CRMRDraw is a powerful vector graphics application. You can use it to draw and edit pictures and diagrams made up from various graphical objects.
Vector graphics are different from bitmap graphics (such as those produced by Sketch) in that they are a series of objects, rather than a matrix of pixels. This means that they can be scaled and rotated without loss of detail. Pictures in RMRDraw can be made up from:
Rectangles and ellipses
Irregular shaped areas (Path objects)
Embedded documents (such as Sketch documents)
Geometric objects can be transparent or filled with colour. Their surrounding lines can be any thickness and any colour.
Vector images often benefit from smaller file sizes than similar bitmap images. This is important on a PDA where storage space is at a premium. Another advantage of vector images is in printing. The image will always be printed at the resolution of the printer
if you have a 600dpi printer, then the image is rendered at 600dpi.

ARMRDraw documents are composed of five basic object types:
1. Rectangles
2. Ellipses
3. Paths (which can be constructed from straight and curved line segments)
4. Text
5. Embedded documents
Additionally, any number of objects can be
grouped
together and treated as one.
ATo create a rectangle you must select the Rectangle tool. Either tap on the rectangle on the toolbar, choose Tools -> Drawing Tools -> Rectangle from the menu, or press Shift+Ctrl+R.
Rectangles can be moved, resized and rotated. See the section on transforming objects for details.
The appearance of rectangles can be altered. See the section on geometric object styles for details.
|ATo create an ellipse you must select the Ellipse tool. Either tap on the rectangle on the toolbar, choose Tools -> Drawing Tools -> Ellipse from the menu, or press Shift+Ctrl+W.
Ellipses can be moved, resized and rotated. See the section on transforming objects for details.
The appearance of ellipses can be altered. See the section on geometric object styles for details.
EThere are two basic types of paths. These are closed paths and open paths. Once you have started entering one type of path, you cannot convert it to the other type. Paths consist of any combination of straight and curved line segments.
To start entering a path object, either
Select one of the path tools from the toolbar
Choose one of the path tools from the Tools -> Drawing Tools menu
Press Shift+Ctrl+L to start a closed path with a line segment
Press Shift+Ctrl+C to start a closed path with a curve segment
Now click where you want the path to start.
To enter segments, ensure that the correct tool (either straight- or curved- lines) is selected. Either click where you want the vertex to be or drag to the end of the line segment.
To complete the path, either
Press Return
Select a non-path tool
Drag the final segment so that it ends near the path
s start point.
To edit a path, you must be using the Select tool. Select the path that you wish to edit (ensuring that only one object is selected) and either choose Edit from the Selection menu or press Ctrl+D. The path will be redrawn with Control Handles and Control Point Handles. You can drag these handles around to alter the path. To finish editing a path, either:
Press Return
Select a different tool
Click away from the handles
Paths can be moved, resized and rotated. See the section on transforming objects for details.
The appearance of paths can be altered. See the section on geometric object styles for details.
DTo create a text object, you must either select the text tool from the toolbar, choose Tools -> Insert Text from the menu, or press Shift+Ctrl+X.
Now tap where you want the text to start. A small vertical bar will appear. Now type the text you want. To move onto the next line, press Return. Note that no wrapping occurs, and each line is considered to be an individual object (unless several lines are grouped together).
To alter an existing line of text, you must be using the Select tool. Select the line of text that you wish to alter (ensuring that only one object is selected). Now choose Selection -> Edit from the menu (or press Ctrl+D). The cursor will appear at the end of the line. Now you can adjust the text. To finish editing the text, either press Return or tap the page.
To adjust the colour of the text, select the lines of text you wish to alter and choose Style -> Text colour from the menu.
To adjust the font of the text, or it
s bold or italic attribute, choose the Style -> Text font menu option. This option can also be used to adjust the size of the text, by specifying a size in points.
Note that you cannot rotate a text object.
BTo embed a document inside your RMRDraw document, either choose Embed Object from the Tools menu or press Shift+Ctrl+O. You will be presented with a list of documents which can be embedded. When you exit the embedded document it will be placed in the top left of the screen. Using the Select tool, you can drag the document to where you want it.
To edit an embedded document, select it with the Select tool. Now choose Selection -> Edit from the menu, or press Ctrl+D.
Note that you cannot rotate an embedded document.
DTo select the Select tool either tap on the select tool on the toolbar, choose Tools -> Select from the menu, or press Shift+Ctrl+Z.
To select an object, tap on it. When an object is selected, it has a dotted rectangle drawn around it (the
bounding box
). In addition, the dotted rectangle has two
handles
on the right hand side. The top one is the
rotate handle
, the bottom one is the
resize handle
If the object you wish to select is behind another, you may need to tap on it several times. Each time you tap, an object further back is selected.
You can select more than one object at once. Normally when you tap on an object, the existing selction is de-selected. To add (or remove) an object from the selection, hold down Shift and tap.
Another way to select multiple objects is to use the Select tool to drag a rectangle on screen. Any objects which intersect the rectangle are selected. You can also hold down Shift while you drag to toggle the selection status of all the objects which intersect the dragged-out rectangle.
HTo transform an object, it must first be selected (see Selecting Objects).
The following transformations are available:
Rotate
Horizontal Flip
Vertical Flip
Magnify
X Scale (magnify in X direction only)
Y Scale (magnify in Y direction only)
Line scale
To move the selection, drag inside one of the selected bounding boxes. While you drag, the bounding boxes of all selected objects are moved to show where the objects will be when they are dropped. Another way to move objects is to use the cursor keys. These will move all selected objects a small distance in the direction of the arrow on the key.
To rotate the selected objects, drag one of the rotate (top) handles. All selected objects will be rotated by the same angle. All the selected objects are rotated around their own centres. If you want to rotate several objects around a common point, you must group them together first (see Object Management).
