  2. BAND-IN-A-BOX SOUNBLASTER/ADLIB VERSION HELP FILE

  4. BAND.EXE is the name of the program
  5. The Standard Edition consists of the program with 24 styles
  6.         and 24 demo chord progressions named after each style.
  7. The Professional Edition has an additional 50+ styles (total 75+).

  9. All versions of Band-in-a-Box are copyrighted and may not be distributed
  10. without permission from PG Music Inc.

  17. (  BB.EXE is a different program and is the MIDI version of Band-in-a-Box
  18.   If you have a MIDI system (MPU 401 ) you should use the BB.EXE program
  19.   and not the BAND.EXE .  )

  21. This is the help file for the SoundBlaster/AdLib version of
  22. Band-in-a-Box . ( It is an ASCII file called BANDHELP.BB )
  23.  
  24. To use the program you require a SoundBlaster/AdLib or compatible
  25. card.
  26. The Band-in-a-Box program is an automatic musical accompaniment
  27. program, providing professional quality accompaniment of 3 instruments-
  28. bass,drums and piano. This means that you have a built in jazz/rock
  29. combo inside your PC , willing to play any song in any style , in any
  30. key at any tempo - willing to "back you up" for hours with no complaints !
  31.  
  32. You just type in the chords to any song , using standard chord symbols
  33. such as C or Fm7 or C13b9#11/Bb . The screen is pre-divided into beats
  34. and bars. You may enter 4 chords per bar ( 1 per note ) .
  35. You then pick a style from among 24 built in styles (jazz/pop etc. )
  36. or pick a user style from disk ( files ending in .STY ).
  37. After specifying a few things like tempo/ song title / looping points
  38. for the song you press play <F4 key>. The program automatically
  39. generates an arrangement of your chords in your style .

  41. Songs are saved to disk as .SG? files . These are tiny files less than
  42. 1 K , so you can get literally thousands of your songs onto your hard disk.

  44. There's lots you can do as the song is playing :
  45.  
  46.   - pressing F1 during playback provides a help screen listing all functions
  47.     available during playback .

  50.   - playalong melody using "intelligent playalong" feature

  56.         Using the bottom 2 rows of the keyboard - play along
  57.         with the song - don't worry - you can't hit any wrong notes !
  58.         The intelligence of the program makes sure that what you play
  59.         sounds good !

  61.         There are a few different modes of the intelligent playalong .
  62.      F2 Scale ( non intelligent )
  63.      F3 Intelligent Soloing mode ( Pop/Jazz/Country)
  64.          When playing along in intelligent Soloing mode use either the
  65.          bottom row (chord tones ) or the top row (extensions like 9th 11th)
  66.      F4 Rock scale soloing
  67.       You can change playalong modes during playback. The program
  68.       defaults to mode F3 - the intelligent soloing mode .
  69.       Some of the rock styles default to the F4 Rock scale though .

  84. You may use the Band-in-a-Box manual provided with the program.
  85. This manual was written for the MIDI version of the program. So you
  86. get to ignore all of the info concerning setting up the program to
  87. work with synthesizers/MIDI - because the BAND.EXE works automatically
  88. with the SoundBlaster and you don't need MIDI or Synthesizers for this
  89. version .
  90.   All you do is :
  91.   ( if you have a hard drive )
  92.     1. Make a new subdirectory on your hard disk called bb
  93.           C: md\bb
  94.     1. copy all files to hard drive
  95.          Copy  *.*  c:\bb
  96.     2. run the program by typing   Band  <ENTER>
  97.     3. Move around the screen with cursor keys
  98.     4. Use the pull down menus by holding down the ALT key and the
  99.        first letter of the Pull down menu .

  101.     5. Type in chords to any song
  102.           The #s on the screen on bar #s . PageUp/Down to change pages
  103.           The highlighted cell is where your chords will go. It moves
  104.           2 notes at a time . You may enter 2 chords per cell which
  105.           means that you cab enter 4 chords per bar .

  112.            To get 2 chords in
  113.           a cell - use a comma  ie  Cm7,F7
  114.  
  115.            To blank a cell use the <SPACEBAR>

  117.            To get a chord on 2nd part of cell only

  121.     6. TAB key gets you to settings at top of screen.
  122.           You can set info like title/tempo/looping points/Key from here
  123.     7. Select a style from the Pull Down menus or select a user style
  124.        from the F9 key .
  125.     8. Play your song by pressing the F4 Key
  126.     9. Playalong with the song using intelligent playalong of melody
  127.        or drums  (see above )
  128.     10.There is a number of demo chord progressions that come with
  129.        the program- one for each style. It is a good idea to load in these
  130.        songs (using F3 key ) and Play them (using F4 key) to get an idea
  131.        of what each style sounds like.
  132.        The demo songs are conveniantly titled by the style that they are
  133.        in  ie SALSA.SGU is a song in Salsa Style .
  134.        Songs have the extension .SG? where the ? is the style # of the
  135.        song with 1-9 and a-o being the 24 built in styles and
  136.        .SGU are songs saved with a user created style .
  137.  
  138.          eg.  MySong.SG1   saved as style #1 = Jazz Swing
  139.               MySong.SGA   saved as style#10 = Shuffle Rock
  140.               MySong.SGU  saved with a User Style
  141.  
  142.        User created styles are saved with extensions of .STY
  143.          ex  AFRICAN.STY is a User created style called AFRICAN
  144.  
  145.       11.Create a Standard MIDI file by <F6> key
  146.            You would do this if you have a sequencer program and want
  147.            to Edit the music produced by Band-in-a-Box . Make sure
  148.            that your sequencer is current enough to read in Standard
  149.            Midi Files which end with .MID extension .

