The View preferences options (Ctrl+K) affect how the program looks and displays information. The available settings are arranged into two pages on the View preferences dialog:
There are two choices provided in this dialog:
Show grid lines
Date column
The Show grid lines option allows you to specify in which direction grid lines are drawn in the main screen, these can help to visually separate the messages on show.
Using the Date column option you can set the program to display either the Time & date of messages, or the Date only inside the Date column of the display panel.
Columns
With this page you can 'fine tune' the columns which are shown on screen. These columns hold various data about the messages you are viewing, such as subject, date, etc.
You can mark any of the various columns visible or invisible so that the panel shows only the information you really want. You can also manually set the width of all visible columns.
To do this, select the name of the column you wish to change using the Column choice box. Then move down and ensure Calculate width is set to Fixed. You will then be able to enter your desired width (in characters) inside the Width box.
Note: The Subject column cannot be made invisible. It is the default column, and is therefore always on show.
Tip: Column widths can also be resized on screen by dragging the right hand corner of the appropriate column title area.

Date: RMRNews will catch up with messages until the date you specify.
Days: RMRNews will catch up with messages until the previous number of days specified (e.g. a setting of 3 here causes only messages which are 3 days or less old to be downloaded)
Articles: RMRNews will catch up with the last amount of articles specified (e.g. a setting of 100 here causes only the last 100 messages to be downloaded)
4. On the Misc. page specify:
Whether RMRNews should Disconnect from Internet after it has completed the operations you tell it to do (for example retrieving all messages for the current server).
Whether RMRNews should warn you if you try to close the program whilst there are still messages waiting in your Outbox to be sent.
These options can be useful if you want to ensure RMRNews doesn't close the connection automatically in case other programs (such as the Web browser) are using it.

When you read groups with a lot of traffic, it is possible that there will be various threads which do not interest you and which you therefore do not want to download. It is also possible that particular posters to various newsgroups may, for example, offend you (maybe not directly but with their comments to others).
If these situations arise, you can use a Killfile to effectively ignore them.
To use the killfile in RMRNews, access the Killfile dialog from the Settings cascade under the Tools menu. From here, you can add entries to ignore. These can be based on the name of the poster, the subject of a message or both. Simply enter the information you want to kill.
Using the same dialog you can Delete entries from the killfile, and Edit existing ones too.
To activate the killfile, check the box labelled Activate killfile.
Before you can start to retrieve and post news articles, you need to enter some information to properly configure RMRNews.
You must enter this important information in these 3 dialogs which can be accessed from the Settings cascade on the Tools menu:
Personal settings
Servers settings
Newsgroups settings
See the Help items on these for the specific details that are required..
There are various other settings available on this Settings cascade too, but these are optional.

RMRNews can display the articles in either a Threaded or Sorted fashion.
Threaded messages
On the Internet, when someone posts a new message they are said to be starting a new 'thread'. When people reply to the original message, they are simply continuing the thread. Further replies to the original message or replies to the replies are all considered part of the same thread.
Viewing messages by thread simply groups all posts on a particular thread together for easier reading. Threads are shown with the replies slightly indented compared to the original message.
You can turn this option on and off by using Show threads (Shift+Ctrl+T) on the View menu.
Sorted messages
Using the Sort by (Ctrl+I) option on the Tools menu you can display messages in different orders, sorted in ascending or descending order on any column type.
For example, if you wished to delete all local messages which are older than today you could sort by date and then you could easily determine which messages are older than today.
Tip: A faster way of changing the order in which files are sorted is to simply tap on the column titles of the main display.
Note: When threading is turned on, the only valid choice in the Sort by dialog is Date.

