GYou are above the surface of a small planetoid. Your mission, to protect the men on the surface.
Your ship is equipped with the latest in high-performance radar, and armed with both a laser cannon and a rack of smart bombs that kill everything within sight. However, use the smart bombs wisely, as you start with only three.
The men on the surface are threatened by landers. Landers will attempt to pick up men and carry them off.
Shoot the landers. Should a lander pick up a man then all is not lost - shoot the lander, then catch the man with your ship and place him back on the ground - easy. (grin)
Should a lander make it to the top of the screen with a man, the lander will mutate into a half-man-half-lander called a mutant. Mutants are more intelligent and more aggressive than landers, so watch out.
As if that wasn't enough, you also have to deal with bombers, which leave a trail of lethal bombs behind them and pods, which in themselves are quite innocuous, but which when shot, release swarmers
little creatures with a swarming instinct and an unfriendly disposition. And, should you take too long to clear an attack wave, baiters will appear and, well, bait you (possibly to death).
Should you lose all ten men then the world ends, quite literally, and all the landers turn into mutants. Not nice.
If you are good enough then you can survive, as every fifth attack wave finds you back with all the men on the surface, and things return to
normal'.
Everything you shoot increases your score
except when you shoot men - you're not supposed to do that!
You also gain points at the end of each attack wave - the more men surviving at the end of the attack wave, the higher the points awarded.
You start with three lives and three smart bombs. Every 10,000 points earns you one extra life and one extra smart bomb. With practice, you will be getting six digit scores and having a great deal of fun.
Believe me - people can get very good at deVender
AThe game's level of difficulty can be altered by choosing Set game difficulty from Preferences under the Tools menu. There are four levels of difficulty ranging from
Gentle
Arcade strength
, with the default being
Gentle
Arcade strength
has been tuned to feel like the original game, and experienced players can and do attain scores in excess of 200,000 at this level of difficulty - really!
5CYour ship lives in a two-dimensional world. Its primary controls are Up and Down, Thrust which will accelerate you in the direction in which you are pointing, and Reverse which changes that direction.
You can Fire the laser cannon and trigger a Smart Bomb, and if things are getting too hot and you know you're about to die, then you can engage the Hyperspace drive.
Hyperspace hurls you to another part of the planet. However, use it only in an emergency as the technology is still young, and there is a chance that re-entry will trigger an explosion.
A list of the default keys for doing all this is available from the Tools menu. They may feel a little strange at first, and you can change them if you wish, but my advice is to live with them for a while. Experience has shown that they are in fact pretty optimal.
CDeVender can play up to five different sound samples, of which four are supplied with the game. The default sounds are designed to be short and hence use less
space and have less impact on the game
s smoothness.
If you wish to delete sounds to save space then I suggest that you delete all except Mhelp.snd, as the game is a great deal more difficult to play without Mhelp.snd.
Should you wish to plug in your own sounds (perhaps converting them from other formats using PsiWin) then the following tells you what you need to know. The sound files must be stored in \System\Apps\deVender in EPOC sound format, and they are:
Dman.snd - man dying
Gstart.snd - game start (not supplied with game)
Mhelp.snd - squeal when a man is picked up
Mutate.snd - lander mutating
Xman.snd - extra man (every 10,000)
Last time I looked, sound samples from the original game were available on the World Wide Web.
\FThis is shareware that took a great deal of time to develop, so if you keep it then please register. Once registered, you will be able to play attack wave three onwards, and the adrenaline really starts to flow