  151.       12.Blank the worksheet by <ALT> B or pull down menu EDIT Blank
  152.       13.<F10> to quit  .

  156. The Professional Edition of the program comes with an additional
  157. 51+ styles - all 51+ may be edited (SoundBlaster users can
  158. only edit the drums- MIDI version can edit bass and piano too )
  159. The editable styles are called "User Defined Styles" and are named
  160. with extension .STY 22 of the styles are User Defined Style
  161. versions of the Built in styles - they are
  162. identified by  naming beginning with Z
  163.  
  164. ie. Z_JAZZSW.STY is User Defined Style version of the built in
  165. style Jazz Swing . Note that these Z styles are similar but
  166. not identical to the built in ones - just made with the same
  167. style in mind . The other 30+ styles on the Professional Edition
  168. are brand new styles eg. AFRICAN.STY would be African User Defined
  169. Style.

  224. SECTION 4 TUTORIAL FOR SOUNDBLASTER/ADLIB COMPATIBLES

  227. Tutorial :
  228.  
  229. 1. Start up the program by typing Band at the C:\bb prompt
  230.    ( assuming that you have loaded all the files to C:\bb subdirectory )
  231. 2. Load in a Demo Song of your choice from the Demo chord progressions
  232.    supplied with the program .
  233.       LET'S LOAD BOSSA.SG4   ...
  234.    Hit the <F3> key to get a menu of all songs available .
  235.  
  236.    Let's explore the File Selector window that pops up .
  237.  
  238.    From the menu of all songs you use cursor keys or PageUp/Down
  239.    to move around all of the songs .
  240.    Also the End key takes you quickly to the last item , which isn't
  241.    a song but is a special icon that allows you to move between
  242.    different subdirectories .Press ENTER key over this last icon and
  243.    then you can move up or down between levels of subdirectories .
  244.    Once you pick a song from a new subdirectory - you will automatically
  245.    be there when you look next time. You probably don't have any
  246.    songs in other directories at the moment so will get a No Files
  247.    message .

  249.    Anyways , find your Bossa.SG4 song , move the highlight bar over it
  250.    and press <ENTER> . The song will load in to the screen now .
  251.  
  252.    Press F4 to play the song.The song will start playing , initially
  253.    giving you a 2 bar drum count in .Then the music will start .
  254.    As its playing you can do lots of things , buts lets review the
  255.    PlayAlong basics
  256.     ( these are described in detail near the top of this file and
  257.     are also summarized by the Help screen available by the F1 key
  258.     during playback. )

  260.    Press [ or ] to change tempo by 5
  261.    Press { or } to change tempo by 20
  262.  
  263.    use the 0 to 9 keys to change the playalong instrument
  264.       eg. 2=organ 3=jazz guitar 4=Elec.Piano 5=vibes
  265.    Shift 0 to 9 - to change the chording instrument
  266.    Alt 0 to 9 to change the Bass instrument.

  268.    F9 and F10 to change  overall volume .

  270.    o and p to change volume of playalong
  271.    Shift o and p to change volume of Chording
  272.    Alt o and P to change volume of Bass
  273.    Ctrl o and p to change volume of Drums

  275.    Now , playalong !!
  276.      Using the Bottom two rows of the computer's keyboard , start
  277.      playing keys .
  278.      First use the bottom row  zxcvbnm,./ keys
  279.      Whatever note you play will be adjusted by the intelligence of
  280.      the program , so will sound good . The Bottom row is mainly
  281.      chord tones whereas the 2nd row is more interesting tones like
  282.      9ths , 11ths and 13ths of the chords .
  283.      If you want to revert to a regular scale you can do this by
  284.      pressing F2 function Key . F3 gets you back to the intelligent
  285.      mode. F4 key gets you to a rock scale , not much use in bossa
  286.      nova but useful in heavy rock,blues etc.

  288.      As you're playing , you can cahnge ocatves by the Caps Lock key
  289.      or the Shift Key  (total Playalong range 3 1/2 octaves )
  290.  
  291.      Hit the QWERTYU keys for drum sounds .
  292.  
  293.      Press ENTER Key to shut a melody note off that is playing .
  294.  
  295.      Press F1 for help during PlayBack.
  296.      Press Escape to stop Playing .
  297.  
  298.      When stopped , you can freely type in your own chords to any
  299.      song, choose different styles etc. There is a tutorial for this
  300.      in the manual.
