  1. FileMaker Pro Installation Instructions

  3. Follow these steps to install FileMaker Pro and associated software on your hard drive.

  5. Installation FileMaker Pro:

  7. 1.   Start Microsoft Windows and make sure the Program Manager window is open.
  8.  
  9. 2.   Click the drive identifier for the CD-ROM drive, double-click FileMaker Pro in the list of directories, and then double-click install.exe in the directory 'Install'.

  11. The installation program starts and a dialog box appears to let you choose a location (path) for the FMPRO directory, which stores the FileMaker Pro program files.

  13. 3.   Click OK to accept the default path for the Claris directory, or enter a new path and click OK.

  15. The Installation Options dialog box appears.
  16.  
  17. 4.   Click OK to accept the default path, or type a new path and click OK.

  19. A dialog box appears to let you choose a path for the Claris directory. The Claris directory stores files that are common to all Claris applications, such as the spelling dictionaries and translators.

  21. 5.   Choose either Full Installation or Partial Installation and click OK.

If you need to save space, you can install just the FileMaker Pro application-or the application and one or more of the other modules: the Help System, the Templates and Tutorial Files (necessary for doing the tutorial in Getting Started), and the Graphics Filters (necessary for importing pictures). You can install any of these separately at a later time without re-installing the application.

  25. If you choose to install the Templates and Tutorial Files, subdirectories are created for them below the FMPRO directory.

  27. 6.   Personalize your copy of FileMaker Pro and click OK.

  29. Type your name, your company name and the serial number shown on your registration card.

  31. 7.   Choose one of the network options-Farallon PhoneNET Talk or Novell NetWare-or choose "No network support" if you won't be sharing FileMaker Pro files over a network. Then click OK.

  33. If you are not sure which network to choose, ask your network administrator.

  35. 8.   If you didn't choose Farallon PhoneNet Talk or you are using Windows 3.1, skip this step. If you choose Farallon PhoneNET Talk or you are using Windows 3.0, click OK in the Modify Autoexec.bat dialog box to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that FileMaker Pro works correctly with the network and Windows.

  37. You can also choose to make a backup of your current AUTOEXEC.BAT file (AUTOEXEC.FMP), or you an choose not to make any modifications at all. If you choose not to modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you must make the following modifications to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file yourself.

  39. {SYMBOL 183 \f "Symbol" \s 12 \h}    For Windows 3.0 users, add the name of the FMPRO directory to the path statement.

  41. {SYMBOL 183 \f "Symbol" \s 12 \h}    For PhoneNET Talk, add the command to execute the FMPNTALK networking application (FMPNTALK.EXE).

  43. After the installation program copies all the files, it creates a program group for FileMaker Pro, which appears in the Program Manager. Then a message confirms that installation was successful.

  45. 9.   Click OK to return to the Program Manager.

  47. If you chose Farallon PhoneNET TALK or you are using Windows 3.0, you need to restart your computer so that changes in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file take effect.
