The program's main interface is panel based. You may have either one or two panels open at one time, and each of these can show a local or remote view.
Panels may be used for browsing files and folders and performing file operations.
If you have only remote panel open, then a local files panel can be opened by pressing Ctrl+F or selecting the option Show local panel under the View menu.
If both panels are open, Shift+Ctrl+S (the Swap panels option under the View menu) will swap the left and right panels over on the screen.
Tip: When two panels are open, the program allows you to easily tell which one is active (i.e. the one which you can immediately use to perform operations), by means of a highlight. The inactive panel will have its surrounding text (e.g. the disk selector button, the information at the bottom, etc.) displayed in white text, and the active panel will use black text.
In addition to the file navigation panels, RMRFTP allows you to open a third special panel. This will show you a log of all the standard FTP commands being sent to and received from, the remote machine. This can be toggled on/off using Shift+Ctrl+O or selecting the option Show log under the View menu.

Another extremely useful feature provided by the program is Bookmarks for the local panel.
These are similar to the bookmark feature provided by the System Shell, with the exception that you can define up to 20 bookmarks in this program (less in the unregistered version) instead of only one as in System.
Bookmarks can be added, deleted, viewed or changed by selecting the Edit
item situated on the Bookmarks cascade on the Edit menu. To quickly change to a bookmarked folder without resorting to this option, you can press Ctrl+B or tap on the
button in the bottom right corner of each panel. This will show you a list of all the currently defined bookmarks - simply select the location you wish to go to, and the panel will change to that folder.
To quickly add the current folder to the Bookmarks list, press Shift+Ctrl+B or select the Add current folder item situated on the Bookmarks cascade on the Edit menu

The program provides many little things to help make it easier to use, and to allow you to alter the panels and the way they appear, quickly and easily.
The feature to note is the Sort by option, which can be found on the Tools menu, or by pressing Ctrl+I. This allows you to change the order in which files and folders are sorted in the current panel. You can chose to sort files and folders based on any of the currently visible columns, and in either ascending (A..Z) or descending (Z..A) order.
You can also change the sort order by tapping the column titles. For example, if the files are currently sorted by date, you can sort them in ascending order by name by tapping once on the Name column. To sort in descending order by name, simply tap the Name column title a second time.
To close the current panel, you can tap on
in the top right corner of the panel. If only one panel is open, tapping that button will close the program.
Similarly, by clicking on the
button, you can change up one folder (e.g. if you are in C:\Accounts\May 1998\ then after tapping that button you would be in the folder C:\Accounts\). This mirrors the functionality of the button with a similar icon under Microsoft
Windows
Explorer.
To switch between two open panels via the keyboard only, you can use the Tab key.
Finally, the program allows you to quickly change the folder being viewed in the current panel by tapping once on the folder path bar (which is next to the
button at the top of the panel). This will produce a drop-down hierarchical tree view of all the folders and subfolders on the current disk. Simply select the one you wish to change to from this list.

This program offers several methods of selecting files. Once you have selected a file or files, you can then perform operations on them all (e.g. Copy).
Selected files are marked with a tick in the left most column on screen.
Select all (Ctrl+A)
This option which appears on the Edit menu will select all the files listed in the current panel.
Tip: You can also select all the files in a panel by tapping on the left most column title marked with a tick.
Using the pen
You can use the pen on it's own to select files by simply tapping once in the left most column next to the name of the file you wish to select. As stated above, once the file is selected it will have a tick next to it.
This method allows you to select any number of files in any order.
Using the pen and keys
The pen combined with the Shift key allows you to select a block of files in one go.
Holding down Shift and tapping on a file name will select it. If you keep Shift depressed and tap on another file name that file and all of the files in between the one you tapped first and the one you tapped last will be selected.
Using the keyboard
You can move about the list of file names with the arrow keys. The down arrow will move the cursor down, and the up arrow will move the cursor up. The left and right arrow keys will scroll the screen left and right if there is data to be seen (e.g. more text of a folder path or file comment inside a Zip archive).
If you hold down Shift whilst moving the cursor with the arrow keys, multiple files will be selected.
Tip: Two other options which are useful for selecting files can both be found on the Edit menu. Clear all selections (Shift+Ctrl+L) will remove any selections you have made. Invert selection (Shift+Ctrl+I) will reverse the status of any selections - i.e. any files which are currently selected will have their selection removed, and any files which are not currently selected will become selected.

The program provides some global preferences so you can configure it to work how you want. Use the Preferences menu option (Ctrl+K) to get access to a dialog consisting of the following two pages:
Local
On this page, the following four options are available:
Standard folder
Standard disk
Return to
Include ROM
Standard folder and Standard disk are the default values (i.e. the ones which will be initially offered) for the local path settings when you create a new FTP connection.
Return to allows you to specify what will happen when you launch a program or document from within the program. If this is set to System, then once the launched file is closed, you will be returned to the System shell. If it is set to RMRFTP, then the program will come back to the foreground once the file is closed.
Finally, Include ROM (if ticked) will add disk Z to all file selectors so that you can view files on, and copy files from, the internal ROM (Read Only Memory) of your machine. You cannot delete or directly alter the files on the ROM.
On this page, the following options are available:
Default transfer type
Email address
Default transfer type allows you to specify what data transfer method will be used for file transfer between local and remote machines. Unless you are an experienced user, it is recommended that you leave this set to Auto.
Email address is where you should enter your current email address. This is often required as the password for anonymous logins. If you don't want to set your real address, you can try connecting to sites using the default you@your-provider.com setting.

