  1. ADDENDUM regarding bug fix version 1.5.1

  3. About StuffIt 1.5.1 (8-29-88)
  4.  
  5. This document describes the status of release 1.5.1.  It does not supplement
  6. or replace the StuffIt User's Guide.
  7.

  9. StuffIt 1.5.1 is a bug fix release.  It corrects several problems in 1.5.
  10. Almost all of these problems were caused by my hasty conversion from
  11. LightspeedC 2.15 to 3.0.  In the conversion, I expected that everything will
  12. be identical.  (A legitimate assumption.)  Unfortunately, that assumption
  13. was false.  As a result, quite a few, both innocuous and serious, bugs
  14. crept into 1.5.  All known problems as of today (and I think we caught most
  15. of them) have been corrected in 1.5.1.  Releasing a bug fix version is
  16. unusual for me.  Usually, I wait it out until the next full release.  However,
  17. that may be quite some ways down the road, especially with school starting for
  18. me.  By no means do I intend to stop, or even suspend, development on StuffIt.
  19. I think that in the past year, I've shown my dedication through numerous
  20. enhancements.  And I intend to continue with enhancements.  It's just that the
  21. next version may take some time to complete.

  24. The bugs corrected are:
  25. 1. Operation of TEXT add has been restored.
  26. 2. A disk error during compression (usu. disk full) no longer crashes machine.
  27. 3. On larger HDs, free space may be reported as negative.  Fixed
  28. 4. Aborting a HMF add and keeping the partially added HMF sometimes results in
  29.    a corrupted entry.  Fixed.

  31. Though it isn't a major improvement, performance under MultiFinder has been
  32. improved to the extent that running StuffIt in the background is now
  33. tolerable -- not great, but tolerable.

  36. To repeat myself...
  37. In the near future, there will be bug fix releases for some of the other
  38. programs.  The next major release is not expected for quite some time.
  39. In the next few months, I expect to be devoting a substantial amount of time
  40. to school and to some other projects.

  43. My appologies for any inconvenience, added cost of downloading, etc.  I thank
  44. all users for their previous support and I hope it continues.  We've come a
  45. long way since a year ago.  And we still have quite some ways to go.  Your
  46. suggestions, your criticisms, your encouragement and your understanding are
  47. all greatly appreciated.
