  1. PrintIt! 2 for Windows CD Version README - December 1997
  2. ========================================================
  3. Network Printing:
  4.  
  5. If you have problems printing to Networked printers, change your print settings in 
  6. Control Panel,Printers, (Select Your Printer), Properties, Graphics.  Try selecting,
  7. Vector or Raster.  You also may want to enable 'Page Protect'.
  8.  
  9. Installation:
  10.  
  11. To install and run PrintIt! 2 your computer setup must meet
  12. certain requirements. Refer to Page 2 of the PrintIt! 2 Guide
  13. for further details. When you are sure that your computer setup
  14. meets these requirements, you can install PrintIt! by
  15. following the steps below:
  16.  
  17. 1.  Run Windows and maximize the Program Manager.
  18.  
  19. 2.  Insert the PrintIt! CD into your CD-ROM drive.
  20.  
  21. 3.  Select Run from the File menu of Program Manager. The Run
  22.     dialog is displayed.
  23.  
  24. 4.  Enter D:\INSTALL in the Command Line box and click on OK.
  25.  
  26.     If your CD-ROM drive is represented by a letter other
  27.     than D:, substitute it accordingly in the command above.
  28.  
  29. 5.  Follow the instructions on screen to complete the
  30.     installation. The different CD installation options are 
  31.     explained in the section below. A dialog will be displayed for 
  32.     you to choose the options that you want to install. An option 
  33.     is selected when the adjacent box is checked.
  34.  
  35. At the end of the installation, you are asked to select or create
  36. a program group where you would like to place the Pressworks
  37. program icons.
  38.  
  39.  
  40. CD Installation Options
  41. =======================
  42.  
  43. The CD version of PrintIt! 2 can be installed in several ways. If 
  44. available hard disk space is limited, you can choose to run some or 
  45. all components from the CD instead. Read the descriptions below to 
  46. find the option that suits you:
  47.  
  48. 1.  Standalone
  49.     This is the recommended option, and will copy all the components
  50.     you choose to your hard disk. Components not selected will not 
  51.     be available, and the CD will not be required after installation.
  52.  
  53.     This option has the highest performance, but requires most free
  54.     hard disk space if all options are installed.
  55.  
  56. 2.  Partial
  57.     Allows you to install selected components to your hard disk, and
  58.     access other components from the CD. For example you could install the 
  59.     
  60.     Reading from a CD-ROM drive is considerably slower than reading
  61.     from a hard disk drive, so components not chosen will not run as 
  62.     quickly. It is very strongly recommended that at least the 
  63.     PrintIt! program is installed. 
  64.  
  65. 3.  CD
  66.     This option runs the entire program from the CD, and therefore 
  67.     uses the least hard disk space. Some hard disk space is required 
  68.     for system files used by PrintIt!. This option has the slowest 
  69.     performance and should only be used if hard disk space is very 
  70.     limited.
  71.  
  72.     It is necessary to leave the CD in the CD-ROM drive at all times
  73.     while running this version.
  74.     
  75. Are you upgrading?
  76. ==================
  77.  
  78. Read this section if you are upgrading from an earlier version of
  79. Pressworks.
  80.  
  81. When you install PrintIt! 2 it will not overwrite your existing
  82. copy of PrintIt!. If you decide to delete your old copy of
  83. Pressworks, make sure that you don't delete any documents and
  84. templates that you want to keep. (These files may be located in
  85. your old PrintIt! directory. If you delete this directory
  86. without first moving your files to another location, you will
  87. lose your files.)
  88.  
  89. We suggest that you move these files from your old \PrintIt!
  90. directory to the \Galaxy\PrintIt! directory that is created when you
  91. install PrintIt! 2. To move the files, follow the steps below:
  92.  
  93. 1.     Start the Windows File Manager by double-clicking the File
  94.     Manager program icon in the Windows Main program group.
  95.  
  96. 2.     Open your old \PrintIt! directory and select the files you
  97.     want to move.
  98.  
  99. 3.     Drag the files to your new \Galaxy\PrintIt! directory and drop
  100.     them over the subdirectory into which you want to store
  101.     them.
  102.  
  103. You can then go ahead and delete your old \PrintIt! directory;
  104. your documents and templates are safely stored for future use
  105. with your new version of PrintIt!.
  106.  
  107. NOTE: For full details of moving files using the Windows File
  108. Manager, refer to your Microsoft Windows User's guide.