There are currently well in excess of 30,000 newsgroups available on the Internet. RMRNews can download a listing of these groups (depending on which ones your server allows access to).
Downloading such a large number of groups may take a very long time (more then 10 minutes for 20,000 newsgroups) and storing this list on your EPOC device may require about 1MB of disk space.
To download the newsgroups listing:
1. Use the Select newsgroups option on the View menu (or tap the RMRNews top titlebar) which produces a drop down list of all the current local folders and configured news servers. Select the news server you wish to retrieve groups for.
2. You will then be switched to the Newsgroups view. From here, select Retrieve newsgroup list from the Transfer menu or tap the Get list toolbar button. A warning dialog will then be displayed - tap Yes to start downloading the newsgroup list.
3. If you are not already connected to the Internet, the Connect to Internet dialog is displayed listing your current settings. Press OK to confirm the settings.
4. RMRNews will then connect to your news server and download the current newsgroup listing. The status bar at the bottom of the screen will keep you informed of progress.
5. When done, you will see a list of all available groups on the server in the left hand panel of the screen.
Tip: If you want to interrupt downloading, select Stop on the Transfer menu, or tap the
button on the right of the bottom status bar.

There are several methods available from the Transfer menu and toolbar buttons for downloading the messages from your subscribed newsgroups.
Before you try to retrieve messages, use the Newsgroups dialog on the Settings cascade under the Tools menu to specify your preferences for:
If RMRNews should retrieve headers only or headers and articles for offline reading.
How many messages will be retrieved at one time when you use the Retrieve next messages option.
Then choose the required method for retrieving news articles:
Retrieve next messages (Ctrl+G) which gets all messages starting from the last message which was retrieved by you already, in the order of oldest to newest. (The first time RMRNews is used, it starts at the oldest available message on the news server).
Retrieve all new | From this newsgroup (Shift+Ctrl+B) will get all available messages, not just the next set of available messages up to the number you specified in Newsgroup settings.
Retrieve all new | From this server (Shift+Ctrl+C) will get all available new messages from all subscribed newsgroups on this news server.
Retrieve all new | From all servers (Shift+Ctrl+D) will get all available new messages from the subscribed newsgroups on all the news servers you have set up.
Retrieve marked articles (Shift+Ctrl+G) will get the message bodies of only the articles you have marked from previously downloaded headers. This method is more economical of online time if you want to selectively download only the messages you are interested in. See the Help topic Retrieving messages - marked articles for more information.
Catch up | with this newsgroup / this server / all servers is useful if lots of messages are available, or if you have not viewed the group for a long time, To avoid it taking some time to reach the most current messages this allows you to pick a starting point for selectively downloading messages from a certain date or for a number of days or number of articles. See the Help topic Retrieving messages - 'Catch up' for information.
To retrieve messages:
1. Use the Select newsgroups option on the View menu, or tap the RMRNews top titlebar, which produces a drop down list of all the current local folders and configured news servers. Select the newsgroup which you wish to retrieve messages for.
2. Select the required Retrieve option (as described above) from the Transfer menu or tap the Retr. toolbar button and choose the option.
3. If you are not already connected to the Internet, the Connect to Internet dialog is displayed listing your current settings. Press OK to confirm the settings.
4. RMRNews will then connect to your news server and download the messages. The status bar at the bottom of the screen will keep you informed of progress.
Tip: If you want interrupt downloading, select Stop on the Transfer menu, or tap the
button on the right of the bottom status bar.

When the Settings for Newsgroups are set to 'Headers only', the Retrieve methods will not download the full messages, but just the headers. In the Newsgroup view the subject line for each message will not show the small news article icon, indicating that the article bodies are missing.
This makes downloading news articles a two-stage process, useful when you want to see all the subject lines but only fetch and read the articles of interest to you, or to keep on-line time to the minimum.
To read any of these articles you must then retrieve the message bodies. To do this:
1. Use the Select newsgroups option on the View menu, or tap the RMRNews top titlebar, and select the required newsgroup.
2. Browse the list of news messages and mark those you wish to download for reading by any of the following methods:
- tapping individual entries with the pen in the tick column,
- holding down Shift key and using the arrow keys,
- using the Select all | Without articles (Shift+Ctrl+V) option from the Edit menu,
- using the Select all | Messages (Ctrl+A) option from the Edit menu.
3. Then use the Retrieve marked articles (Shift+Ctrl+G) option from the Transfer menu to get the message bodies for these articles.
4. If you are not already connected to the Internet, the Connect to Internet dialog is displayed listing your current settings. Press OK to confirm the settings.
5. RMRNews will then connect to your news server and download the message bodies. The status bar at the bottom of the screen will keep you informed of progress.
Tip: If you want interrupt downloading, select Stop on the Transfer menu, or tap the
button on the right of the bottom status bar.