To flip the selected objects, either choose Flip horizontally or Flip vertically from the Transform menu. Each object is flipped about it
s own centre line. If you want to flip several objects about a common line, you must group them together first.
To adjust the size of the selected objects you can drag one of the resize (lower) handles. Alternatively, you can choose Magnify from the Transform menu, and specify a factor. Factors above 1.0 will enlarge the objects, factors below 1.0 will shrink them. All objects will be resized by the same factor, and they will be resized from their individual top left points. If you wish to resize several objects from a common point, you must group them together first.
To adjust the size of the selected objects in a single plane only (either horizontally or vertically), choose X Scale or Y Scale from the Transform menu, and specify the magnification factor.
The final option, line scale, does not alter the overall size of the selected objects. It just alters the thickness of the lines of any geometric objects in the selection by a factor. For example, to make all the lines twice as thick (regardless of their current size) you would specify a factor of 2.0. If you want to make all the lines within the selection a common size, use Style -> Line Width instead.
IEGeometric objects, eg Rectangles, Ellipses and Paths can all have different appearances. The following properties can be altered:
Line width
Line colour
Line pattern
Fill colour
Winding rule (paths only)
Each property can be found on the Style menu.
To alter the appearance of an object you must be using the Select tool. Select all the objects that you wish to change. Now use the appropriate menu entry to bring up a dialogue box.
The line width is specified in points (1/72 of an inch). There is not always an unique mapping from points to pixels, so on screen at certain maginification, a 2pt line may appear to be the same thickness as a 4pt line.
The line pattern controls whether the line is solid or dotted. A variety of dot/dash patterns are available.
Colours are specified as 24-bit RGB. This means that you will be able to create drawings in full colour, even you only see them in greyscale on screen. Colours can also be transparent so that you can see through to the objects behind.
The winding rule determines which part of a closed polygon is filled.
When you set one of these properties, subsequent objects that you create have this property by default. For example if you draw a grey rectangle and change it
s fill colour to black, the next rectangle (or ellipse or path) that you draw will automatically be filled black.
@Sometimes you want to deal with several objects together as if they were one. This is achieved by grouping objects together.
To create a group, select all the objects that you wish to group together. Then choose Selection -> Group from the menu. The group can be manipulated as if it were one object
for example if you rotate a group it will be rotated around the centre of the group.
To ungroup objects so that they may be manipulated individually, select the group and choose Selection -> Ungroup from the menu.
To make up a drawing, objects are placed on the page. If one object is placed in front of another, the object to the back may be obscured (or partially obscured). Two options are provided to alter an object
s position in the
stack
of objects. Objects can be moved to the front (so they are not obscured) or to the back (so that they %
may be obscured by any other object). Choosing Front or Back from the Selection menu will move the selected objects within the stack.
You can also align objects relative to each other. This can be achieved with the menu under Selection -> Align. RMRDraw remembers the last alignment that you applied, and assigns the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+A to it.
Objects can be snapped to the nearest grid point by choosing Selection -> Snap to grid from the menu. Each selected object is pulled to the nearest grid point. In the case of path objects, it is the first point in the path which is pulled onto the grid (other points move the same distance as the first point, but may not be on grid points themselves). In the case of text objects, it is the baseline of the text which is pulled to the grid.
GWhen editing RMRDraw files, you can zoom in or out of the document at anywhere between 10 and 800% magnification. To increase magnification, choose Zoom In from the View menu, or press Ctrl+M. To decrease magnification, choose Zoom Out from the View menu, or press Shift+Ctrl+M. When the magnification is too small, it will wrap around to being very large (and vice-versa).
To set a specific zoom factor, choose Set Zoom from the View menu, or press Shift+Ctrl+E. The dialogue box which appears can be given an exact percentage, with shortcut buttons for 50, 100 and 200 percent. It also allows you to scale the drawing so that the width of the drawing is equal to the width of the window, or so that the entire document fits within the window.
To assist with accurate placement of objects, a grid is provided. You can choose whether or not objects are automatically locked to the grid by choosing Lock to grid from the View menu. You can choose whether or not the grid is drawn on screen by choosing Show grid from the View menu. You can also set the spacing between grid points, and the number of subdivisions, by choosing Grid Details from the View menu.
By default, RMRDraw uses metric units for the grid and page margins. If you want to use Imperial units instead, you should choose Imperial Units from the View menu. Choose the same option again to revert to the metric system. Note that font sizes and line widths are always specified in points.
RMRDraw can use either a 4- or 16- grey screen mode. The 16-grey mode gives a better display, but uses more battery power. You can choose the Use 16 greys option on the View menu to switch between 4- and 16- greys.
If your drawing is targeted a the printed page, you can draw the paper margins on the screen. Any objects which lie outside of the paper margins will not be printed. To turn on / off drawing of paper margins, choose Show Margins from the View menu. Make sure you set up the paper correctly (using File -> Printing -> Page setup).
AYou can embed a RMRDraw document into other documents. For instance, from Word, try
1. insert object (SHIFT+CTRL+O)
2. select RMRDraw as the
from program
3. select Ok
4. Use RMRDraw to create your picture
5. exit the embedded RMRDraw document
The drawing is then displayed in Word, using the glass door capability. RMRDraw supports zooming: try zooming the word document in and out using CTRL+M and SHIFT+CTRL+M.
ARMRDraw is capable of importing and exporting WMF (Windows MetaFiles). These options can be found on the File -> More menu.
WMF files are commonly available under Windows, allowing RMRDraw to interchange data with many Windows applications.
You should remember that WMF <-> RMRDraw conversion is not
perfect
. When importing a WMF file, some [rare] objects may be lost . When exporting to WMF, grouping information is lost, as are any embedded documents.