  111. Where to begin
  112. ==============
  113.  
  114. For an introduction to Pressworks we suggest that you work
  115. through the tutorials provided in the Pressworks 2 Guide.  The
  116. online Help provides detailed information on every feature in
  117. Pressworks - it is there to help you get the most out of 
  118. Pressworks - simply press F1.
  119.  
  120.  
  121. Loading Pressworks 1, 1st Press or Timeworks Publisher files
  122. ============================================================
  123.  
  124. DTP files created by all versions of Pressworks, 1st Press and
  125. Timeworks Publisher can be loaded into Pressworks 2, however 
  126. files saved by Pressworks 2 cannot be loaded into these older
  127. programs.
  128.  
  129. When you load an old document into Pressworks 2 it should appear
  130. much the same as it did before, however there are a few points of
  131. difference you should note:
  132.  
  133. - Loading large files created by versions earlier than
  134. Pressworks 1.1 may take a lot longer than it did before, because
  135. the program has to do a lot of work converting the file. Once you
  136. have saved the file in Pressworks 2 it should be quicker to load.
  137.  
  138. - Tabs are treated differently in Pressworks 2 from the way they
  139. were in earlier versions. Previously you could only use tabs in a
  140. paragraph with the 'table' alignment option, with the single
  141. exception that you could also use a tab to align the first line
  142. of a left aligned paragraph with the left indent rather than the
  143. first line indent. In Pressworks 2 the 'table' alignment option
  144. has been removed and tabs can be used in any left aligned
  145. paragraph. A tab now always aligns text with the next tab stop to
  146. the right, and does not treat the left indent as a tab stop. The
  147. upshot of all this is that if you have used tabs in your old
  148. documents you may find that the text does not line up in quite
  149. the same way as it did before. This is quite easy to correct, as
  150. Pressworks now has a 'tab bar' which makes tab stops much easier
  151. to adjust.

  153. - Pressworks 2 handles leading (line spacing) in a slightly
  154. different way to earlier versions. You can now specify 'relative
  155. leading' which means that the spacing between lines is a fixed
  156. percentage of the point size of the text on the lines. This makes
  157. adjusting the point size of text easier because the leading
  158. changes accordingly. The consequence of this change is that when
  159. you load an old file that contains text that is larger or smaller
  160. than the point size set in the paragraph style you will find that
  161. the leading of the text is not the same as it was before. This
  162. often results in the text being slightly more spaced out and can
  163. mean that it no longer fits in the frames you have defined. To
  164. solve this problem you can either change the leading in the
  165. paragraph style (affecting all paragraphs that have that style)
  166. or change the leading for a particular paragraph by placing the
  167. text cursor in it and selecting 'Spacing' from the 'Text' menu.
  168.

  170. Pressworks 2 and Designworks 2.02 or earlier 
  171. ============================================
  172.  
  173. Read this section if you use both Pressworks 2 and
  174. Designworks 2.02 or earlier. 
  175.  
  176. (Designworks is a separate drawing and illustration application
  177. for Windows developed by GST Technology Ltd. For further

