The howling monkey, or bugio, is one of the largest monkeys in the Amazon. This animal has a beard and its hair can be red, black or golden. It produces a strong and sharp grunt, that sounds like roaring or howling. This sound can be heard from miles away, because these monkeys have a large bone, called the hyoid, in their throat. They usually grunt to wake up the group or to alert others about rain. To communicate among themselves they perform mimes and stick out their tongues. They donΓÇÖt make steady couples and young howling monkeys are brought up by the whole group. They live in tree tops and hardly ever come down to the ground.
Approximate size: From 20 to 35 inches tall with tail between 20 and 35 inches.