You can adjust several settings relating to the panels on screen. These can be found by pressing Shift+Ctrl+K to bring up the View Preferences dialog box.
The available settings are arranged into two pages as follows:
This page governs how the panels appear. There are five choices in this dialog:
Show grid lines
Vertical scroll bar
Horizontal scroll bar
File sizes in
Date column
The Grid lines option allows you to specify in which direction grid lines are drawn in the panel. These can help to visually separate the file and folder names.
Both of the scroll bar options let you set whether scroll bars appear always, never or automatically. If you set these to Off (i.e. so they never appear) you will have to use the keyboard to navigate.
File sizes in allows you to change how file sizes are displayed in the Size column of the screen. The available options are Bytes, Kilobytes and Megabytes.
Finally, using the Date column option you can set the program to display either the Time & date of files and folders, or Date only inside the Date colum
n of the panel.
Columns
With this page you can 'fine tune' the columns which are shown within each panel. These columns hold the various data about the files and folders you are browsing, such as name, date, attributes, etc.
You can mark any of the various columns visible or invisible so that the panel is showing only the information you really want. You can also set the width of all visible columns.
To do this, select the name of the column you wish to change using the Column choice box. Then move down and ensure Calculate width is set to Fixed. You will then be able to enter your desired with (in characters) inside the Width box.
Note: The Name column cannot be made invisible. It is the default column, and is therefore always on show.

Before you can carry out any file operations between your EPOC device and a remote computer, you need to enter some information about the FTP site you want to connect to and then establish the connection.
RMRFTP provides a Connection manager which stores details of sites you connect to frequently. This can be accessed with the Connect option on the Transfer menu (Shift+Ctrl+C). From this dialog you can use the buttons on the bottom to carry out the usual tasks such as adding, editing and deleting sites.
For sites which you do not intend to connect to often, RMRFTP provides a Quick connect (accessible from the Transfer menu or with Shift+Ctrl+Q) dialog where you can enter the information needed to quickly establish a connection.
When entering information for either type of connection you will be presented with a dialog where various settings are arranged into two pages as follows (note that some of these will be missing on the Quick connect dialog):
General
On this page you can specify:
Site name. Enter a name to identify this connection by in the Connect dialog, e.g. My Server.
Host address. Here you should enter the Internet name or IP address of the FTP server to connect to, e.g. ftp.my-isp.com or 123.456.789.000
Host type. By default, RMRFTP will automatically detect which type of server (host) it is connecting to. You may select a specific server type if problems occur when connecting.
Anonymous login. Tick this box if you require an anonymous connection. This means that "anonymous" will be sent to the server as the user name and your email address (default value set in Preferences) will be sent as the password.
Username & Password. You will only need to change these if you are not using an anonymous login. You should enter the correct username and password for the account which you are trying to connect to the server with.
Advanced
On this page you can specify:
Transfer type. This changes the method RMRFTP uses to transfer files.
Auto - RMRFTP determines which mode to use for each file transfer.
ASCII - forces all file transfers to be in ASCII (plain text) format.
Binary - forces all file transfers to be in binary mode.
Unless you encounter problems transferring files, you should leave this set to Auto.
Remote port. Do not change this setting unless your ISP (Internet Service Provider) tells you to.
Remote folder. If you are familiar with the server you're connecting to, you can specify a folder path here and RMRFTP will try to change to this folder on the remote host immediately after connecting.
Important: These remote parts are usualy separated by a forward slash '/', e.g. /folder/pub/files/
Local disk and Local folder. After connecting, RMRFTP will switch to this local folder in the local display panel (if the local panel is open).
Tip: For connections such as private web space, you should have received most of this information when you created an account with your ISP.

File operations refer to most of the functions available under the File, Edit and Transfer menus, which you can use to manipulate the files and folders on local and remote machines. These operations are:
Local operations
Open (Ctrl+O)
Create new > File (Ctrl+N)
Create new > Folder (Shift+Ctrl+N)
Delete (Ctrl+D)
Rename (Ctrl+R)
Properties (Ctrl+P)
Copy local (Ctrl+C)
Move local (Ctrl+V)
Note: These local operations will only be available if the Local panel is active.
Remote operations
Create new > Folder (Shift+Ctrl+N)
Delete (Ctrl+D)
Rename (Ctrl+R)
Upload (Shift+Ctrl+U)
Download (Shift+Ctrl+D)
Change folder (Shift+Ctrl+F)
All of these are very simple, and are as obvious as they sound. With the exception of Rename, all can be performed on multiple files and folders (see the Selecting files help topic).
Renaming files and folders can only be done on one file or folder at a time.
Open will cause RMRFTP to launch (i.e. open) the currently selected files. The same result can be achieved by pressing Enter when the files are selected, or by double tapping a file or selected files with the pen (Glidepoint on the Geofox-One).
The Upload and Download operations can also be carried out by dragging tagged files between panels (see the Dragging files help topic).
The Create new file and folder options both mirror those offered by the System screen. Create new file offers you a dialog where you can specify the name and parent application of a new file to be created in the current folder. Create new folder causes a new folder to be created under the current one. E.g. if you were browsing C:\Documents\ and used Create new folder to create 'Accounts' the resulting folder would be C:\Documents\Accounts\
Finally, Properties allows you to view and change various properties of local files and folders. You can, for example, alter attributes of the selected files and folders. Or you can alter the time and date of when files were last changed.

If two panels are open (see the Panels help topic) and you have one or more files and/or folders selected (see the Selecting files help topic), then you can drag the selected items from one panel to another to either copy or move them.
To begin dragging selected items, simply move the pen towards the idle panel (i.e. the one which is not active) - for example, if you have some files selected in the left panel, you would drag towards the right panel.
You should then see an icon appear where the pen is to signify the selected files.
To move the selected files, hold down the Shift key whilst you are dragging.
To copy the selected files, hold down the Ctrl key whilst you are dragging.
