right to turn 'em down!).
DATA PROTECTION ACT
AThere are eight main "Wards" on WardFive. Each Ward contains 20 beds. A patient's details can be entered onto a particular bed space. There are two additional holding areas - Admissions & Discharges.
This means that there is a maximum capacity of 200 patients (at present). If necessary, extra patients can be incorporated in separate files.
This limitation will remain in place for the unregistered version, but may be extended for registered users in the future.
CI have tried very hard to make sure that WardFive is bug-free. No loss of data has been reported during the use of WardFive so far, and everything seems to work acceptably.
However...
WardFive is issued as ShareWare without *any* guarantees or warranties *whatsoever*. By installing WardFive on your Psion you have accepted these terms, as well as the terms below. No responsibility can be taken by me for any loss or corruption of data incurred by the use of this program.
It is up to the user to ensure that their use of this software complies with Data Protection regulations within their country or state.
No responsibility can be taken by me for any clinical decisions taken on the basis of information contained in WardFive. You're the doctor - you make the call.
.CDatabases come and go. Any darn fool can keep a list of his/her patients in "Data", and think that's cool.
Fair enough - it's adequate. However, that's not the way the human brain works. The human brain works by visualisation. We don't reason using lists - we reason by simulating scenarios.
WardFive is not intended to replace your brain.
The key lies in the way the data is organised and presented - on a Ward basis.
When you enter patient details, you choose a "bed" wherein to place your patient. That patient will stay there while you go off and do other things.
So you have a visual reminder of where to find your patient, and I assert that that makes it easier for your brain to recall the correct information.
I don't want WardFive to reduce a doctor's brainwork - merely to streamline it and enhance it.
BThis facility allows you to see which patients have entries in the current Data Field (the Active Field). The data fields are:
D: Diagnosis & History
M: Medications
I: Investigations
C: Comments & To-Do
in addition there are 2 extra fields:
Seen/Not Seen
Tagged
You can navigate through the entries in the active list, and clear the data field if everything has been sorted out.
This is particularly useful if you place outstanding tasks in the "Comments & To-Do" field, as you will have an automatic list of all outstanding jobs.
AWardFive and all associated files remain copyright Dr Shane McKee 1998 except where stated otherwise. You may distribute these files on the condition that they are distributed as a package and not separately. You may not charge any fee for so doing, nor may you alter any of the files.
In addition, attempting to hack the registration algorithm, reverse translation or reverse engineering of WardFive are expressly forbidden.
n also Discharge or Delete all the currently-tagged patients. Be very sure you want to do this before proceeding!
SCWelcome to WardFive, the patient information manager for the Psion Series 5.
WardFive's unique intuitive layout means that for the first time there is a Patient Information Manager that is easier than using paper! No other product for this or any other palmtop comes close.
Generate handover lists, GP letters, database outputs. Manage up to 3600 patients on 60 wards! (No - you'll not want to do that!)
Have patient details at your fingertips. Throw away your little spiral-bound ward round book. Keep your brain though - you'll need that.
WardFive's design has been carefully chosen to maximise your effectiveness as a doctor. The user interface is Psion-friendly, allowing ease of use, and brain-friendly, using those visuo-spatial regions of the brain that all other databases ignore.
Welcome to the future of hand-held medical computing.

AFind an empty "bed", then press <Enter>. You will be offered a dialog into which you may enter the patient's information.
You will notice that WardFive allows you to define default patient details, which can help save time.
If you press <Enter> over an occupied bed, you will be able to edit that patient's details.
You can achieve the same effect by clicking on the current bed.

