/QThis menu option lets you see all or a selection of a player
s scores at one course together; and then performs some statistical calculations on these scores.
First you should type the short name of the course where the scores to be analysed were played. The Player
s Name is initially set to that of the registered user, but you can type in any name. It
s not necessary to type a name in full - just enough to differentiate it from other names on the file. Then you set the Start Date and the period to be analysed, but if you leave them to the default setting then all the player
s matches will be analysed. Normally the scores will be shown in date order, oldest first. But if you select Reverse Date Order, then the newest will appear first.
Only 5 scores can be seen at one time, but the window is actually large enough for 30 scores. The number in brackets beneath the word Eclectic tells you how many scores have been found. If there are more than 30, then only the bottom 30 can be seen, but any others are included in the subsequent analysis.
While the scores are being displayed on the screen, you can stop the search by pressing the S key.
Once the search is complete, you can use the up & down arrow keys and PgUp and PgDn to move around the list of scores. The left arrow key takes you to the top of the list, while the right arrow key takes you to the bottom. You can also click on the bottom two icons in the toolbar with the pointer, or on the cut/paste and infra red buttons on the sidebar
In the list of scores, the coding is as follows:
n A No Return
. Hole not played
> More than 9 shots
underline A Par
italic A Birdie
reverse An Eagle or better
The Eclectic line of scores at the top is the best result for each hole.
If you press the Space Bar four times, or click on the top Stats icon in the toolbar with the pointer, you will rotate between this screen and three screens of analysis based on the scores shown.
Alternatively in order to return to the Main Menu screen, press the Esc key or click on the - button on the sidebar.
Averages
This first screen of analysis shows the average number of strokes at each hole and the total of these averages. The figure in the bottom right hand corner is the difference between this total and the Par for the course.
Along the bottom is shown the average number of strokes taken at all the Par 3, Par 4 & Par 5 holes.
GolfCard Index
The next screen of analysis shows on the left of the screen a breakdown of the performance at every hole. This breakdown is used to calculate the player
s GolfCard Index, shown in the top right hand corner.
The GolfCard Index is a useful way to measure a player
s performance as an alternative to the Handicap. The target figure for the GolfCard Index is 300. A player who hits a par at every hole will achieve this figure. You should use the Index to compare your own performance from one period to the next, or to compare your own performance with that of another player.
In the bottom right hand corner of the screen is the Stroke Index display. In the second row beneath the number of the hole is the official stroke index, while the third row shows the personal stroke index for the player under analysis. This is calculated by comparing the average at each hole with the par. So the hole with a personal stroke index of 1 will be the hole where the difference between the average and par is greatest.
Length
The final screen of analysis is a graph which maps the length of each hole against the average number of shots at that hole, and then calculates the best-fit straight line.
Where a number of entries on the graph coincide it is hard to read the number of the hole and we apologise for this. However the value in this graph is looking for holes which are above and below the line. These are the holes that are particularly difficult or easy for the player under analysis.
For the technically minded, the formula for the best-fit regression line is also shown at the bottom of the screen. This is of the type:
Average Shots(hole n) =
X + Distance(hole n) / Y
For some players, X can be regarded as a measure of skill around the green, while Y is a measure of how far the player strikes the ball off the tee and the fairway.
The success of the best-fit straight line is shown as a percentage. A figure of 90% or more is good, while anything less than about 70% is poor.
HChoose this menu option when you want to see the scores in a particular match, and also to record further information about the match relating to Handicap calculations.
In the Choose Match form which appears you can either enter the event number or some search text. If you know the event number then this is the quickest way to find a particular match. (See File - Load Match in the Main Menu Reference section of the GolfCard Help file for more details on using the search text.)
Each player
s scores are presented in one line preceded by his or her initials. A total is shown only if a valid score exists for each one of the 18 holes. The figures in the last column are the match result - points for Stableford, holes for Match Play, net score for Stroke Play.
Press the tab key three times or click on the Info icon at the top of the toolbar to view all the match information in the top window.
Press the left arrow key to view the match saved before the one currently shown on the screen. The right arrow key displays the match saved next. (Alternatively click on the + and - buttons on the sidebar.)
Press S or click on the handicap icon in the toolbar to record additional information about handicapping. This reveals the Handicap Event form. It is here that you say that a match counts for handicap. If there
s no entry on the Handicap Event form, then the system assumes that the match does not count for handicap.
For a gentleman you need to enter the Competition Scratch Score (CSS), and for a lady you need to enter the LGU Scratch Score. Possibly enter both if there is a player of each sex in the match.
Some events are regarded as non-counting for handicap purposes, where handicaps can only reduce. To specify that an event is non-counting, go to the relevant line and press the right arrow key.
When the information is complete press Enter. To cancel, just press the Esc key.
To clear figures entered earlier, change the CSS and/or SS to zero and press Enter.
Tip: If you are recording a competition played by a group of people in more than one match, then set the same Event Number for all the matches when saving them. If you do this, then you will only need to record the CSS or SS once for one of the matches (since this information is indexed against the event number).
FGolfCard will calculate initial and ongoing CONGU handicaps in accordance with the published rules for use in the UK. If there is any aspect of these rules that you feel GolfCard cannot cope with, then please contact us (preferably by email).
