- A. Hardware and System Requirements
- =========================================================
-
- Requirements
- =========================================================
- To play Microsoft Golf 3.0, you need:
-
- * A 486/66 computer (Pentium 90 computer or better recommended)
- * Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or higher operating
- system (will not run on earlier versions of Windows)
- * A 2X CD-ROM drive or faster to play from a compact disc
- * 8 MB of memory (RAM) (16 MB recommended)
- * 20 MB of available hard disk space
- * A sound board plus speakers or headphones to hear audio
- * 14,400 baud modem for modem play (28,800 baud modem recommended)
- * A Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
- * 256-color Super VGA monitor
- * An ActiveX and frame-compatible Web browser such as Internet
- Explorer 3.0 for play over the Internet
-
- NOTE Golf 3.0 requires Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51
- or higher. However, the new Multiplayer capabilities of Golf 3.0
- will not run on Windows NT until DirectX 3.0 for NT is released.
- For information about playing Multiplayer Golf 3.0 on NT, see the
- section Restoring Original Multiplayer Files, later in this document.
-
- Improving Performance on Machines with 8 MB of RAM
- =========================================================
- If performance is slow on your computer with 8 MB of RAM, the
- following tips may help:
-
- * Close some of the Golf windows (for example, if both Main
- View and Green View are displayed, then close Green View).
- * Modify options in the Display Options dialog box such as:
- 1. Choose No for Draw Shadows.
- 2. Choose No for Texture Terrain.
- 3. Set the Terrain Details to all minimums.
-
- When you turn off Texture Terrain and reduce the Terrain Detail
- levels, you affect the appearance of the course -- do this only
- if speed is more important than appearance.
-
- =========================================================
- B. Installation
- =========================================================
- Golf 2.0 player files (.PIN) are not completely compatible with
- Golf 3.0. If you install Golf 3.0 into the same folder as Golf
- 2.0, back up and delete the Golf 2.0 player files (.PIN) from the
- folder first, before installation. Doing this allows Golf 3.0 to
- use the default .PIN file created during Golf 3.0 setup to resume
- any saved Golf 2.0 games.
-
- NOTE Saved Golf 2.0 shots can be replayed in Golf 3.0, but there
- is no visible golfer.
-
- If you are using a 2X CD-ROM drive, a Typical or Custom
- installation will result in better performance.
-
- If you are using 16-bit CD-ROM drivers for your CD-ROM, Autorun
- may not work properly. To manually run setup, use the Windows
- Explorer to locate the SETUP.EXE on the Golf 3.0 CD. Double-click
- SETUP.EXE to start installation.
-
- If you are running Windows NT 4.0, a desktop shortcut will not be
- created during setup.
-
- If you are using PC Tools Desktop as your Windows shell, you will
- need to restart Windows manually after installing Golf. Just exit
- Windows and type win at the prompt.
-
- Regarding audio, if you do not install the course ambient sounds
- to your hard drive during setup, you may experience problems if
- you remove the Golf CD from the CD-ROM drive during game play. To
- avoid these problems, install all the course ambient sounds to
- your hard drive during setup.
-
- Troubleshooting Microsoft Golf 3.0 Setup
- =========================================================
- Following are the most common errors encountered while
- installing Golf. Follow the instructions for each error message
- you encountered when you tried to install Golf, and then run
- Setup again.
-
- **An Intel 486 or higher processor**
-
- You must either upgrade to an Intel 486 or higher processor or
- switch to a computer with an Intel 486 or higher processor.
-
- **Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or later**
-
- You must install Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or later.
- To purchase a Windows upgrade, see your local retailer.
-
- **A 256-color video driver (minimum 640 x 480 display resolution)**
-
- Microsoft Golf high-resolution golf courses require a 256-color
- video display. In most cases you need only install a 256-color
- video driver to get this display. For more on display issues,
- see Video Troubleshooting, below.
-
- =========================================================
- C. Video Troubleshooting
- =========================================================
-
- Microsoft Golf high-resolution golf courses require a 256-color
- video display, which requires a 256-color video driver.
-
- NOTE: If you don't have the necessary 256-color driver, or if you
- aren't sure that your video card supports 256 colors, contact your
- video-card manufacturer.