  181. When you install Pressworks 2, the version of PANTONE that is
  182. installed is more recent than that supplied with Designworks 2.02
  183. or earlier. If you run Pressworks and Designworks together the
  184. different PANTONE versions may conflict.
  185.  
  186. If you install Pressworks 2 after you install Designworks you
  187. will not have a problem. However, if you install Designworks
  188. after you install Pressworks 2 you must run the Pressworks 2
  189. installation again.
  190.  
  191. NOTE: This is only applicable to Designworks 2.02 or earlier;
  192. later versions of Designworks will use the new version of
  193. PANTONE.
  194.  
  195.  
  196. Pressworks 2 and Designworks OLE2 handler
  197. =========================================
  198.  
  199. If you have Designworks 2 or later installed, when you install
  200. Pressworks 2 an OLE2 handler will be installed into your
  201. Designworks directory.  This OLE2 handler will speed up the
  202. display of Designworks objects that you link or embed into other
  203. OLE applications. 
  204.  
  205. If you install Designworks after you install Pressworks 2 you
  206. must run the Pressworks 2 installation again to install the OLE2
  207. handler.   
  208.  
  209. NOTE: This is only applicable to Designworks 2 and 2.02; later
  210. versions of Designworks will install their own OLE2 handler.
  211.  
  212.  
  213. UMC video drivers
  214. =================
  215.  
  216. Read this section if you are using a UMC video driver.
  217.  
  218. Pressworks 2 and PowerTable (a separate utility supplied with the
  219. Pressworks POWERpack) may encounter problems when being used with
  220. a UMC video driver. In particular, some UMC video drivers cause
  221. PowerTable to GPF (General Protection Fault) when executed.
  222.  
  223. If you encounter any problems, try the following workarounds:
  224.  
  225. - Set your Windows setup to use the standard Windows VGA display.
  226.  
  227. - Set your Windows setup to use UMC display at a different
  228.   resolution.
  229.  
  230. - Purchase the latest UMC driver.
  231.  
  232. - Purchase a different video driver.   
  233.  
  234.  
  235. Photo CD Browser and SMARTDRV 5.0
  236. =================================
  237.  
  238. Read this section if you use the Photo CD Browser with
  239. SMARTDRV 5.0.
  240.  
  241. If you have SMARTDRV 5.0 installed on your PC, you may receive
  242. "Not Ready" errors when you use the Photo CD Browser.  (SMARTDRV
  243. 5.0 is supplied with MS-DOS 6.2 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11;
  244. the Photo CD Browser is a utility supplied with Pressworks and
  245. Designworks.)
  246.  
  247. You can overcome this problem by editing the SMARTDRV command
  248. line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file; simply follow the steps below:
  249.  
  250. 1.     Start the Windows File Manager by double-clicking the File
  251.     Manager program icon in the Windows Main program group.
  252.  
  253. 2.     Select Run from the File menu. The Run dialog is displayed.
  254.  
  255. 3.     Enter SYSEDIT in the Command Line box, then click on OK to
  256.     start the System Configuration Editor.
  257.  
  258. 4.     Click in the AUTOEXEC.BAT window to make it the active
  259.     window, then look for the command line containing SMARTDRV.
  260.  
  261. 5.     Edit this command line to read: C:\DOS\SMARTDRV /X /E:2048
  262.  
  263. 6.     Select Save from the File menu to save your changes to the
  264.     AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  265.  
  266. 7.     Select Exit from the File menu to close the System
  267.     Configuration Editor, then exit Windows and restart your
  268.     computer.
  269.  
  270. When you restart your computer and reload the Photo CD Browser,
  271. you will no longer receive the "Not Ready" error message.
  272.

  279. carefully because it is not provided elsewhere in the Pressworks

  284. 1.     With Pressworks installed, double-click on the Pressworks
  285.     program icon in the relevant program group.  After a few
  286.     moments, Pressworks is displayed.

  288. 2.     Press F1 to display the Help window.

  290. 3.     Select Stop Press! from the list of Contents to display the
  291.     latest changes to Pressworks.
  292.  
  293. NOTE: If this is the first time you have used Help, we recommend
  294. that you select How to Use Help from the Help window's Help menu.

  300. We have included an number of alternative settings for certain
  301. Pressworks 2 features. Details of these settings are provided in
  302. the SETTINGS.TXT file.
