  33. Blackbeard History
  34.  
  35. Blackbeard was first released in 1985.  It was distributed using
  36. the shareware principle.  We doubted that anyone would register
  37. the program. Less than three months later, we received our
  38. first registration from Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Since
  39. then, we continue to receive many orders per week, and respond as
  40. quickly as we can.  We have ported Blackbeard through four C
  41. compilers and two mailing addresses.  The shareware principle has
  42. proven productive to us and our users.

  44. In 1988, several siginificant events have occurred.
  45.  
  46. First, OS/2 and Microsoft's 5.1 C compiler (OS/2) became
  47. available.  OS/2 is a good development environment for both OS/2
  48. and MS-DOS software.  We have ported Blackbeard to OS/2 and are
  49. currently enhancing the program to take advantage of OS/2
  50. specific capabilities.

  52. Second, the Blackbeard code outgrew its two bedroom
  53. apartment (that is the medium model), so we moved the code into a
  54. ranch (that is the large model). This meant that we are now able
  55. to dynamically expand into memory areas we previously had not
  56. touched.  For example, we can now increase the number of lines
  57. allocated to edit a file as needed (no more =24000 parameters
  58. are required).

  60. Third, software viruses became a widespread concern. So much so
  61. that some companies set policy to prohibit downloading of
  62. software from bulletin boards. This is not a good development for
  63. shareware products, so we investigated additional methods of
  64. distribution, e.g., retail availability.

  66. Because of these developments, we have diverged the Blackbeard
  67. product into three products called: Blackbeard, Captain
  68. Blackbeard, and Blackbeard/2.  We have also provided unique
  69. mailing addresses for each product. This ensures that the right
  70. person reads your comments.

  72. Blackbeard is the current shareware version.  We will fix bugs
  73. and perform very minimal enhancements.  Its primary advantage is
  74. that it can terminate and stay resident (TSR).  TSR will not be
  75. available on the other two products.  The mailing address remains

  82. Captain Blackbeard is the enhanced version of Blackbeard.  It
  83. contains all the features of the original Blackbeard (except for
  84. TSR) and will continue to be upgraded.  The two most significant
  85. upgrades it currently has are the dynamically allocated editing
  86. limits, and the compile/review windows.  The compile/review
  87. windows allow you to execute your compiler, saving the errors in
  88. a review file, and position the cursor in the code file for each
  89. error in the review file.  It provides a fairly integrated
  90. development environment, similarly to the Turbo C integrated
  91. environment.  This product is freely distributed and available
  92. through retail outlets.  Retail distribution was provided for
  93. those concerned about viruses.  The mailing address for Captain

  100. Blackbeard/2 is the OS/2 version. It provides the features of
  101. the original Blackbeard with the exception of TSR and the DOS
  102. window functions. It also includes the Captain Blackbeard