-
- To obtain Super VGA drivers:
- Download the SVGA drivers from the Microsoft Download Service
- (MSDL). These drivers work correctly on many video cards. The
- phone number for MSDL is (206) 936-6735. This service is
- available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The highest download
- speed available is 14,400 bits per second (bps). Each file
- is a compressed, self-extracting file. To obtain the file,
- download the file name SVGA.EXE. After you download the file,
- run it in an empty directory to extract the files it contains.
-
- Golf 3.0 looks best when Display is set to 16 bit or High Color.
-
- Displaying 256 Colors
- =========================================================
- Your computer must display at least 256 colors to run Golf 3.0.
-
- To display 256 colors in Windows 95:
- 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
- Control Panel.
- 2. Double-click the Display icon.
- 3. Click the Settings tab.
- 4. Under Color Palette, click 256 Color, 16 bit, or High Color.
- 5. Click OK.
- 6. Restart Golf.
-
- Resolving Other Video Driver Conflicts
- =========================================================
- If you install different video drivers after installing Golf 3.0,
- these may change the performance of the game.
-
- If you experience distorted colors, ghosting, or other irregular
- video problems, you should consult the DISPLAY.TXT or README.TXT
- packaged with Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51/4.0 for hardware-
- specific display problems. Most video problems can be resolved by
- updating the operating system's display drivers. Consult your OEM
- (Original Equipment Manufacturer) for a possible display-driver
- upgrade.
-
- Some systems may have display problems when used with incorrect or
- generic Windows video drivers. Be sure you have installed the
- correct video driver for your video card.
-
- To determine which driver is being used in Windows NT 3.51,
- double-click Windows Setup in the Main group. In Windows 95 or
- Windows NT 4.0:
- 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
- Control Panel.
- 2. Double-click the Display icon.
- 3. Click the Settings tab.
- 4. Click Display Type, or for Windows 95 click the Change
- Display Type button, and note the Adapter Type displayed.
-
- Contact your video-card manufacturer for verification of the
- latest video driver and for information about obtaining the
- latest driver.
-
- =========================================================
- D. Audio Troubleshooting
- =========================================================
- If Golf 3.0 does not play sound properly, first verify that:
- * You've correctly installed the Windows 95 or Windows NT sound
- drivers.
- * Your speakers are on and turned up.
- * The Windows 95 volume control is enabled and turned up and
- the Mute check box isn't selected.
-
- If the game still doesn't play sound properly, verify that
- Windows 95 can play .WAV files:
- 1. Quit Golf, in addition to any other programs that use
- sound.
- 2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
- Control Panel.
- 3. Double-click the Sounds icon.
- 4. Under Events, click an event that has a loudspeaker icon
- next to it.
- 5. In the Name text box, be sure that the three-letter file
- extension is ".WAV".
- 6. Under Preview, click the play button. You should hear a
- sound.
-
- If you don't hear any sound, or if Windows 95 is not able to play
- a .WAV file, check to see that a sound driver is enabled:
- 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
- Control Panel.
- 2. Double-click the System icon.
- 3. Click the Device Manager tab.
- 4. Click the plus sign next to Sound, Video and Game
- Controllers. If you don't see this entry or you have no
- sound card listed under this entry, contact the
- manufacturer of the computer or sound card and request
- help for reinstalling the sound-card drivers.
-
- Some 8-bit sound cards may have difficulty playing the advanced
- sound effects in Golf. You might eliminate periodic or random
- freezes by turning off the game's Backgrounds, Commentary, or All
- Other Sounds options. To turn off these options:
- 1. If you're not playing a game, go to the Welcome Screen
- and click the More button. If you're in the middle of a
- game, select the Options menu.
- 2. Choose Preferences.
- 3. Choose Sounds.
-
- NOTE If you do not install the course ambient sounds to your
- hard drive during setup, you may experience problems if you remove
- the Golf CD from the CD-ROM drive during game play. To avoid these
- problems, install all the course ambient sounds to your hard drive
- during setup.
-
- =========================================================
- E. Game Play Issues
- =========================================================
-
- We recommend that you do not change screen resolutions during
- game play.
-
- If for some reason you're having trouble moving the Swing Control
- or if it disappears, click the Views menu, then click Layout.
- Select a layout and click the Use button. If this doesn't work,
- save your game and restart Golf. Then select a new layout again.
-
- Some of the advanced features of the Microsoft Intellipoint 2.0
- Mouse software may interfere with the Swing Control in Golf 3.0.