AI need to stress this.
If you use WardFive in the UK, or even if you use ANY database or whatever to store patient details, then the Data Protection Act applies to you.
You may be covered by your employer (ie the Trust), but you must speak to your Data Protection Officer to make sure that you are complying with the Law.
Please do make sure you do this, as I cannot be held responsible in any way for any breaches, intentional or inadvertent, that any user of WardFive may make of this Law.
AYou can alter the hospital settings to suit your own unit.
You can set up the names of:
Consultants
Wards
Admission types
Press Ctrl-Q in the main WardFive screen to access this.
Please note that in WardFive, Consultants are "attached" to Wards, therefore when you edit the details of one you are able to edit the details of the other. This does not necessarily mean that all patients in a particular ward must belong to that consultant.
BThere are several ways to move around WardFive.
To move to a particular "bed" within a "Ward", use the cursor keys, or use the pointer.
Use Ctrl-Left / Ctrl-Right to move to the previous / next occupied bed within a ward.
Use Fn-Left / Fn-Right to move to the first / last ward column.
To move between wards:
Move to the previous / next ward by pressing Fn-Up / Fn-Down, or use the pointer to click the buttons either side of the ward name on the top toolbar.
Alternatively, click the ward name, and you will be offered a selection of all wards. Just click on the one you want.
You can also access wards by using the hot-keys: 1 to 8 for the first 8 wards, 9 for Discharges, 0 for Admissions, A to Y for wards 11 to 35, and Shift-A to Shift-Y for 36 to 60.
BOne of WardFive's strongest features is the ability to move patients around, which enables you to keep track of them much more easily. In fact, the original program for the Series 3c was called "WardRound", as its primary aim was to assist patient information presentation on hospital rounds.
To "pick up" a patient, either press the Spacebar, or click the "Pick up patient button" at the top of the screen. Simply repeat the procedure to drop the patient into an empty bed. You can press <Esc> to cancel the pickup.
You can move patients between wards, or carry them to the DISCHARGES or ADMISSIONS areas.
WardFive allows you to pick up all Tagged patients (Ctrl-Shift-P), and move them to the current ward.
BWardFive allows you to keep track of which of your patients you have seen recently. If you have sorted out a patient on a particular day, click on the "bed" and mark them as "Seen" (second box down, top right-hand corner).
When you go to the Active List from the Seen/Not Seen view, it will list all the patients still remaining to be "Seen".
When you start your rounds the next day, choose "Mark all Unseen" from the Menu to reset all the patients to "NOT SEEN"
If you wish to mark all patients "SEEN", you can also do this from the Menu.
AIf you want to mark a patient for later attention, you can "tag" them. You can then view them in the "Active List".
To tag a patient, click on the upper box in the patient information window.
You can opt to "Tag all" patients who meet certain criteria, eg all belonging to a particular consultant, all in a particular ward, etc. Select "Tag all" from the Multi-Patient option on the Menu.
QDWardFive is Shareware. This means that it is supplied to you free of charge for the purposes of evaluation over a period of 30 days. If you like WardFive, and wish to continue using it, you must register.