The Catch up command lets you pick a starting point for downloading messages from the server. If you wish to read a busy group with RMRNews, there may be thousands of messages available when you first subscribe. To avoid downloading all of these, it is sometimes useful to download, for example, only the messages up to the current day.
Before you try to retrieve messages, use Newsgroups dialog on the Settings cascade under the Tools menu and (on the Catch up page) specify:
If RMRNews should catch up either headers only or both headers and articles for offline reading.
The catch up method.
To Catch up messages:
1. Use the Select newsgroups option on the View menu (or tap the RMRNews top titlebar which produces a drop down list of all the current local folders and configured news servers) and select the newsgroup which you wish to retrieve messages for.
2. Select Catch up|With
on the Transfer menu.
3. If you are not already connected to the Internet, the Connect to Internet dialog is displayed listing your current settings. Press OK to confirm the settings.
4. RMRNews will then connect to your news server and catch up with the messages using the method you selected in the settings dialog.
Tip: If you want to interrupt downloading, select Stop on the Transfer menu, or tap the
button on the right of the bottom status bar.

There are essentially two ways you can post an article. Firstly as a brand new message and secondly as a reply to an existing message.
Creating a new message
To do this, select Create new article from the File menu.
Replying to a message
To do this, select the message you wish to reply to and then select the Newsgroup option on the Reply to cascade under the File menu.
Whichever method you use, you will then be put into the message editor. From here, you should first enter the newsgroup you wish to R
post to in the Newsgroups: box.
Tip: You can post to more than one group at a time ('cross post') by typing more than one newsgroup name, separating multiple names with a comma. For example:
comp.sys.psion.misc, comp.sys.psion.apps
Next, enter a suitable subject for your message, and then type the main text (the 'body') of your message in the main editor on the screen.
If you wish to keep a copy of your message so far but don't want it to be made ready for posting, use the Save as draft menu or toolbar options. This will place your message in the Draft folder where you can later go back and edit it before it is posted.
To make your message ready for posting, use the Save to outbox menu or toolbar option. This will move your message into the Outbox.
Posting message
When you select the Post item on the Transfer menu, RMRNews will post any messages in your Outbox to the relevant newsgroups.
You need to be on-line to do this, so if you are not already connected to the Internet, the Connect to Internet dialog is displayed listing your current settings. Press OK to confirm the settings.

News (NNTP) server: type in name of your news server, e.g. news.yourisp.com.
Port: do not change this setting unless your ISP tells you to.
Log on required: some news servers (and private news servers) require the user to log in and supply a username and password. If you aren't sure whether your server requires an additional login, you can ask your ISP.
Username: the login name used to access your news server.
Password: your password used to access your news server.
Confirm password: re-enter your password, to ensure that it is correct.

Before you start to read and create news articles you can alter some settings to govern how this process works.
To enter the article settings:
1. Select Settings|Articles on the Tools menu.
2. On the Compose page specify:
Include original article in reply: whether RMRNews should by default quote the original article in the body of your message replies
Remove signature from reply: if this is selected, RMRNews will automatically remove the signatures of other people from messages you reply to (provided the signatures conform to the Internet standard and begin with "-- ", i.e. dash, dash, space)
Quote string: this governs what RMRNews places at the beginning of quoted lines from the original message to show that they are actually quoted rather than new text
Wrap lines: if this is checked, RMRNews will automatically wrap lines of text for you at the specified number of characters
2. On the Read page specify:
Maximum article size: since displaying large messages can take time, you can use this option to specify a 'cut off' point for the maximum message size RMRNews should show.
Note: RMRNews can only currently display messages up to 64KB.

