  10. This file gives a general overview of what AGeneDB is, how to install
  11. it, and some brief useage instructions. At the end of the file is
  12. information on how to register AGeneDB.

  15. Introduction
  16. ============
  17. AGeneDB is a genealogical database for the Psion series 5 palmtop
  18. computer. It allows you to view and record details about your family
  19. tree whilst on the move (in libraries, records departments etc..)
  20.  
  21. AGeneDB can swap data with applications on the PC that can accept
  22. genealogical databases in GedCom format.
  23.  
  24. The unregistered version of AGeneDB is not limited in any way, but if
  25. you register then I will consider any feature requests you make, and
  26. make your bug reports a higher priority.

  29. Installation.
  30. =============

  32. First unzip the file agenedb_beta_1_00.zip into a directory on your PC's
  33. (or Mac's) hard drive.
  34.  
  35. This zip file contains two files:
  36.  
  37.     readme.txt
  38.     agenedb_beta_1_04.sis
  39.  
  40. The first file is a small text file (The one you are reading right now).
  41.  
  42. If you double click on the .sis file, the Epoc Installer will start up
  43. and ask you if you to select a language to install. This is asking you
  44. which language version of AGeneDB you want to install. Select English,
  45. as AGeneDB is only available in English at the present time.
  46.  
  47. (the following step only happens if you have a compact flash card
  48. installed on your psion)
  49. When you press enter you will be asked to select a disk to install
  50. AGeneDB on. AGeneDB is not fussy about where you install it, so
  51. select any disk.

  53. Epoc Install will now close any files which you have open (a pain isn't
  54. it).
  55.  
  56. You are then asked if you really want to install this software.
  57.  
  58. If you select yes, the files for AGeneDB are copied to your psion.
  59.  
  60. Epoc Install then asks you if you want to install a sample GedCom file.
  61. If you want to see a ready made genealogical database then select yes,
  62. and you can import this into AGeneDB to see it working.

  64. If you already have your own family tree as a gedcom file then you
  65. probably don't want to install the sample.

  67. That's it, AGeneDB should now be installed!!

  72. Instructions
  73. ============
  74. When you first start AGeneDB you will see a dialog box asking you
  75. register. When you press the Enter key, the dialog will close and
  76. you will be presented with a blank screen.
  77. Don't Panic at only getting a blank screen.

  79. You can add an individual to the database by using the menus. Now
  80. press the menu key (or choose the top icon from the left hand side
  81. of the Psion's screen).

  83. This menu has the following choices
  84.     File
  85.     Person
  86.     Family
  87.     Tools
  88.  
  89. The Person & Family submenus allow you to add, edit and delete people
  90. (or families) from the database.
  91.  
  92. As soon as you add a person to the database, the person will appear
  93. on the screen, with "Not known" for the mother and father.
  94.  
  95. If you want to enter a families details then select the Family menu
  96. from the main menu bar, abd then select New, or select the New Family
  97. button on the toolbar. This will display a dialog in which you can
  98. select people for the mother and father from a list. You can also
  99. add new people to the database, by pressing the "New Person" button.
  100. To add children to the family, go to the "Children" Tab, and press the
  101. "Add Child" button.

  104. In case you hadn't noticed, I haven't quite finished this yet
  105. (But I'm working on it.)

  108. Registration
  109. ============

  111. This program is shareware - You can use it free for 30 days, but if
  112. you wish to continue using it after the 30 day period, you must
  113. register it.

  115. At the moment the only ways to register AGeneDB are to send me a
  116. cheque drawn from a UK bank, UK bank notes or a Eurocheque for 20
  117. pounds Sterling.

  119. If you send Bank notes then I cannot accept responsibility if they
  120. are lost in the post.
