  1. "DATA.app
  2. This function acts as a calculator of times and dates, by letting you add days, hours, minutes or seconds (or all four) to a start time and date.
  3. As with all of the program's other features, it is very simple to use. All you have to do is select a start date and time, enter the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds and select Add or Subtract for each. Then tap Calculate
  4. The appropriate results will then be calculated for you and presented in a new dialog box.
  5. This module can be used to calculate the fuel usage for a car journey. It supports distances in both Miles and Kilometres and volumes in UK Gallons, US Gallons or Litres.
  6. To use it, enter the value for the amount of fuel used and then select the units you require. For example, if you travelled 23 Miles, you would enter 23 and pick Miles.
  7. The same applies to the fuel used. If you used 2 UK Gallons you would enter 2 and pick UK Gallons from the Primary fuel units choice. 
  8. The Secondary fuel units option allows you to select the second set of fuel units you would like displayed in the results dialog.
  9. The results will be shown in the form of both Miles and Kilometres per each of your selected fuel units.

  17. This option (Shift+Ctrl+F) allows you to manually update the screen display when in the Information view. This is useful if you want to force the program to take into account any memory or battery changes on your System.
  18. Note: The program does support "auto-refresh", so you should not need to use this option too often, as when things change the screen should update itself automatically.
  19. The program supports a series of optional, but very useful, Data tables. This version currently comes with 7 such tables:
  20. Beaufort scale (Shift+Ctrl+B)
  21. Clothes sizes (Shift+Ctrl+C)
  22. Morse code (Shift+Ctrl+S)
  23. Paper sizes (Shift+Ctrl+P)
  24. Phonetic alphabet (Shift+Ctrl+O)
  25. Richter scale (Shift+Ctrl+R)
  26. Roman numerals (Shift+Ctrl+M)
  27. and more are planned for future releases.
  28. Since all of these are totally optional, you can decide which ones (if any) you want installed.
  29. Each table takes the form of a small file with a .tbl extension, and they reside in the folder
  30. \System\Apps\JWIN\Tables\
  31. You can remove any or all of these .tbl files depending on which you require by simply deleting them from this folder via the System screen. The program will automatically check and detect which tables are available for use.
  32. Each table consists of one or more data windows, and all of them can prove to be useful references when information is needed quickly.
  33. As with everything else in the program, they are very easy to use and can be navigated and closed by using either the pen or the keyboard to activate the appropriate buttons.
  34. These are small but useful functions for working out many different things. The ones currently listed under the Utils menu are as follows:
  35. Time calculator - See the Time calculator help topic for details
  36. Days to go - Calculates the number of days between two entered dates
  37. Day of week - Will tell you what day of the week a given date falls on
  38. Easter - Calculates the day that Easter Sunday falls on for a given year
  39. Fuel use - See the Fuel use help topic for details
  40. Journey - Estimates the time a journey will take (you must input the average speed and distance)
  41. TaxMan - See the TaxMan help topic for details
  42. Lottery numbers - Generates lottery numbers according to your own settings. You can vary the number of balls to generate and also the range of valid numbers (e.g. 1 to 49 are valid in the UK, and 6 balls are needed)
  43. All of the modules are very simple to use. All you have to do is input the relevant numbers/dates etc. and then tap the Calculate
  44.  button. A dialog will then be shown with the appropriate results.

  53. The hotkey is an extremely useful feature. It makes it possible to switch to the program quickly at any time from within any other application on your machine.
  54. However, if you can, try to assign the program a position on the Extras bar, on the first row, above one of the main icons. That way, whenever you press Ctrl+Icon, the program above the icon will either be switched to or opened (More details of this in your machine's own help file)
  55. The hotkey was added because there are only a limited number of spaces above these icons available and it is very easy to use them all up. Not every user will be able to (or want to) assign one to this program.
  56. Whenever the program is in the background (i.e. is not the current application), you can press the hotkey to bring it into the foreground (i.e. make it the current application). However, the hotkey can only be detected if you do not leave a menu or dialog box showing. This is the reason why a place directly above an icon is preferable.
  57. The hotkey is determined via the Preferences option and is initially set as Ctrl+Fn+J, but the key combination can use any letter.
  58. The Scribble pad view provides a blank pad on which you can jot down quick reminders or notes, results of conversions, etc. Just use the pen (or Glide-pad on the Geofox-One) in the same way as you would in, for example, the Sketch application or on a piece of paper.
  59. To switch between the Scribble pad and Information views, use Ctrl+Q. To switch to this view directly, you can use the shortcut key of Shift+Ctrl+Z.
  60. Your scribbles are automatically saved by the program so that they will still exist when you close the program or change the view back to Information.
  61. There are 3 pens available to you, as well as an eraser. You can switch between these via the Pens cascade on the View menu, or by using the View tools popup item on the toolbar.
  62. Tip: You can also switch quickly between pens 1 to 3 and the eraser by using the numbers 1,2,3 and 4 on the keyboard.
  63. The Pen preferences (Shift+Ctrl+K) menu item can be used to change the size and colour of each of the 3 pens. You can erase your entire scribble pad and get a new, blank page to draw on again by using the Clear pad (Shift+Ctrl+F) menu option.
  64. Tip: Clear pad can also be activated by pressing the Del key.
  65. The final two options worthy of note are Save scribble pad as and Open scribble pad. These allow you to save your scribble pad drawings as EPOC bitmaps and then load them in at a later date again. This is useful if you want to retain the notes you have made, but also want to make some more but have run out of space. The options are very simple to use - with Save scribble pad as you will be presented with a file selector dialog where you can enter the name you want to save the pad as and select the folder it should be saved in. Similarly, Open scribble pad provides a file selector with which you can navigate to and then select a previously saved scribble pad to open.
  66. Tip: Saved scribble pad files are standard EPOC bitmap files. This means you can, for example, open them in Sketch by using the Merge in option.
  67. The Author (Phil Spencer of Aylesbury, England) will not, under any circumstances, be held liable for any losses and/or damage to hardware and/or software and/or users as a direct or indirect result of using or attempting to use the "Just What I Need" (JWIN) software, or any files assosciated with it.

