  2. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MICROSOFT ARCADE
  3. *************************************************
  4. Welcome to Microsoft Arcade!
  5.  
  6. Here's some information to help you install Arcade on your 
  7. computer, as well as tips on troubleshooting any sound or
  8. video display questions you might have.
  9.

  11. BEFORE SETUP: Disk Size and Hard Drive Space
  12. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  13. Arcade is shipped on a diskette for a 3.5" 1.44 megabyte drive.
  14. If you need the program on another size disk, fill out the 
  15. fulfillment card included in this package, and the proper size 
  16. disk will be shipped to you.
  17.  
  18. Arcade must be installed on your computer's hard drive (usually 
  19. labeled as the C drive) And there must be at least 3 megabytes of
  20. free space on the hard drive.

  23. SETUP: How to Install Arcade on Your Computer
  24. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  25. Installation is easy. Here's a step-by-step guide:
  26.  
  27. 1. Start Windows as you normally do, and stay within Program
  28.    Manager.
  29. 2. Insert Disk 1 - Setup into drive A (or drive B), 
  30.    whichever is your 3.5" drive.
  31. 3. Choose Run from the File menu of Program Manager. 
  32. 4. In the Command Line box, type A:SETUP and press the ENTER key.
  33.    (If using your B drive, type B:SETUP and press the ENTER key).
  34. 5. From this point on, Arcade's Setup program guides the way
  35.    and keeps you posted on the progress of the installation.
  36.  
  37. Sit back and relax! It can take a while for all the computer code 
  38. behind these awesome games to be decompressed and transferred
  39. to your computer's hard drive.

  42. BEGINNING TO PLAY: Just Point and Click!

  44. Open the Arcade group in the Program Manager and double-click
  45. on the icon of the game you wish to play.

  48. LEARNING TO PLAY: Quick Help and Full Help
  49. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  50. As soon as you open a game for the first time an abbreviated 
  51. Quick Help is displayed to provide basic instructions on how
  52. to play the game.

  54. For a more complete guide to the games, including strategies and
  55. hints and detailed scoring information, choose Contents or any
  56. of the other topics from the Help menu. You can also press F1 
  57. for Help.

  60. CUSTOMIZING THE GAMES: Create Your Personal Versions
  61. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  62. The Options menu for each game offers a Player Controls command
  63. that allows you to choose the keyboard and mouse controls you
  64. use to play the game. The Customize Game command lets you customize
  65. the playing speed and other game variables to create your own 
  66. personalized versions of the games.

  69. SOUND: Troubleshooting Tips
  70. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  71. Arcade captures the original sounds of these classic games, which
  72. nicely enhances the playing experience. To take advantage of these
  73. capabilities you must have a sound card and Windows 3.1. If you
  74. encounter problems playing the sounds, check that your sound card
  75. drivers are installed properly and contact your sound card manufacturer.

  77. If you do not have a sound card, and are using PC Speaker Driver, 
  78. turn the sound off so it does not interfere with game play. 
  79. To turn off sound, choose Sound from the Options menu. A check mark 
  80. beside Sound means it is turned on.

  82. NOTE TO SOUNDBLASTER OWNERS: if you run any of Arcade's 
  83. games with sound on for more than two hours straight (which makes
  84. you an awesome player!), you may encounter system slowdowns
  85. and difficulties If you do experience this problem, just exit Windows 
  86. and turn off your computer. Then restart your computer and restart 
  87. Windows to return to normal computer usage. If you wish to play for 
  88. more than two hours straight, turn off the sound by choosing Sound
  89. from the Options menu.

  92. VIDEO DISPLAY CARDS AND DRIVERS: Troubleshooting Tips
  93. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  94. Arcade games can be played using either VGA of SVGA video mode.
  95.  
  96. When using high resolution video drivers from various video card
  97. manufacturers, Arcade may encounter video display problems. If 
  98. this happens, make sure the video drivers you are using are
  99. compatible with Microsoft Windows version 3.1. If necessary, 
  100. contact your video card manufacturer to obtain updated drivers.
  101.  
  102. An alternative to obtaining a new or updated display driver is 
  103. to change your video mode to the standard Windows VGA video mode. 
  104. This video driver has been tested thoroughly, and Microsoft 
  105. Arcade works on virtually all video cards when using this driver. 
  106. For instructions on installing the standard Windows VGA video 
  107. mode, please see Help within Windows Setup in the Main program 
  108. group of the Windows Program Manager.

  110. NOTE TO ATI ULTRA VIDEO CARD OWNERS: You may encounter 
  111. problems in Arcade if you are not using the most current video driver. 
  112. The most current driver available for the ATI Ultra video card 
  113. at this time can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download 
  114. service or by contacting ATI.

  117. OBTAINING UPDATED DRIVERS: Call or Download 
  118. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  119. If you need an updated driver for your video card to assure your 
  120. card is compatible with Windows 3.1, contact the manufacturer of 
  121. your video card for their updated Windows display driver. The 
  122. manufacturer's phone number should be in the manuals that 
  123. came with your video card or personal computer. Another option 
  124. for obtaining updated drivers is the Microsoft Download service, 
  125. an electronic bulletin board that can be accessed via a modem at
  126. (206) 936-MSDL (6735).

  128. Drivers provided on the MSDL are compressed with the PKWare 
  129. utilities, and are in the form of executable files (.EXE 
  130. extension). It is best to download the file or files you need 
  131. into an empty directory on your hard disk, or a blank formatted 
  132. floppy.

  134. To decompress these drivers after downloading them, either:
  135.  
  136. From Windows File Manager: double click on the filename (which 
  137. will end in .EXE) that you downloaded. 
  138.  
  139. OR
  140.  
  141. From the DOS prompt:  change to the directory containing the
  142. downloaded file, type the filename, and press ENTER.

  145. GAME PERFORMANCE: How to Get the Best Display Rate
  146. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  147. To create the realistic graphics from the original games requires 
  148. a lot from your computer. If you would like to maximize the screen 
  149. speed of the game action, you can do the following:
  150.  
  151. --Run the games within the standard window size (rather than using
  152.   the Full Screen command from the Options menu).
  153. --When playing Battlezone choose Customize Game from the Options
  154.   menu, or press F9, and choose NO for Display Background. This 
  155.   reduces the amount of drawing the computer must do for each frame,
  156.   without interfering with game play.
  157. --When playing Tempest, if you have a high performance personal
  158.   computer (such as a 486/66), and would like to see the traditional 
  159.   starfield during the hyperspace transition between levels, choose 
  160.   Customize Game from the Options menu, or press F9, and choose ON 
  161.   for Display Hyperspace Starfield.
