-behaved application
  483. in the future should regress the level of the OPXs and cause
  484. problems with Solun and other applications.</p>

  486. <h3 clear="all">5.5 Removing the Solun application</h3>
  487.  
  488. <p>If you have finished with this software you can remove the
  489. application as follows:</p>
  490. <ol>
  491.  
  492. <li>Make sure the Solun application is not running.</li>
  493.  
  494. <li>Using the "Add/Remove" icon on the EPOC control, remove
  495. the "Solun - The Pocket Planetarium" application.</li>
  496.

  499. <p>After you have completed these steps, Solun will have been
  500. removed from your machine's memory and "Extras" bar.</p>

  504. <h2 clear="all"><a name="toc6">6 A Quick Tour</a></h2>
  505.  
  506. <p>Once you have installed the Solun application, you are ready
  507. to take a quick tour...</p>
  508.  
  509. <dl>

  511. <dt>Starting Solun</dt>
  512. <dd>Touch the new "Solun" icon on the "Extras" bar. After a few
  513. seconds you will be presented with the welcome screen.</dd>
  514.  
  515. <dt>Display a star chart</dt>
  516. <dd>After Solun has finished initialising and the welcome screen
  517. has been displayed, press the "View" button on the tool bar and
  518. then select "Star chart" from the pop-up menu. If you have no
  519. tool bar visible, use the "View:Display mode" sub-menu.
  520. The first time you display a star chart, Solun calculates a
  521. trigonometry table, which can take a while. If this takes more
  522. that a couple of seconds, you are given the option to save the
  523. table to disk for next time (as C:\System\Apps\Solun\Solun.dat).
  524. Press Y and Solun will continue to draw the chart.
  525. When the chart is complete, you will see a representation of
  526. the current sky as seen from your home city, facing South. By
  527. default, Solun displays the planets and the outlines of the

  530. <dt>Changing the star chart display</dt>
  531. <dd>From the menu, select "Chart:Detail and colour..." to display
  532. the Chart detail and colour dialog. Select '<4' into the number of
  533. stars field and set all other fields to 'Black' (or 'White' if
  534. your display currently has a dark background). Now, press the "Next"
  535. button to choose which lines to plot. Set all the lines to
  536. 'Grey'.
  537. From the menu, again, choose "Chart:Sky view direction..."
  538. (or press the "Sky" toolbar button) to display the sky view control.
  539. Tap the "W" (west) direction, or press the "W" key.
  540. Solun will begin to redraw the chart with your new settings.</dd>

  550. <dd>To quickly see which planets are currently above the horizon
  551. from your home city, press the 5 (number five) key, or choose the
  552. "Quick visibility" option in the "View:Display mode" menu. A grid is
  553. displayed representing your horizon along the bottom, and showing
  554. the symbols for the planets.
  555. To view the meanings of the planet symbols in an inset window,
  556. select the "View:Auxiliary display:Planets key" menu item.</dd>

  558. <dt>The moon information panel</dt>
  559. <dd>To display a panel of information about the moon, choose 
  560. "Information:Moon..." from the main menu.
  561. The displayed panel includes the rise and set times for the moon,
  562. as seen from your location today, and the current moon phase.</dd>

  565. <dd>From the main menu, choose "Information:Report display"
  566. to enter the Report dialog. Press the "New..." button and select
  567. "Moon phase" to display the moon phase report.
  568. Solun will calculate the date and times for the quarter moon
  569. phases for the next few weeks. In addition, an indication is
  570. displayed of the likelihood of an eclipse at each new and full
  571. moon.