JWIN has been tested extensively by both the author and beta testers. The result being that all known bugs have been fixed and, as such, there should be no major problems with JWIN. However, if you do find any bugs or problems with it, please contact the author so that they can be fixed as soon as possible (see Contact details).
  69. The author will also not be held liable for any consequences of using conversion and/or utility results which may not be 100% accurate. Values are accurate as far as is known, but no guarantee can be provided. As above, if you do spot an inaccuracy, please get in touch and inform the author so it can be fixed!
  70. There are nine preferences that can be set in this program. They are:

  75. Save last used values

  78. Name for "Tax"
  79. "Tax" rate
  80. Firstly, the Hotkey. When you switch away from the program to the System screen or another application, you can get back to it very quickly (or "just when you need to") using the hotkey. The hotkey follows the pattern of Ctrl+Fn+Letter. The default is Ctrl+Fn+J, but with this option you can alter the letter to one of your own choosing. Please see the help topic The hotkey for more details on this option.
  81. Esc key action lets you set what action pressing the Esc key from within the program will have. You can set it to either do nothing, send the program to the background (i.e. the program will no longer be the current application), close the program or to refresh the screen (thus making sure the information displayed is accurate).
  82. Date display is, pretty much, self-explanatory. It allows you to change how date values are displayed within the program. This mainly applies to the features under the Utils menu. The available options mirror those offered by your machine in the Control Panel.
  83. 'Copy result' format allows you to determine what information is copied to the clipboard when you tick 'Copy result' in conversions dialogs (see Conversions topic for more information). If you set it to Result only then only the actual result is copied (e.g. '4.333098' may be placed on the clipboard). If set to Result with units then something like '4.333098 Inch' may be copied. Finally, with Complete equation set, the copied text read like '11.006069 Centimetre = 4.333098 Inch'.
  84. Save last used values is very useful. If this is ticked, the program creates a database that stores the values you last used for each conversion. The next time you carry out a conversion, the values you last used will be entered into the dialog straight away.
  85. Note: Saving last used values will slightly slow down the conversions. Sadly, this is unavoidable.
  86. Clear screen in background, if ticked, ensures that when you switch away from the program, its screen is totally cleared. This has the advantage that the program will use less memory when in the background, but the disadvantage that the screen takes slightly longer to redraw when you switch back to the program.
  87. Decimal places lets you govern the number of decimal places conversions are displayed to.
  88. Name for 
  89.  allows you to specify the local name for tax in your country. This will then be applied to the TaxMan module. The default is "VAT" (the UK's sales tax), but you may like to alter it to "Tax" or "GST" etc.
  90. Finally, the 
  91.  rate option allows you to specify the current 
  92.  rate in your own country. The default is 17.5% which is the current UK rate for VAT.

  95. These form the main functionality of the program. They allow you to convert between all common (and many, many uncommon) unit values. These include:
  96. Area (Ctrl+A)
  97. Currency (Ctrl+C)
  98. Energy (Ctrl+G)
  99. Length (Ctrl+L)
  100. Mass (Ctrl+M)
  101. Number types (Ctrl+N)
  102. Pressure (Ctrl+P)
  103. Speed (Ctrl+S)
  104. Temperature (Ctrl+R)
  105. Volume (Ctrl+V)
  106. Currency is a special case, and you can find out more details about it in the Currencies topic of this help file. 
  107. All the conversions follow the same basic interface and are, thus, very easy to use...
  108. First select the appropriate menu option for the category of conversion you want to make. In the dialog enter the Value to be converted and use the From choice box to specify the units you are converting from. In the To choice box select the units you want to convert to.
  109. Tips: Tap on the choice boxes or press Tab to see the whole list of choices. Alternatively, pressing the first letter of the unit you want provides fast access to it. E.g. pressing K on the To (or From) boxes while in MaO
  110. ss conversion, will take you straight to Kilograms. If there is more than one choice beginning with that letter, continuous presses cycle through them.
  111. Next, set the number of decimal places to which you want the answer shown. The default number of decimal places is set in Preferences but you can change it temporarily just for the current set of conversions by using the Decimals input box.
  112. Finally, if you wish to copy the result of the calculation to your machine's clipboard, check the Copy result box. The format of what will be copied can be set in Preferences.
  113. Once this is done, pressing Enter or tapping the Calculate
  114.  button will carry out the conversion. The dialog will redraw with the new result at the bottom. Pressing Ctrl+S or tapping the Swap values
  115.  button will swap round the current conversion units. This can be extremely useful when you want to switch between converting two particular units.
  116. Note: All of the values are pre-defined and cannot be altered. If you require other conversions, please don't hesitate to contact me (see the Contact details help topic for details).