- The ClickSaver, Snap To, Focus, Smart Speed, and Clicklock
- features should be turned off before playing Golf 3.0.
-
- When you pause a recorded player from the Shot Countdown dialog
- box, the dialog box disappears, and the word "Continue" appears
- on the Swing Control. To unpause the player, click the Swing
- Control.
-
- If you run Golf 2.0 and Golf 3.0 simultaneously from the same
- machine, neither version runs correctly.
-
- Recorded players from previous versions of Golf do not work with
- Golf 3.0.
-
- If any course disappears from your course selection list, verify
- that the Golf 3.0 CD is in the CD-ROM disk drive and, if necessary,
- run setup again and select the reinstall option.
-
- If online Help does not appear when you press F1, it may be a
- combination of two problems:
- * You didn't install Help to your hard drive when you originally
- installed Golf.
- * You later downloaded the Multiplayer Patch
-
- To fix this:
- 1. Back up the GOLF.M14 file.
- 2. Double-click SETUP.EXE on the Golf 3.0 CD.
- 3. Choose Custom installation, then choose to install Help to
- your hard drive.
- 4. Restore the backed up version of GOLF.M14 (this requires you
- to overwrite the file).
-
- =========================================================
- F. Multiplayer
- =========================================================
-
- Multiplayer Troubleshooting
- =========================================================
- To use the Internet Gaming Zone's Web-based matchmaking services
- for Multiplayer Golf games over the Internet, you must have an
- ActiveX and frame-compatible Web browser such as Internet Explorer
- 3.0.
-
- NOTE If you prefer to use the original Multiplayer version that
- shipped with Golf 3.0, see the section below, Restoring Original
- Multiplayer Files.
-
- If you have problems with modem games, reconfigure your modem as a
- standard 28,800 baud or 14,400 baud modem instead of any modem-
- specific configuration you may be using.
-
- We recommend that all players in a Multiplayer Game have different
- names.
-
- If you choose Cancel at the Start Game screen following an
- Internet Gaming Zone matchmaking process, you will be returned to
- the Connection Type screen. However, your web browser will remain
- connected to the Internet Gaming Zone until you manually shut it
- down.
-
- If you have Microsoft Internet Explorer installed, and the
- Internet AutoDialer is operating, it may interfere with
- Multiplayer LAN TCP/IP connections. To turn off the AutoDialer,
- click the Windows 95 Start button, point to Settings, and click
- Control Panel. Double-click the Internet icon. On the Connections
- tab of the Internet Properties dialog box, turn off automatic
- dialing.
-
- You cannot play a modem-to-modem game between the original Golf
- 3.0 and Golf 3.0 with the multiplayer patch installed.
-
- Avoid using the same names for golfers in a multiplayer game. If
- multiple golfers have the same name, the computers may not display
- the correct golfers.
-
- In an Internet game, it's not unusual for a blank white screen to
- appear after the Host clicks Play Game. This is a normal part of
- the Golf loading process.
-
- During an Internet game, keeping the Web browser open may cause
- palette problems in Golf. It's best to close the browser while
- you play.
-
- After installing the Multiplayer Patch, do not add or remove Help
- components from the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet in the Control
- Panel. Changing the installation settings for the Help files will
- cause the new multiplayer Help files to be deleted. If you do delete
- the new Multiplayer Help files, you need to re-install the Multiplayer
- Patch to restore the Multiplayer Help files.
-
- Restoring the Original Multiplayer Files
- =========================================================
- Microsoft Golf 3.0 includes improved Multiplayer capabilities that
- support Internet game play, in addition to game play over a Local
- Area Network (LAN) or modem-to-modem. However, Internet game play
- uses DirectX 3.0, which is not yet available for Windows NT.
- To play Multiplayer Golf 3.0 on NT, you need to restore the
- Multiplayer version that originally shipped with Microsoft Golf
- 3.0. To do this:
-
- 1. Delete the GAMEHELP.DLL file from the Golf 3.0 directory.
- 2. Insert the Golf 3.0 CD into your CD-ROM reader.
- 3. Use Windows Explorer to explore the Golf CD.
- 4. Locate and then double-click the SETUP.EXE on the
- Golf CD. This will launch Golf 3.0 Setup.
- 5. Click Reinstall.