For ladies, GolfCard will calculate the initial and the ongoing Exact handicap as specified in the new LGU system implemented in the UK in Feb 1998. It does not however calculate the ongoing Playing handicap.
These calculations can be done for any player, not just for the registered user. For players other than the registered user it will be necessary to keep a record separately (in Data perhaps) of their start date and start exact handicap.
A Handicap Record Sheet can also be printed on request. This printed version of the Handicap Record Sheet can cope with up to 40 separate handicap events. If this number is exceeded then you need to revise the start date and start handicap to a later date in order to successfully print the Handicap Record Sheet.
A match saved with GolfCard will only count for handicap if the following conditions apply:
1. A score is registered for all 18 holes, even if it is a No Return.
2. The match format is either Stroke Play, Stableford (not foursomes or better ball), or Bogey/Par.
3. For Stableford or Bogey/Par matches a gentleman must play off his correct handicap, as calculated by GolfCard Analyst; and the stroke allowance must be equal to his full handicap.
4. There is an entry on the Handicap Event form for this particular match. For a gentleman there must be an entry for the Competition Scratch Score(CSS); while for a lady there must be an entry for the LGU Scratch Score. (See the View Match section for details of the Handicap Event form.)
|IWith this menu option you can calculate a male handicap under the CONGU system, as operated by golf clubs throughout the British Isles. The full handicap history can be shown on the screen or printed out.
Procedure
Having chosen this menu option, enter the player
s name, the starting date for the handicap calculations and his exact handicap to 1 decimal place at the starting date. Also click with the pointer on the
Use Stableford Adjustment
box if you wish to apply this rule to Stroke Play competition results. (This basically says that the worst result at any hole is a net double bogey, which would give you zero points if the competition had been Stableford.)
Only 5 handicap events can be seen at one time, but the window is actually large enough for 30 events. The number in brackets beneath the word CONGU tells you how many events have been included. If there are more than 30, then only the bottom 30 can be seen.

Medal, full handicap Stableford and full handicap Bogey/Par events are all eligible for handicap purposes. Where a result is marked n/c beside the CSS, the event is Non-Counting and handicaps can only improve. Should the word Inconsistent appear for an event, then the stroke allowance used to calculate the player
s result in the event does not equal his calculated playing handicap at that point.
If the Stableford Adjustment rule has changed the score in a Medal competition, then the letters
will appear after the Medal score.
In order to print the Handicap Record Sheet, then click on the Print icon in the toolbar with the pointer, or press the Menu key, or press Ctrl+P.
Press the Esc key to return to the main screen or click on the - button on the sidebar. If the handicap calculation is for the registered user, then you have the option to save the result. If saved, then the handicap will be automatically entered when scoring a new match, and the start date and start handicap will be remembered next time the handicap calculation is done.
DWith this menu option you can calculate an initial male handicap under the CONGU system, as operated by golf clubs throughout the British Isles.
First enter the player
s name and the start date. The latter is the date of the first match score to be used in the calculation.
Only matches where a Competition Scratch Score is recorded are used. See View Match for details of how to do this. The figure that you enter for the CSS is not actually used in the calculation. (Entering the CSS is merely a device to indicate which matches on file are to be used in the calculation.)
The calculation of the initial handicap is based on the first three complete rounds on or after the start date for the chosen player. Any score for a hole that is more than 2 over par is amended to 2 over par and is displayed in reverse video.
The rounds can be at any course or courses, but it is essential that the Standard Scratch Score is recorded for each of them. (You can set the SS by scoring a match with GolfCard at the course and using the Course Name menu option followed by the Save Course menu option.)
The initial handicap is calculated as the best of the three adjusted total scores less the Standard Scratch, with a maximum of 28.
@With this menu option you can calculate an Exact Handicap under the LGU system, as operated by golf clubs throughout the British Isles. The full handicap history can be shown on the screen or printed out.
Note the emphasis on the word exact. GolfCard Analyst does not attempt to calculate the Playing Handicap. Broadly speaking a player
s Playing Handicap changes on the 8th day of each month, and is equal to the Exact Handicap at the end of the previous month rounded to the nearest whole number (0.5 is rounded upwards). However this simple rule is complicated by a system of Immediate Reductions to Playing Handicaps. Such a reduction arises when one or a string of good results in a month would reduce the player
s handicap by at least 2 according to a published table.
The history of the Exact Handicap is not influenced by Immediate Reductions. But note that each match must be recorded with the correct Playing Handicap as advised by the Handicap Secretary, and the stroke allowance must always equal the full Playing Handicap.

The initial handicap is calculated as the best of the three scores less the LGU Scratch Score, with a maximum of 45. The LGU Scratch Score used is always the one recorded on the Handicap Event form.
CThe handicap committee can change a player
s handicap if they think that the handicap doesn
t reflect his or her current playing ability.
To enter such a change, select Handicap Adjustment from the Handicap menu and then either Gent CONGU or Lady LGU from the sub-menu.
In either case, simply enter the player
s name, the effective date of the revision, and the new handicap. There
s also space for a comment if you wish.
Any such entry will then appear in the handicap calculations at the appropriate date.
To view all such adjustments on file, select
View existing adjustments
from the Handicap Adjustment sub-menu, and then keep pressing the Enter key to run through the entries. Any of the existing adjustments can be deleted by clicking on the Delete button with the pointer.
