The pit viper is a very common poisonous snake in South America. It is generally brown or greenish and has marks on its back. The gray variety, also called the lichenous pit viper, is found only in the Amazon. It is responsible for the highest number of incidents involving poisonous snakes in Brazil. The poison kills the tissues of its victims. In other words, bites can result in hemorrhage and gangrene at the location of the bite.