CHi! Congratulations on your (hopefully successful) installation of WardFive on your Psion Series 5.
WardFive is a patient information manager and rounds assistant, specifically designed to help you keep track of your patients with its unique Ward-based relational layout.
WardFive helps your brain instead of replacing it!
Please make sure that you read all the attached documentation carefully. WardFive is issued subject to the condition that you have read and accepted the Copyright and Disclaimer terms.
WardFive is Shareware. It is not free software. It is the culmination of hundreds of hours of programming and testing. If you like WardFive and wish to keep using it, you must register.
Registration is only a mere UKP
25. Not much for a program that will probably help you maximise your clinical effectiveness. You may even be able to claim the registration fee back from your Trust board as expenses.
See "Registration" for details.
sEGo to your Psion's "System" Screen (click the orange button at the bottom left of the screen).
Press "Menu". Go to Tools. Go to Preferences. Make sure "Show System Folder" is selected. Press Enter.
Now close the current folder (move to the top left in the System screen, and select "Close"), and keep doing this until you can't go any further. This means you are in the Root Folder.
There is a folder called "System".
(If you are installing on the D: drive (ie if you have a Compact Flash memory card), this folder may not exist, and you will have to create it. Choose "Create new" -> "Folder" from the File menu. Call it "System".)
Open that folder, and then go into the "Apps" folder. (If "Apps" does not exist, create it in the same way as above).
Now create a new folder called WardFive.
Using PsiWin (or whatever), copy all WardFive's files into this folder.
Press the "Extras" bar a couple of times to make sure that everything has worked. You should see a 5-snake icon named "WardFive". Don't click on it yet!!
There is one file just called "WardFive", and on your Psion (if you've installed correctly), it will come up as a little 5-snake icon.
Copy this file (Ctrl-C), and go to the \Documents folder, then press Ctrl-V to paste it in. Now click on this file to open it, and you should be ready to go!
Any problems with installation, please let me know:
shane@dna1.dnet.co.uk
BThe Admissions buffer is a holding area for patients (a bit similar to beds in the corridor!) prior to finding them a space on the ward. As in the Discharges area, patients are listed in alphabetical order, and not in the order of admission.
To move a patient to a bed on the wards, pick them up (SPACE) and move them to the free bed, then press SPACE to drop them.
To move all the patients in Admissions to a particular ward (registered version only), Select Multi-Tag from the toolbar, then select current Ward from the Tag options. Pick up tagged using Shift-Ctrl-P (or the menu).
Now move to your chosen ward, and press the <Spacebar> to drop the patients into that ward.
AI have tried very hard to remove all bugs from WardFive. Also, my Beta-testers have been working hard to crash my program in as many ugly ways as possible. There's always the chance something has slipped through the net.
Please let me know if you find any bugs:
shane@dna1.dnet.co.uk
*BYou can delete a patient simply by pressing <Del>. This will offer you a dialog asking whether you want to delete the patient altogether, or move the patient to the DISCHARGE area.
When a patient moves to DISCHARGES, the Discharge Date field is set. If you subsequently move a patient back to the wards, they are "Readmitted", and the admission date field is updated.
These activities will also generate an automatic patient Event.
You can also Discharge or Delete all the currently-tagged patients. Be very sure you want to do this before proceeding!
'BThere are four main data fields:
Diagnosis & History
Medications & Allergies
Investigations
Comments & To-Do,
one of which can be "active" depending on which is displayed in the field button (top right of the screen). In addition, there are flags for whether a patient is "tagged" or has been "seen" recently.
Information in these fields can be edited by pressing <Tab> or by clicking the Patient Window.
The status tabs in the Patient Window tells you which fields contain entries. Grey means empty. Black means there is information in that field.
FAWardFive allows you to alter the width of the Ward Window, the number of columns displayed, the style for all entries with data in the current "Active Field", and also the fonts for display of information.
You can access this by pressing Ctrl-Z or by clicking the zoom button on the side-menu (just above the System button).
PEWardFive allows you to enter "Events" on patients.
An Event is a labelled and dated memo, and you can attach up to 200 of these to each patient. They may represent updates, tests, notes, etc.
To create a patient event, go to the Events view, and press <Tab>. You will be shown a Dialog asking whether you wish to attach a blank event, or base a new event on a previously-defined template.
You can create and edit template events.
When you select your desired event type, you can either just edit the "Outcome", or enter the "Profile" editor.
Although not all events will necessarily be "Profiles", you can enter Profile type information for any of them. You can choose whether you want this information to be transferred to the "Outcome" field by pressing Ctrl-O in the Profile Editor dialog.
Some actions in the main WardFive view will generate Automatic Events, such as moving between wards, discharges, etc. It's a good idea to keep an eye on each patient's events, and tidy them up periodically.
If you only want to display certain specific events, you can Apply the Events Filter. This allows you to choose the date interval, type, and contents of the events you would like displayed. Press Ctrl-F or select from the toolbar.
To remove the filter, click the button again.
Events can be printed out in the GP letters, but not in the Handover list.
$AWardFive allows you to find patients on the basis of a string search. All "found" patients are tagged, and can be viewed from the Active List in "Tag" mode.
This facility is a little basic at present, but if enough people register, I may be persuaded to make it a little more sophisticated.

CBelow is the text for a suggested GP letter template. You can copy this text, Paste it into a Word document, then Export text file from Word to W5GPL1.txt (or whatever). Then you can use that file as a template letter. It's best of you put the template file in the same directory as your WardFive patient file.
(See GP letter fields for more explanation).
Here follows the sample text:
-----------------------
[[dat]]
Dear Dr,
Re: [[pat]]: DoB: [[dob]], Hosp No: [[hno]]:
This [[age]] old [[sex]] patient was admitted on [[adm]] to our hospital under the care of [[con]].
oBYou can use the information on a patient to generate a proto-GP letter. This text file may then be imported into a Word file, edited (this is important), and printed out and then sent to your local friendly GP!
A powerful feature of WardFive is that it allows you to define your own GP letter templates in the form of a text file. The file must include pointers to the information you require, and WardFive will fill in the details.
This means you can even create HTML files and view them in Web! That way you can attach formatting information to the letters, by copying the text from Web into Word!
Amazing, isn't it??

^BWardFive's unique ward layout allows you to see exactly where your patients are, and therefore is a bit like having a Virtual Ward.
WardFive is the most sophisticated Patient Information Manager ever written for the Psion Series 5, and is also the easiest to use. Other PIMs are available, but they're all flat-file and don't have much advantage over the standard Data application on the Series 5. WardFive is different.
WardFive has 60 wards, with 60 patients in each ward! The first 10 wards are accessible by using the hotkeys 1 to 0. To get to the other wards, you need to use the Navigation Window.
