The toolband is the blue / gradient bar either on the top or the side of most menus. Depending on the content that is shown in the menu there are several actions you can perform by tapping the corresponding icon in the toolband:
Creates a new object
Cuts the selected object (for later pasting into another menu)
Copies the selected object
Pastes the object you have previously copied or cut into the menu

The system tray on the right side of the taskbar provides access to vital system information provided by PlugIns.
PlugIns are small programs that monitor the system status (e.g. the power source, the time, free memory) and present it to the user (e.g. by changing the icon from a dead battery to an AC adapter).
Tap on the icon to perform the most appropriate action (e.g. toggle the remote link). Touch it a little longer or drag the pen upwards to open the context menu which contains all actions supported by the PlugIn. One of the menu entries should allow you to unload / disable the PlugIn. More information about the other options can be found in the PlugIn's documentation.
You can download new PlugIns from the collection on Start5's homepage
http://www.freepoc.org/start5.htm
After installing them like any other application they are automatically detected and loaded so there is no need to restart Start5 or load them manually.
If you want to write your own PlugIns you may grab the PlugIn Development Kit from the same location. PlugIns are written in OPL by implementing a special template.

`FWelcome to
Version 3, FreEPOC's Open Source Application Manager.
The main goals of this program are to help you launch, switch and close other applications and their documents (including URLs and folders) and to present vital system information. To reach this aim it provides you with a taskbar for switching applications, a start menu to launch everything from and an extensible PlugIn based system tray that gives instant acess to important information.
Start5 is an open system that can be adapted to your personal needs. The average user does not need to know how all this works and can use it right away with the default configuration. Power users will be pleased to note that (apart from changeing the usual preferences) all of Start5's menus can be completely modified, extended or reorganised either by a PlugIn or the user without relaunching Start5.
All objects in Start5 (e.g. a running application, a shortcut, a HTML file or your open "Budget" document) have a context menu that contains all actions / methods which can be performed on the object. Usually you acitvate an object by tapping its text and the context menu by tapping its icon. In the case of buttons that have no icons you have to tap on the sunken active button once more.
Development of Start5 (v3.0) took two years, one permanent and up to 3 assistant developers from FreEPOC. If you find the result usefull we would be grateful for a donation towards FreEPOC. See the last page in this help file for details.
If you are an EPOC developer you might consider grabbing the source code release from www.freepoc.org to adapt and improve Start5.

The taskbar shows all open documents / running applications (tasks). It comes to foreground if you touch the "System" silkscreen key (or a custom configured hotkey). If you touch System again Start5 switches to the System screen.
You may switch the current (active / foreground) task in one of the following ways:
by tapping on one of the other (non-sunken) task buttons
by using the left and right arrow / cursor keys to move through all tasks
by using the number keys from 1-0 to jump directly to the corresponding task
by using the Strg-Tab (or a custom configured hotkey) to cycle through all tasks. This also works when Start5 is in the background. A popup window appears that shows the last used application. Hold Strg and tap Tab repeatetly to move forward until the correct application is shown, then release Strg to jump to it.
You may close or hide the current task by opening its context menu in one of the following ways:
by using the corresponding number key from 1-0
by tapping the corresponding sunken button once again