  127. Currency conversions are slightly different to the others in the program. If you look at the Currency menu card (next to Convert on the menu), you will see 7 options:
  128. Conversion (Ctrl+C)

  130. Update (Ctrl+U)

  133. Sort names
  134. Information (Ctrl+I)
  135. Doing a currency conversion is easy. The dialog follows the same pattern and interface as all the other conversions outlined in the Conversions section of this help file. However, the other options require special attention.
  136. Add new lets you add your own currencies to the database. The maximum number of currencies currently allowed in the database is 100.
  137. Update enables you to update currencies which already exist in the database (to alter names and rates, for example). You can update single currencies by selecting the name and pressing Enter or tapping OK. Alternatively, you can update the whole database at once by pressing Ctrl+A or tapping on Update all
  138. In both the Add and Update dialog boxes, there is a checkbox called Inverted rate. When entering exchange rates, you normally specify how many units of foreign currency one unit of your home currency is worth. However, in some countries one unit of currency is very small. To save people from working with values like 0.00043... rates are sometimes given as the inverse of that value. If this applies to you, simply enter the inverted rate (i.e. the one which is greater than 1.0) and tick Inverted rate so the program can work out the correct values when you do conversions.
  139. Delete allows you to remove a currency from the database.
  140. Set Home lets you set the home currency (i.e. the one on which all the other rates are based). If you change the Home currency, the other rates will be automatically recalculated for you.
  141. Sort names allows you to sort the currency data file by name, in either ascending (A
  142. Z) or descending (Z
  143. A) order. This is useful when you add or update a lot of currencies, as changed and new currencies usually get added to the end of the list. Another useful option on the Sort names dialog is Home currency first. If this is checked, then the Home currency will always be placed as the first item in the currency file - this makes converting from the Home currency to a foreign one faster and easier.
  144. Finally, Information provides the option to view some details about any of the currencies in the database. These details include the time and date of the last update to each currency.

  147. at the start of each month. To save you entering and updating lots of currencies yourself, I provide a 'standard' Currency.dat file which is updated every month. This has all the most common currencies in it (currently around 50), and is more than adequate for most users. Installation instructions for these updates are available on my web site.

  152. This is a tax calculator which can be used to calculate tax on prices in two different ways.
  153. Firstly, you can calculate the price inclusive of tax - this is useful for times when a price is given without the tax already added on. Enter the price with no tax added to it and (if necessary) the currently applicable tax rate. Then select Tax excluded from the choice box, tap Calculate
  154.  and TaxMan will show you 3 things:
  155. Original price
  156. Tax payable
  157. New total price
  158. Secondly, you can calculate the price excluding tax - for times when a price is given with the tax already added on. Enter the price inclusive of tax and (if necessary) the current tax rate. Select Tax included from the choice box, tap Calculate
  159.  and TaxMan will again show you three things:
  160. Original price
  161. The tax that has been added
  162. What the price would be without tax added
  163. In both cases, pressing Enter or tapping Again
  164.  in the second dialog returns you to the first dialog, ready for another calculation.
  165. Note: The initial tax rate offered and the name TaxMan uses for the word "Tax" can be altered via Preferences. Once they have been set there, you should not need to alter them again (unless the rate changes). You can, however, temporarily alter the rate at the TaxMan input screen.

"Just What I Need" (or JWIN for short) is a utility designed to allow quick and easy access to the little things you always seem to need to know, but can never find. It was deliberately kept small in size so it can be left open all of the time, thus allowing swift access (that would not be possible with a larger program) to all its facts, figures and functions. In short, JWIN is "everything you need, at the tips of your fingers."
  290. With JWIN you can:
  291. Convert between all common (and many, many uncommon) unit values
  292. Convert between up to 100 currencies, which you can add, update and delete yourself
  293. Copy conversion results to the System clipboard for pasting into other applications
  294. Access useful information held in specially designed Data tables (for example Clothes sizes, Richter scale)
  295. Jot down results of calculations and general reminders on the Scribble pad
  296. Quickly cycle through several configurable pen and eraser sizes for use on the Scribble pad
  297. Perform several useful calculations with times/dates
  298. Work out fuel usage/consumption
  299. Work out prices before and after taxes for a given rate
  300. Work out estimated journey times
  301. Generate random numbers according to your specifications to play in your local lottery