All newsgroup messages have a series of header codes and values. By default RMRNews only shows the Newsgroups and Subject line headers when reading articles. Although you can use View headers option to show the full headers when reading messages, you might want to set one or two of these headers to always be on view.
Correspondingly, you may wish to add some specific extra header information to your outgoing messages.
The Article header settings allows you to view or add to the headers.
To enter the article header settings:
1. Select Settings|Article headers on the Tools menu.
2. On the Headers to show page you can add the names of particular headers to always show in messages, e.g.
Message-ID:
X-Mailer:
MIME-Version:
and so on.
3. On the Headers to add page you can enter the names and text values for any extra headers to be added to your posted messages.
To activate these header options, check the boxes at the bottom of each page.

Storing the newsgroup listings RMRNews requires for operation can consume a lot of disk space (over 1MB if your server carries a lot groups). When you actually subscribe to newsgroups and begin downloading messages even more space is used to store the relevant information.
For this reason, RMRNews provides you with a setting for which disk it should store its messages and other files on. This is initially set to disc C, but users with Compact Flash cards may find it wise to change this setting to disc D in order to save space on their Internal discs.
Note: If you have already downloaded a lot of newsgroups and messages, changing the storage location could take some time to complete the file move.

Before you can read or post articles you need to subscribe to one or more newsgroups.
There are two ways to subscribe to newsgroups - by manually entering the newsgroup names you want to subscribe to, or more typically by selecting them from the previously downloaded newsgroups list (see Retrieving newsgroups).
To manually subscribe to newsgroups without a newsgroups listing:
1. In the Newsgroups view use the Tab key or tap anywhere in the right hand Subscribed panel, in order to make this panel active.
2. Select Subscribe (Shift+Ctrl+S) on the Edit menu or tap the Subs button on the toolbar. A Subscribe to newsgroup dialog will then be displayed. Enter the exact name of the newsgroup you wish to subscribe to.
3. Repeat step #2 until you have entered the names of all the newsgroups you require.
4. Close the Newsgroups view (select Close newsgroups on the File menu or tap the X button at the right of the top toolbar).
To subscribe to newsgroups using the newsgroups listing:
1. In the Newsgroups view mark the newsgroups to subscribe to from the list in the left hand panel. You can do this in two ways:
- by tapping with the pen in the tick column,
- holding down Shift key and using the arrow keys.
2. Select Subscribe (Shift+Ctrl+S) on the Edit menu or tap the Subs button on the toolbar. You can also drag & drop to subscribe by dragging the selected newsgroups from the left into the right hand panel.
3. Close Newsgroups view as explained in step 4 above.
Tip: Check carefully which panel is active when you select Subscribe or tap the Subs toolbar button. If the right panel is active, the Subscribe to newsgroup dialog is displayed.
Tip: You can go to directly to the Article view for any of the subscribed newsgroups by using the Enter key or tapping it's name.
To Unsubscribe from any newsgroups, select them in the right hand panel, and use the Unsubscribe menu option (Shift+Ctrl+U), the Unsubs toolbar button, or simply the Del key. Note that this will also delete all the cached headers and articles for the groups.

After retrieving the messages (and going offline) read them by:
using Switch view | Article (Ctrl+O),
double tapping on an entry,
pressing Enter key on an entry.
The following Go to movement options are available from the Edit menu for reading successive articles:
Next unread article (Ctrl+U)
Up to previous article (Shift+Ctrl+G)
Down to next article (Ctrl+G)
Tip: even simpler, these functions can also be performed with the single N, U and D keys.
In addition by using the Spacebar you can read through all unread messages in turn a screen at a time.
Close article (Ctrl+E), Esc or tapping on the X of the title bar will return you to the Header list view.
When messages have been read their entry changes from Bold to normal text. You can also manually change the message status by using the Mark as read (Ctrl+L) and Mark as unread (Ctrl+W) options in the Edit menu. These also work on multiple selected messages, or single messages can be toggled with the Spacebar.
The status bar at the bottom of the screen shows how many messages there are, how many are selected, and how many are unread.
