  66. Welcome to the demonstration version of IBM PSnS/2
  67. 32-bit, multithreaded backup as a background task for
  68. OS/2* v2.x.
  69.  
  70. This full featured backup system will process your backups
  71. throughout the time you are running your machine(s) while
  72. you busy yourself with the tasks you need to do, leaving
  73. PSnS/2 to take the sting out of the daily backup routine.
  74.  
  75. The zipped demo package of PSnS/2, PSNS2DEM.ZIP contains 3 files:
  76.

  78. *  the PSS2DISK.EXE file
  79.  
  80. To be able to use the install program provided you MUST extract the file
  81. PSS2DISK.EXE to a 1.44MB diskette, NOT one of 720K capacity.

  83. Load a newly formatted diskette in drive A: and unzip the file by opening
  84. a command prompt under OS/2 and entering:
  85.  
  86. [drive] [path]: PSS2DISK.EXE -D *.* A:
  87.  
  88. For example:
  89.  
  90. C:\CSERVE\DOWNLOAD\PSS2DISK.EXE -D *.* A:
  91.  
  92. The file PSS2DISK.EXE will then be extracted to the diskette in drive A: and
  93. the files installed in the appropriate directories for PSnS/2's installation program
  94. to be able to locate them.

  96. NOTE: you MUST use the switch "-D"  AND "*.*" on extracting the file for
  97. the correct configuration of the diskette to be made. Should you omit this
  98. switch or the *.* instruction accidentally, erase all files from the diskette and
  99. start again, inserting the necessary switch "-D" AND "*.*" for PSS2DISK.EXE to
  100. function correctly.

  102. For installation to function correctly, you MUST install from your
  103. A: drive only, using the character based INSTALL.EXE program provided.
  104. This limitation applies to the demonstration version of PSnS/2 only.
  105. The full product of PSnS/2 has a Presentation Manager* graphical
  106. install procedure not provided with this demo package.

  114. forthcoming IBM PSnS/2 v.2.1.0 It is NOT a full working version of the program.

  116. Backup of critical data MUST NOT BE ATTEMPTED as the RESTORE function has been
  117. disabled and any such data backed up by PSnS/2 2.10D demo version would NOT be
  118. recoverable using PSnS/2 2.10D. Backup Restore functionality is ONLY provided in the
  119. forthcoming release of the full IBM PSnS/2 2.1.0 for OS/2 product.

  149. INSTALLING PSnS/2 V2.10D DEMO:

  152. If you are unsure whether PSnS/2 will run on your system, consult the
  153. MANUAL.INF documentation file provided, where you will find relevant information
  154. under Appendix A: "Outline of Hardware and Software Requirements".
  155. You can use the OS/2 VIEW facility to access this file.
  156.  
  157. The Installation details in this .INF file relate to the current beta version of the
  158. graphical installation program provided with the full product, NOT this demo version.
  159.  
  160. To get PSnS/2 2.10D demo running on your computer you must install
  161. from the diskette you have just created running it ONLY from the A: drive
  162. of your computer.
  163.  
  164. There are three steps to installing PSnS/2:
  165.  
  166. *  Setting options and copying from diskette
  167. *  Modifying some OS/2 system files
  168. *  Configuring your Backup Rulebooks which tell PSnS/2 what to back up.
  169.  
  170. RUNNING THE INSTALLATION PROGRAM:
  171.  
  172. Initiate an OS/2 session or open up a command prompt by double clicking
  173. and enter on the command line:
  174.  
  175. A:INSTALL
  176.

  179. A:INSTALL GENERAL
  180.  
  181. Note:
  182.  
  183. "GENERAL" is the name of the default rulebook. It has been preconfigured
  184. to run a backup of the OS/2 OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI files, as well as
  185. backing up the OS/2 Workplace Shell, assuming the C: drive to be the one
  186. on which OS/2 v2.0 has been installed. See "Editing Rulebooks" in the file
  187. MANUAL.INF for details on how to adjust GENERAL to suit your particular
  188. circumstances.

  190. PSnS/2 is now ready to start installation and the first installation panel
  191. is displayed.
  192.  
  193. Follow the instructions on all the installation panels. You will be asked
  194. various questions about how you want to install PSnS/2. Answer each
  195. question and press Enter. For Yes/No questions, type Y or N only. There is
  196. almost always a default answer which you can accept by presing Enter.
  197.  
  198. It is recommended that you accept all the default answers. In particular
  199. you should accept the default answer [Y] for the question "Do you wish
  200. to install sample rulebooks?" Otherwise the default rulebook GENERAL will
  201. not be installed.

  203. There are notes at the bottom of each installation panel to help you answer
  204. the questions as they occur.

  210. Two versions of the main program PSS.EXE are provided on the diskette:

  214. This is the 16-bit version for users of OS/2 v1.2 and 1.3

  218. This is the 32-bit version for OS/2 v2.x
  219.  
  220. Having completed all the installation stages, PSnS/2 2.10D Demo Version will have been
  221. copied from your diskette and installed sccessfully on the drive of your choice.
  222. You will now need to refer to the documentation provided in order to complete the
  223. configuration necessary to run PSnS/2 on your machine.

  229. Use OS/2's VIEW facility to access the full documentation provided in MANUAL.INF.
  230. which will detail the remaining configuration stages once the program files have
  231. correctly been installed on your computer's hard drive and it will provide comprehensive
  232. information to enable you further to explore the features of PSnS/2's 32-bit, multi-threaded
  233. background backup services for OS/2.

  235. RUNNING DOS AND WIN-OS2 WITH PSnS/2:
  236.  
  237. Under certain circumstances, the demo version 2.10D of PSnS/2 may encounter difficulties
  238. running in the background when DOS and WIN-OS2 VDMs are being run under OS/2 2.x..
  239. Should you encounter this, for example, by noticing that PSnS/2 2.10D demo appears to have
  240. stalled when checking your drive for changed files [the status bar will show "Checking X:"
  241. continually], select "Priorities" from the "Setup" menu and alter ALL THREE thread priority
  242. settings to "HIGH". Then close down PSnS/2 completely before restarting the program.
  243. PSnS/2 should then run unhindered while the relevant VDMs are in use.
  244.  
  245. NOTE:
  246. =====

  248. ONLY alter these thread priority settings in cases where you are encountering clearly discernible
  249. problems with VDMs under OS/2 v2.x.. Should you need to alter the settings, ALWAYS close
  250. down PSnS/2 first and restart the program before continuing work with your computer.
