WAYour password must be at least five characters long. It is case-sensitive and must be entered identically each time it is used. The longer the password, the better protection you have.
However, there are no back doors in this program. If you lose your password, the only way back is to crack the RC4 encryption: a distinctly non-trivial task.
tAStart the program, then choose the file to be encrypted. If you select "delete source", the plaintext file will be deleted after encryption. Other options will have no effect. Then select Proceed.
Enter a password; this is case-sensitive, and the longer it is the better security is available.
The ciphertext file will be named as the plaintext file, with a & at the end.
ASelect the ciphertext file to be decrypted, any relevant options, and hit Proceed.
If you choose to launch the file, it will be started automatically once it has been decrypted. If you select "Recrypt after edit", FreeCrypt will remain in the background and re-encrypt the file once it is closed. In this case, "Delete original" ensures that the plaintext file is deleted.
If you select Launch but not Recrypt, or do not select Launch, Delete will remove the ciphertext file.
(AI should very much like to hear from anyone who uses this program and finds it helpful. Also, of course, any suggestions for improvements, bug reports, and so on.

FPeter Csutora has already produced an excellent shareware encryption program, Encrypt-It!, available from http://www.palmscape.com. A lot of functionality is common to both programs. Why should you look at FreeCrypt?
* It's free.Encrypt-It! requires a
12 (or more, depending on how you pay) registration fee.
* It uses RC4, rather than "a well-known encryption algorithm".
* All the source code is out in the open. If you want to confirm that I'm playing fair with you and haven't put in any back-doors to let me recover copies of encrypted files, or just made a mistake in the implementation so that the algorithm is weakened, all you need to do is read the source. I'm not saying that I think there are back doors or weaknesses in Encrypt-It!; I don't. But I can't check for myself. With the source of FreeCrypt available, you can be absolutely sure.
* The file-launch procedure doesn't need to be updated when new applications come out. It scans the Psion's discs for installed applications instead. This means that you can use FreeCrypt with any application that uses standard files (i.e. files with custom icons), including ones you've written yourself.
But it's not all in my favour:
* Encrypt-It! has been in development for longer and has been more thoroughly debugged.
* Encrypt-It!'s file-launch procedure is slightly faster than FreeCrypt's.
* FreeCrypt has no support for non-Psion files, such as text files, ZIP archives and VReader compressed text. It will still encrypt and decrypt them, of course, but it won't be able to launch the file automatically.
* FreeCrypt is a little slower than Encrypt-It!'s high-security mode, and doesn't offer a low-security mode.

HAOnce you have encrypted a file, you can edit it securely. Ensure that all three checkboxes are ticked in the Preferences screen, then just double-tap the file when you want to edit it. You will be prompted for a password; the file will be decrypted and launched, then re-encrypted (if necessary) once you have finished with it.
Welcome to FreeCrypt
This is a freeware encryption package using the secure RC4 algorithm. It offers high security and reasonable speed. Since source code is available, you can check its security for yourself.
General operation
Start the program from the extras bar. Select the file you wish to encrypt or decrypt, and any other options, then press the Proceed button.

I've written this program to the best of my abaility. However, I am not prepared to guarantee its suitabiity for anything other than taking up space on your Psion.
